If you've ever really listen to the drum part in American Pie, you'll hear what most drummers cringe and run away from. You get a feeling of a rhythm, but it is speckled with almost random accents and counter beats. That his band can play this song, AND so many others of different styles in the same concert is insane. They are quite possibly the greatest cover/studio/concert band in existence.

Weird Al is a serious rabbit hole. This is one of my favorite songs of his. Others include Amish Paradise and Word Crimes. For this song, he actually wrote it before Phantom Menace was released. He wrote the (mostly complete) lyrics based on trailers and leaks on Star Wars forums. When he went to get permission from George Lucas to do it and get his blessing, Lucas told him a couple details for minor edits, but he got almost the entire story into this song before even seeing the movie. George Lucas loves this song, by the way. So does Don McLean, the guy who wrote American Pie, and has even admitted to having to stop himself from singing the wrong lyrics in concert.

To be fair, from everything I've ever come across, with the exception of the Coolio miscommunication, other musicians tend to hold him in very high regard, and a pretty sizable number of those he's parodies fall into the category started(I think?) by Nirvana, that being they felt like they'd made it once "Weird" Al wanted to spoof one of their songs. :)

I went to school with this guy. When I was in high school, he worked on the Doctor Demento show in LA, and was on the radio in the background. When I went college, (yes, I really went to college) he was at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo working at the campus radio station. In 1978 (yes I went to college in the 70's) I spent the summer in the Dorms, and one morning at 3:00 am, the girls woke us up (the whole dorm), and gave us donuts. Of course, we had to return the favor, so we got someone at the campus radio station to say "its time to WAKE UP!" (at 3:00am). That person was none other than Weird Al Yankovich. Weird Al is incredibly talented. He wanted to parody Nirvana but he couldn't get in touch with them, he found out Nirvana was going to be on Saturday Night Live so he called SNL to get in touch with them because he always asks for permission before he does it, he got Kurt Cobain on the phone and Kurt thought it was a prank, then realized it was real and told Weird Al he could do a parody as long as it wasn't about food. For the record, Coolio came out later and admitted his objection to Weird Al's parody, even after seeing how innocuous Amish Paradise was, was a dumb mistake that he'd apologized for. I'm honestly shocked you've never heard of him, here in America there is no higher praise for a musician than to be honored with a Weird Al parody as he only writes them for songs he personally likes. Edit: if you'd like a recommendation of his original works I strongly recommend One More Minute. He tried to get into an advanced screening of the film, but was rebuffed. Weird Al is such an iconic part of the music industry. He can sing and rap and churn out a funky catchy polka. When he's doing up somebody else's song, it's not just a parody of the music, but often of the official music video as well. If you're gonna dive deeper down the Weird Al rabbit hole, I might recommend to make sure you've seen the original music video for what he's parodying first, in order to get the most out of Al's version of it. Madonna and Michael Jackson served up some great fodder for his musical twists, among others.

He's done a lot of great parodies over the years. The first one he did in front of a national audience was "Another One Rides the Bus", a parody of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust". The one that really put him on the map was "Eat It", parodying Michael Jackson's "Beat It". I think it was just last year that he released a comedic biopic on a digital online channel. It's comedic because he exaggerated a few things in it. A lot of "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" takes place in the early to mid 80s. Weird Al is played by Daniel Radcliffe, while Rainn Wilson (from the US version of "The Office") plays eccentric radio host Dr. Demento. Weird Al himself appears in the film as a record executive. It also has Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna. They featured her in it because he parodied her song "Like a Virgin" as "Like a Surgeon".

I've been a fan of Weird Al since the 1980s. I have a son born in 1976 and a daughter born in 1988, and BOTH have been brought up on his music. My daughter's first live concert was Weird Al and it was life changing for her. A belated 12th birthday gift, plus she actually got to meet Al. Over time, Weird All has gone from somewhat amateurish but still clever song parodies to considerable sophistication in performance, writing, and filming while still carrying out a grueling touring schedule. I consider the best of his work to be in this century, following 20 years of practice and hard work. It pays to watch the original musician's song video before watching Weird Al's version; he often matches the original while adding comedic flourishes. Also, some musicians work with Al to provide him the use of the musician's own video locations/stages, teach him the original video choreography, even perform somewhere in the parody itself. This was true of Michael Jackson, James Brown, Nirvana, and Dire Straits. Also, Weird Al is so respected, personally and professionally, in the entertainment business that his videos are full of well-known comedy personalities. Some recommended songs you might do reactions to on your channel: -One More Minute (an original Doo Wop breakup song) -Smells Like Nirvana (Smells Like Team Spirit parody) -Gump (Lump parody) -Word Crimes (Blurred Lines parody) -Foil (Royals parody) -Tacky (Happy parody) -Handy (Fancy parody) -Party in the CIA (Party in the USA parody) -Couch Potato (Lose Yourself parody) -White & Nerdy (Ridin' Dirty parody) -Germs (an original in the style of Nine Inch Nails) -Hardware Store (an original, but includes a truly breathless rap of hardware store products thrilling to hear)

All has been making parodies for a vey long time, he started in college in the late 70s. He almost always asks permission first before recording a parody. One that he almost got in trouble for was his version of Born This Way. Lady Gaga's agent said no when he called, but when Gaga found out, she said yes. The result was a song called Perform This Way.

