Sassafras root is what root beer was originally made from- hence ROOT Beer. The whole tree is useful. Cut into firewood or lumber, it reeks like root beer as it dries, and makes your fire smell wonderful!

Sassafras USED to be a main flavoring agent for root beer in the US but in the 70s the US government realized that saffrol oil, the essential chemical in sassafras, could in unnaturally high doses be used to synthesize MDMA, but the excuse they used for banning it for commercial use was that it was carcinogenic (which again, was only true about lab rats given unnaturally high, concentrated doses saffrol oil that no human would ever consume). In lieu of sassafras, many soda makers started using wintergreen instead, which has a flavor very similar to sassafras.

smknochs1 - The way I heard it (and I was there, and as well, a big Root Beer and Sarsaparilla fan), it was found to be 'cancerous' and thus banned in the late '50s. In the '70s, they found out that the bothersome chemical was mainly in the 'root', not the leaves, so, the leaves have been used for authentic 'Sarsaparilla' flavor, ever since then. Not that many makers bother, since using artificial flavorings doesn't seem to bother most soda drinkers. Anyway, that's my memory of it, as a kid. As well, the flavor is commonly used in Cajun cooking, particularly gumbo and jambalaya.

What a weird mix of candy. The first three were all what I call "grandma candy." Horehound candy is a very old fashion, herbal candy that the Romans used to cure certain ailments. My father used to love it because he had it as a child in the 1930s and 40s! I was never all that partial to it. Sassafras is a tree in North America. I have two in my backyard, actually. When I used to go camping, I'd boil some of the leaves in water to make tea. Never had gummi chickens feet before, but they all made that sound pretty delicious, and the pumpkin/almond things too. Fun video! Always great to see Lolsy in an episode. She must have a busy schedule because it's a somewhat rare thing to see her in a video these days. All of the TRYers in this video are a joy!

"Upstate New York" is the 39 counties north of New York City & Long Island. When we hosted exchange students from Gremany & France, they were shocked as to how far our Upstate town was from New York City. Our small town near Rochester was 360 miles (580 km) from the Big Apple. Our French exchange student said that Rome was closer to Paris than we were close to NYC. What was fun was to show her that we had both Upstate. Rome, NY and Paris, NY are one county and only 25 miles (40 km) apart, heh...

This is profoundly and entirely incorrect. Upstate begins past Syracuse. Buffalo and Rochester are entirely West NY. Are you really lumping in the Finger Lakes, ROC, BUF, SYR, and Northern NY regions into one?? Let's not forget the Tug Hill plateau, Adirondacks foothills, and the Thousand Islands region. Speaking as someone who grew up in Pulaski, went to school near Rome, and now lives in NYC.

@@jakey1387 : 7th grade NY History at APW Central School just south of you. "Upstate NY" was defined as everything north of Westchester County, broken into regions. Lower Hudson, Upper Hudson, Capitol District, Leatherstocking Region, Adirondacks, Catskills, North Country, Central NY, Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, Genesee Valley, Western NY, Niagara Region and Chautauqua. Many hours were spent arguing over the boundaries and fine details. That was in 1960. God only knows what they teach now, I graduated 56 years ago and none of my schools even exsist anymore. They were merged, rebuilt, closed by the state, etc... Pick your poison and make the most of it...

These are produced about 12 miles (20 km) from where I grew up. There's an Irish connection, as the store where they're sold is called Pickens General Store and is in the PIckens Building erected by John Pickens, an Irish immigrant. I'm seeing an Amish horse and buggy on the bags, so I assume these are produced by the local Amish community.

I grew up in Upstate NY and loves Horehound Drops. I can still find them at a Bass Pro Shop in Florida. They missed out on Rock Candy. It is pure Crystalized Sugar.
