Iris Planting Guide // How to Plant and Divide Bearded Iris Rhizomes // Northlawn Flower Farm

Bearded Iris rhizomes should be planted in July, August, or September. They need at least 6 weeks to develop a well-established root system before the first hard frost. They need full sun and well draining soil in order to bloom and thrive.
Iris rhizomes should be planted at or just barely below the surface of the soil. The tops of the rhizomes should be barely visible and the roots are spread out and facing downward. Irises that are planted too deeply can result in rot and/or no flowering.
Dig a hole about 4 inches deep and create a small mound of soil in the center of the planting hole. Place the rhizome on top of the soil mound, and spread out the roots on either side. In extremely hot climates, covering the rhizome with 1 inch of soil is recommended. Firm the soil tightly around the roots, remembering to leave the top of the rhizome slightly exposed.
Space the rhizomes 12-24 inches apart and water thoroughly. Do not mulch Bearded Iris.
Provide good air circulation and keep the area free of weeds and debris to ensure a healthy stand of gorgeous Irises come spring.
Irises will need to divided every 3-5 years in order to maintain bloom vigor. In mid to late summer, dig up a clump of rhizomes, and carefully divide them into individual rhizomes. Discard the old, spent rhizomes in the center of the clump, and keep the healthy outer rhizomes for replanting. Trim down the leaves to reduce stress on your transplant, and then replant just as you would a new rhizome.

My small clump of iris (and I'm not sure of the variety -- I think they're a wild variety), are separating with a "hole" in the middle. I think they are past due for a division. Will follow your process next growing season, after they finish flowering! Thank you! and the arrangement at the end of the video is stunning!

Thanks for this comprehensive and short tutorial. I tossed gifted ones into compost after I was certain I’d accidentally left too long without planting, and they’d completely dried out. Imagine my surprise when my entire spring compost bin was bursting with bearded iris plants! Wow!

They really are one of the hardiest plants around. We have way too many some years, and my husband literally tossed extras over our hill and yep, they took root and bloomed the next year!

I have often dug up and divided some of my Iris and failed to replant some of them before winter struck and they bloomed there on top of the ground the next spring. Iris are a great plant for beginner gardeners as long as they don't plant too deeply.

I watched other videos but your Iris care video is by far the clearest and most concise. Thank you. Lifting and dividing some very precious Iris from my mothers garden. She is in a nursing home now and asks how the Iris are growing every time we talk. I feel like I am the keeper of these Iris for the next generation.

My husband has been cutting everything along the fence line since we purchased the house 4 years ago. He hasn't got around to it yet and yesterday I discovered 4 Peony bushies and loads of Iris plants! I'm definitely going to dig them up and move them so he doesn't hack them down again 🤣

One of the best "how to" videos I have seen for iris care. Includes all the basics for success, simply and plainly presented. Don't skimp on following all her suggestions. Also another commenter's note about trimming extra-long roots is good. And trim off the ends of any broken roots above the damaged part. Also, you may clip and discard the foliage before digging, especially for heavily overgrown clumps (helps you see where the roots are and dig more accurately so rhizomes are not damaged when digging.) Another tip to minimize rhizome damage when digging old clumps is to try lifting the clumps with a garden fork and not a spade. (Like harvesting potatoes.) Pry the clump loose by going around it with the fork and leveraging under the clump as far as you can reach comfortably at each point around the clump, until it breaks free from the ground. If the clump is monster-sized from years of neglect, it may be necessary to use that spade to slice it (vertical jabs with the spade) into pieces you can handle more easily, even if a few of the rhizomes may be cut in the process.

Great minds think alike, I just did a video on both dividing Iris and Planting Iris. You can also trim the roots to plant more easily when they are very long. I learned that at a local Iris grower. Iris are a huge part of my gardens, I love them and keep adding more though I am running out of room. I am sharing a bunch I have divided with my cousin, who is just starting her garden. Iris are so easy they make a great beginner gardener plant. I have that light lavender iris you show, it is a vintage one that has such a sweet scent. I gave away many bouquets this Spring but I have yet to master such beautiful arrangements. Yours is just gorgeous.

You said to plant irises so that the top of the rhizome is barely visible. Later in the video I think you're making an exception to that in hot climates, when you say to cover the rhizome with one inch of soil. Correct? I live in south Texas, where we usually have hot summers and mild winters. Also, so the planting time be more lax down here, rather than July through September. with less chance of frost? Thank you for the video. Have always loved irises since my brother and I played as kids in my grandmother's back yard, who had lots of them.

How come the “original old and spent middle rhizome” needs to be discarded? Will they not perform well anymore? I would have assumed they’d multiply again in a few years after being replanted?

I wanted to ask you about the cohabitation between your cats and your lilies, I understand lilies are rather toxic to cats and was wondering how you deal with this, given that you grow outstandingly beautiful lilies in your farm... I am not sure how Danielle does it but I cut the stamens off as soon as the flower opens, thus removing the anthers that hold the pollen. It is the pollen that is deadly for cats, they can brush against the plant and get pollen on their fur, then as they groom themselves they lick the pollen. It causes kidney failure. Cutting the stamens off prevents that.

I have Iris’s in my yard and they are planted in the shade, maybe filtered light, and they bloom every year. They are tall and dark purple. Do you think this is because of the variety? I planted some in full sun and they died.

Hi friend! Perhaps they are a different variety of Iris. Iris foetidissima is the most shade tolerant. Crested Iris (Iris cristata) will bloom in partial shade, and Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica) will be able to bloom in partial shade as well.

Usually if your garden center is selling rhizomes, they may be planted right away. There is no advantage to waiting. Plant no later than mid-September in Zone 6a.

Are you using these at all in bouquets ? I find that they hold up poorly and drip 'dye' for want of a better word. Any tips are appreciated.

Pick stems when buds are just starting to unfurl; early morning is best time of day to pick. Flowers last longest when kept in a cool environment (avoid direct sun on the bouquet,keep away from heat sources) and a cut-flower preservative like those used by florists is mixed into the vase water. Pinch off spent blossoms or discard spent stems as soon as the flowers start to wilt.
