"Americans have a fondness for Irish".... The reason is pretty simple--more Irish immigrated to America than Irish currently live in Ireland (5 million or so between 1840-1920, between the potato famine and immigration to the U.S., the Irish population declined so much that MORE of them lived in the U.S. than there)--in fact, there are several times more Irish in the U.S. (33 million) than in Ireland proper (4.5 Million). Irish things are popular in the U.S. because we have a massive Irish population.

*+Otto Acid* Absolutely. Like right now, we're hazing the Muslims and Mexicans. Later, we'll look back on it with shame, but for now, a lot of people feel justified, so, like before, it'll continue until it peters out... or Trump becomes president, in which case it's anybody's guess what's going to happen.

It's basically taking turns. Like Nonprotestants, British, Blacks, Europeans, Asians, Jews, Women, Muslims, Hispanics, then far down the line when a possible new two countries arise from the USA (Hispanic for Southwest and Asian for West/Northwest)... then it'll be the white's turn in general.

I am very fond of Irish people. My grandpa was 100% Irish (his parents both immigrated from Westmeath) and he was so funny and me like to call me "Little Miss McGillicuddy". So, even though I am only 1/4 Irish, I am happy to claim my ancestors and learn more about their homeland. Can't wait to visit there again!

In the old days, Irish (and also Scottish) immigrants up in appalachia made their soap in big blocks, and since it's too much trouble to take the whole block of soap to wash up, would instead cut a sliver off with a knife. So that's where that comes from.

Well the Irish American story is one of the most amazing immigrate stories in American history. Irish culture is ingrained in overall American culture anyway. Even our sports have teams that use Irish culture. America has a strong love for Irish Culture because it's part of American culture. Toughness, freedom with a little arrogance but in a good way.

From 1720s till the early 20th Century nearly 4.2 Million Irish people immigrated. Initially most were from the North. Currently 10% of the population of the US identify as having some Irish Background. It's surprisingly a big thing. That being said please don't Judge North Americans idea of Ireland on a Misogynist bar, a cartoon from the late 80s/early90s and two adverts for the 70s. Instead judge it on the movie Leap Year.

Rob Elliott How exactly is it a "misogynist bar"? Are people who go there women haters? Do you not know the difference between sexism and misogyny? Feminists don't seem to.
@Kaziklu
@Kaziklu 9 жыл бұрын
The bar refereed to is one used to measure not a place to get drunk. Misogyny is the dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women. Sexism is Prejudice, Stereotyping, or discrimination against the opposite sex. Some of video's shown were showing women as little more then objects and showed a prejudice against women being nothing more than arm candy. This Prejudice is ingrained in many parts of US culture today, and was very much so at the time of the Irish Spring ad. As such it does fit the definition for misogyny. I'm not a Feminist I'm also not a MRA or what ever those idiots call them selves. I support equality but I also don't support Feminist Sexism. I don't feel the need to belittle anyone, to make anything up, lie, or bash others in a malicious and callous way. I firmly believe in stating the facts and letting them speak. I of course realize that you don't care and likely just want to attack someone you think is a "SJW".

I think that the take away from this for Irish people should be that they should realize how much Americans kind of idolize Ireland and Irish people in general. We really like them. That is why you can name a product Irish Soap and it will sell here, because we like them. That should give them some warm fuzzy feelings... =) I think it's because a lot of us have Irish ancestry. I myself am more than half Irish. I truly think that your blood calls for your homeland in some way, because when I see pictures of Ireland it stirs something in me that I can't explain.

i think American fondness with all things Irish is cause so darn many of us descend from Ireland. As the people of the United States, we almost all descend from people who have come from somewhere else in the past two or three hundred years. Many people still honor the places their ancestors come from and hold these places in a special part of their heart. for instance, i am of Mexican and Irish descent and i keep both a mexican and irish flag in my room as well as the Star Spangled flag

hello, Yellow Fruitcake, do you know what the word "Descent" means. In the United States nearly everyone descends from somewhere else and maintain a certain level of honor for where their ancestors came from. it does not mean she is claiming to be an Irish person or live in Irish culture. it just means she knows where her family comes from.

Being a kid in the 1980s (and early 1990s) was really fun and lighthearted! :) I always shake my head at old, cheesy commercials, even many I grew up watching. After watching that, I feel like you should do a Bank of New York in Ireland commercial in similar fashion...

Lol we Americans have a deep-rooted appreciation for the Irish, not because we think you're "good with money", but because your people saved our asses in both the American Revolution and our Civil War. Not to mention the fact that during the great potato famine, and other times of mass immigration between Ireland and America, your people helped mold the US into what was once the greatest country on Earth. The Irish were an invaluable asset to the colonies, and without your help, the industrial revolution may never have happened at all.

Kind of ironic you say that the industrial revolution would not happen without the irish,because thats not how we see ourselves,we see ourselves as more of a rural agricultural people .It was the vikings not the native irish who established the first towns.still agriculture is our main industry although.Rural depopulation is a big issue in ireland with most of the jobs in dublin and other cities.the classic irish values of community and friendliness are inevitably diluted when we go to live in the cities.Not to say that people in dublin are not friendly they are,but it would be a pity if rural ireland went away.
