This Spring I placed an order for some Bearded Iris from Schreiner's Iris Garden. I love the quality of Iris that I purchase from Schreiners. This is my second order from them over the last few years. Join me while I unbox my new Iris and share with you the varieities I purchased, as well as my experiences with growing Iris. I share with you the varities of Iris I currently have growing in my garden, as well as how to plant them, what to use to fertilize your Iris, and what to do with the foliage and bloom stalks one they are done blooming. Now is also the perfect time to begin dividing your Iris. Choose to do this task in the evening when its cooler, or on an overcast day. Do you grow Iris in your garden? Comment below.

Yes you can!! Choose to do it in the evening when its cooler, or on an overcast day. But this is a great time to start thinking about dividing them so that they will have time to re establish and grow new roots before they go dormant for winter.

When I moved in, my home came with both tall and dwarf iris.....deep purple. The tall iris became a nuisance because they always flopped over. I gave those away and kept the dwarf iris. So far, so good, but those definitely need divided now. I think my relationship with the tall iris was damaged because of that initial experience. I do love my dwarf iris though! Deer proof and that's priority #1 here. Thanks for your great videos! It seems if you love gardening, you also have to love learning...because the learning never ends. Thank you for helping with that!

Love Schreiners! I have 2 gardens at home in San Francisco, and one has a lot of sunny areas that is perfect for beardeds. My "Concertina" just finished blooming...shortie that needs to be oushed to the forefront. One if ny favorites is a light, silvery blue called "Silverado"; it combines well with all colors and just grows and grows. So, I just ordered 9 or 10 new ones from Scheiners...trying to get more rebloomers. Love all the colors...but partial to deep blues and purples ("Superstition" wicked dark) as they act as neutrals with other colors in the garden. So, I have: Victoria Falls Jurassic Park Harvest of Memories His Royal Highness Best Bet Florentine Silk (gorgeous) Silverado Concertina I just ordered Ring Tone You Grow Girl Titan's Glory Sharp Dressed Man Devil's Punchbowl Haunted Heart Spendthrift Ragtop Day

Steph, I love growing irises in my garden, and I have quite a few different kinds. Among the different varieties, are miniatures (really short ones, I don't know the name of), Siberian Irises (three cultivars), variegated leaf irises, and reblooming irises. One of the tall, bearded irises that I love is named, 'Lemonade on Ice', it is yellow and white. Last fall I collected seeds from a gorgeous blue Siberian Iris from my garden and tried to winter sow them. I decided that since I didn't see anything sprouting in that water jug to plant other seeds in the same soil. Well, guess what, apparently it takes a long time for iris seeds to germinate because I had tiny little irises growing in that water jug along with the geraniums (also started from seeds I saved last fall). Isn't gardening fun! I hope you're having a great week! ~Margie😍💚🐞🦋

HiGreenthumbelina, Before you collect seed pods make sure they are completely dried out. Then when you get ready to sow, first soak seeds in water. Change daily for three days at least. It would also help if you can tuck the seeds in the refrigerator while soaking. This mimics how seed would be treated outside. The water soak is washing away growth inhibitors. After this period pot them up in soil, keep them moist. Or place them some place outdoors. So rain will help keep them watered. Keep in mind iris do their growing in fall winter early spring. Once summer sets in, most go dormant. The little baby iris will slowly grow, and will take probably about 3 yrs to be large enough to bloom. Happy irising.

It might, depends how large the rhizome is. If its a larger more mature peice you might get a bloom stalk. Otherwise, it may take a couple of seasons to bloom more. It depends on the type of iris also. Sibirian iris, vs. Bearded iris etc.

The place where I want to plant them right now is in the shade because I have tall brick wall but in the late spring there is a sun. Is it ok to plant them there? I don’t have any open spot where they can get sun now and in the spring.
@HookedandRooted

Hi there, I do believe they will do best in at least part sun 4-6 hours of sun per day. While they can be planted in shade, they may not bloom as well. Give it a shot, worst case, if you notice they dont bloom as well, then you can consider moving them.

Hi James, Yes there are fragrant irises. Most are the older more historic irises. I do know of one right offhand that is a variegated variety that smells like grapes. iris pallida 'Variegata' not exactly a bearded iris but still of the iris family. With newer hybrid irises it is a trade off. We lose the smell for bigger shower blooms. Actually there is more to the trade off but it is just easier to go with this. Happy Irising.
