Iridium Spark Plug Upgrade for FZ6 + Tips for Installation

In this video I will be going over my switch from the standard copper/nickel OEM CR9EK spark plug to the more technologically advanced iridium CR9EIX spark plug. I have heard good things about these spark plugs and since this bike was new back in 2008 ~ish people have been installing this plug to improve spark plug longevity with an iridium electrode which is a harder material and therefore can withstand more arcs without degradation.
I initially thought my spark plugs had begun to misfire after about 8000 km's but it turns out there was more behind the misfire than bad spark plugs. After riding the bike on the new iridium plugs I can say the bike felt smooth and normal at idle just like the CR9EK (original) plugs. I still have a misfire to chase down though so more videos coming on that soon.
The plug I upgraded to is a NGK CR9EIX - I left the spark plug gapped to what it comes with out of the box (0.031"). Recommended gap for the CR9EK (stock) plugs is 0.024-0.028" but since this is an entirely new plug I thought I would try it out with the standard gap.

My 07 FZ6N S2 had the same idling issue. Misfires when pulling away from a stop until about 3-4k rpm, above it ran and revs fine. I also switched tot iridium plugs and they didn't fix it (came back after some kilometers). I used your videos to diagnose the ignition with a multimeter, all good. Then i decided to replace all 4 sparkplug caps. When pulling them out a few had some small cracks in the plastic under the rubber end. While at it i gapped down the iridium plugs to spec. This last maintenance fixed the issue and since I've driven about 2500km without any issue! Thanks for the nice and informative videos, keep it up.

That’s some great insight into the misfire for me! I didn’t take a super close look at my caps for cracks but nothing obvious, maybe I’ll take closer look. Thanks for the ideas!

Hey I had this exact same issue with my fz6. idle issues at low rev, no issue in high rev. I Changed the plugs multiple times with multiple types and still never fixed it. In the end I replace the two ignition coils and the problem was fixed perfectly. I found a pair of OEM Denso coils on Ebay since a brand new pair is expensive.

@@choppaprod there's only two I'm sure. 1 to a pair of plugs. I replaced them both but i reckon only one needed it. They're positioned under the battery.

I ran the factory plugs untouched to 32,000 miles on my 2007 FZ6 and I switched to the iridium's in my 2009 at around 15,000 miles as I wanted to keep in longer than the 07. I now have over 52,000 miles on the bike and it's still running fine.

You can also use a ratchet ring spanner in conjunction with the factory plug remover to install and remove the plugs. I have 2007 naked FZ6 and the plugs NGK/CR9EK were still good after the recommended 40,000 k Replacement gapped at 0.63 mm or 0.25 inches .

@@acesmokaI read in the FZ6 Faser service manual that 95 Research Octane Number (RON) is the required fuel to use. And 95 RON is roughly equivalent to 91-octane on the anti-knock index currently used in the United States, according to Google.

They are $21.00 on Ebay. search the plug number instead of "plugs for the FZ6". Check the gap on each one how ever. In my set of 4 each one was different. anything from about .020 to .036. I gapped them (without touching the iridium wire) to a uniform .026.. My old plugs had 57K Miles on them and the gap was up to .040. It even wore the electrode into an oval pattern. I didn't have any misfire issue however (I redline it maybe 1% of the time, because who can see that tach on the 04 version. . . so I think I just got away with it). . .. But I just saw your reliability video and I bet the idle speed was the root cause of your misfire issue. Low voltage can cause all kinds of intermittent phantom issues that will lead you on a wild goose chase. Thanks for documenting your journey so we all can learn.

Iridium plugs lasts longer thats about it, it makes sense in cars since cars have a better charging system, motorcycles on the other hand if they're designed by the manufacturer to run on copper plugs then i would stick to it, copper are a better conductor, but it won't last as long, but most motorcycles put fraction of the miles that cars do, its a matter of choice but there's a reason manufacturers instate what plugs to use in your specific bike or car.

I bought a 2008 fz6-n two months ago for an absolute steal. However I live in Sweden, and have to wait until spring to ride... I have binge watched your maintanence videos and get more and more impatient to get riding! One mod that I have checked out and plan to do is the MT07 clutch push lever swap. It will supposedly increase the "clutch slip zone" and make the clutch lighter to operate. Have you considered this mod? It would be nice to hear your take :) Cheers and thanks for the great videos!

My bike has the beginnings of that same misfire. It only just had new plugs. At twenty years old I'm guessing coils same as yours was. I'll be fitting R6 stick coils, wired in series. Fingers crossed!

It turned out to be the TPS. Yamaha did a voluntary recall for 2004-06 fz6 models as they had received a faulty batch from their suppliers, it hadn't been done on my bike so they did it free if charge, even though the bike is 20 years old now. Maybe somebody else who's having the same problem sees this and calls their dealer to check 😊

Did you ever figure out that miss fire? I believe i have the same thing on my 04 with only 5k miles. Bumpy idle and also very bumpy throttle at low speeds. I had the tps replaced via a recall and the problem got somewhat better for a few rides. Then returned. I was thinking about doing spark plugs next. Maybe possibly looking into a throttle body synch..

Ya, the problem ended up being the ignition coils. Even though they measured fine with the multimeter they were the source of my problem. I installed a used pair I bought off eBay.

After this video I gapped them down to 0.028” and the misfire improved but only slightly. I’m thinking I might gap theme down even further and see if that helps. Pretty stuck on this misfire though.
