Welcome to this Iris Guitar Tutorial by the Goo Goo Dolls! I must admit when I was first learning guitar this song always gave me trouble because i didn't know what to do with the alternative tuning and the song structure seemed confusing. However now I know better! It's actually an extremely simple song when broken down. In this lesson i'll teach you 2 different ways of playing this 90's classic.
1 - Standard(ish) tuning version - for those who don't want to fully detune their guitar this is the best option, it will only require you to detune the high e string. But even if you don't want to do that you could just avoid playing the high e string when strumming.
2 - Alternate tuning version - BDDDDD is the tuning for this studio version which is the exact way Johnny Rzeznik from the Goo Goo dolls plays it. In this tuning the song is much much simpler to play and sounds stunning. By detuning you might risk snapping strings though, so be careful!

It's a great tutorial and you had me all the way to part way through the alternative tuning play through (and then I had to chuckle) haha . You were wing'n it through that one but I don't blame you . Realistically you can play it all the same without the first string seeing as the tuning basically has it so the first 2 strings are the same and the second two strings are the same

The detuned version sounds so great !! My pinky is sooo short though, I absolutely cannot reach the G7 without touching other chords! Anyway, I already told you this but you really are a great teacher, we beginners are lucky to be able to learn with your methods =) Thank you for your dedication !

Hello internet friend! I also have quite short fingers but after almost 15 years of playing guitar I can recommend, that you look for guitars with modern C shape necks. It works wonder and always remember, your tool must fit you, not otherwise :)

I've really grown to love your videos even more than i was initially. I for one have a hard time reading and understanding chords/tabs through stuff like ultimate guitar, but this with rhythm and speed is just perfect. Came across your tutorial after spending a few hours on your tutorial, Lips of an Angel. This song is so powerful, I had to research it more after reading comments. Then I saw the original video and then their 2009 live performance in the rain. Reading the comments on that video was so deep. With heart crushing comments of what this song meant to them. Music surpasses all languages and connects directly to our souls.

This is definitely the best version I've heard/seen with regards to the standard tuning approach. The detune is simple enough and adds a lot. I've avoided covering this song live after first learning it cuz it's not worth the massive open tuning change for one song. Great job bro! Thank you :)

If it's common to hear a weird sound when you're tuning any of your strings you might want to have a guitar tech check out the nut, snapped strings are often caused by the string catching on a rough nut slot which needs to be filed down.

This is a great tutorial! I first heard about this song from some movie critic that covered it. The studio version sounds lovely, but I'm not gonna risk it since it would be difficult to transpose to my key and the tuning is wacky. So I'm gonna stick to the standard version. I'm so excited to perform this! Thank U so much! ❤️🎵

Great tutorial! I'm having a hard time with the chord, A/C# but I won't let it bring me down. Edit: After an hour of practicing, I can make the sound clear-ish. Really proud of this progress Edit2: I can play the whole song now! All it took was 2 weeks and patience to learn. Also, an inspiration which is my mother