There's 40 years of his genius. The genius is he can keep an independent story theme going in the lyrics, he can mirror the exact song he's parodying with lyrics that rhyme and as if that wasn't hard enough, it's all funny.

Hope your visit to California was a success. Thinking back to your Beach Boys reaction, if you admire tight harmonies you should listen to The Mamas and The Papas. If you are not aware of them, they were a folk rock vocal group whose harmonies were also "insanely good." For your purposes, because The Mamas and the Papas did so many television appearances (the Ed Sullivan Show and the Hollywood Palace), there are plenty of quality performance videos from which to react. Just beware that if you review their history on a video, they had some rough patches. (If you do go into their histories, please make note of the fact that Cass Elliot did not choke to death on a ham sandwich.)

Back in the 1980's, he had a thing where he would constantly parody Michael Jackson. In a department store, there was a big display with Micheal Jackson's album Bad. On the cover MJ is wearing a red leather jacket with a ridiculous number of zippers. The display was 3 LP's high, but the bottom record was Weird Al's Even Worse. WA was wearing a similar jacket with even more zippers.

Yankovich is his real name. He was a student at the college I was attended, at the time that I was working on my engineering degree. He was also a DJ on the campus radio station: KCPR (K Cal Poly Radio).

That was a terrible summary of the Coolio situation. Fair use does indeed mean that he can, if he wants, release parodies without permission, but Al actually did ask permission. He asked his "people" to talk to Coolio's "people", which is how these things usually go down, and Al was told that everything was okay so he did the song, but he never talked to Coolio directly, and it turns out that there was miscommunication and Coolio had never given his blessing. Al deeply respects the wishes of the artists and has scrapped many parodies because he wasn't given permission, even though he could still legally release them if he wanted to.

I love Weird Al’s parodies. He's very clever and witty. Sometimes I like his parodies better than the original songs. LOL There was a small controversy back when Napster was a thing. People would write parodies and say it was him. Most were offensive and some racist, which is something Weird Al is definitely not about. I remember my sister saying back then she’d stop liking him, because of those songs. Only to find out years later in an interview that it wasn’t him.

If you do any more reactions to Weird Al's music please be sure to listen to whatever song of which he's singing a parody - just to be sure you can appreciate how brilliant he is! 😊 The song you listened to here is a parody of "American Pie" by singer Don McLean. It's often noted that Kurt Cobain of Nirvana actually considered the fact that Weird Al wanted to write a parody of one of their songs as a sign that they had truly "made it"! (And Coolio actually reconsidered his objection about Weird Al doing a parody of Gangster's Paradise. Coolio even told Vice magazine in 2014 that “I apologized to “Weird Al” a long time ago and I was wrong.”.

Well, Weird Al is a very witty fellow who knows how to rhythm and rhyme. His parodies are almost always brilliant and most work spectacularly. He is best in small doses though. I saw him in concert and by the end of the show I was done, and the shtick just wasn't working any more. They just made a movie about him with Daniel Radcliffe playing Weird Al. Haven't seen it, but maybe it could work for twich at the movies with Diane and Chewie. Diane goes on about how comfortable Chewie is in his bed on the shelf, and how much he like to stay there. Next cut empty dog bed and no Chewie for rest of review. The games afoot for the true story, Watson.

If you plan to continue this exploration of Weird Al, one thing to note of his music that has videos, is to pay attention not just to the music and lyrics, but too the music videos as well. He often mirrors and parodies very closely the video as well as the song itself - One of great examples of this is the infamous Amish Paradise, but some others great examples (IMO) are 'Smells Like Nirvana' (Smells like Teen Spirit), 'Fat' (Bad), 'White and Nerdy' (Ridding Dirty), and 'Tacky' (Happy). It really is astounding the attention to detail Al has always employed in his craft.

I've followed his work since. He is a genius! I actually saw him once at Disneyworld with his family, but we didn't go up to him. He deserves vacation! He makes a point of asking permission, and thought he had gotten it from Coolio's record company.
