Behind the video :
Sister Wives is a program that follows the lives of the Brown family from Utah, who lead a polygamist lifestyle. Kody, his three wives, and their 12 collective children all live under the one roof. Considering polygamy isn't all that popular here in Ireland, we decided to get our contributor's thoughts on Kody, his family, and their unique way of living.

The show just irritates me. I remember the first wife had a fling with another man and people were attacking her online for cheating. Like her husband is sleeping with 3 other women so I mean I don't blame her for trying to find love else where. I'm sad she ended up staying with her husband. I'm sad that any of the women do. Why is it okay for the men to have multiple wives but the women can only have one husband? Just ugh.
@pinkysworn
@pinkysworn 8 жыл бұрын
The "man" ended up being a woman who was catfishing and blackmailing her. Sounds like a shit situation, especially for someone who was clearly incredibly lonely and looking for someone to love her. She hasn't been happy with Kody for years.

+pinkysworn yeah I'm really sad that she got catfished. It just irritated me that everyone attacked her online for "cheating" when her husband has been sleeping for other women for years. Like give the woman a break, I can tell she has such an unhappy marriage with him and my heart just breaks for her.

Because, that is the norms in their religion? They don't want other husbands. If they want other husbands they can leave that religion and go to one that allows it, or no religion at all? People can be polyandrous, it is about whether you actually WANT to be.

Polyandry (one wife, multiple husbands.) Polygamy is one husband, multiple wives and polyamory is a mixed bag of multiples. Polyamory arrangements have been, historically, very fluid (people come and go, no fixed commitment.) Polyandry rarely works (men just can't share - unless they are gay and spelling each other.) There are nonreligious polygamous families (women join because one wants to be a stay at home mom, one wants to be a professional but also have children who have family care and one doesn't want to have children but likes having children under foot when she is home from work - everybody brings mutual support to each other and the man is there basically because he doesn't require batteries.)
@NymphetMephisto
@NymphetMephisto 8 жыл бұрын
+rosieoutlook With all due respect, you are right about polyamory but wrong about polygamy. To a native Greek speaker like me the differences are pretty obvious. Polygamy refers to marriage with more than one spouse regardless of sex. The word in Greek means literally "multiple marriages". While polyandry means "multiple men/husbands" and refers to the practice of marriage to more than one man. Polygyny is the word for marriage to more than one woman and, you guessed it, the literal translation is "multiple women/wifes".

Fun fact: While the title uses the word "wives", the male subject is only actually legally married to 1 female on this show as both US federal law in the form of the Edmunds-Tucker Act and the state constitution of Utah expressly ban multiple, concurrent marriages.

@pinkysworn

Fun Fact #2: There's a bit of a legal loophole in Saskatchewan provincial law that overrides the federal marriage laws (which prohibit polygamy), so technically you can be legally married to more than one person at a time here.
@kimberlyhaines107
@kimberlyhaines107 8 жыл бұрын
+pinkysworn Wasn't it too that some people were wondering if they were receiving federal aide like food stamps? If not them I've heard that criticism for the rest of the community. It also makes me think of how some are trying to use the 1978 ruling that allowed Peyote to be legal as long as it was during religious ceremonies BECAUSE it was part of a "religious doctrine" or what have you. Some in the FLDS have expressed interest in using that ruling as allowing for an exception since it's part of their religious beliefs. But pretty much no expert thinks they stand a chance trying to use that argument. They probably will never win.

@kimberlyhaines107
@kimberlyhaines107 8 жыл бұрын
I think because they don't always try to be politically correct. Don't get me wrong - I'm all for political correctness, but sometimes you want to be able to watch a string of videos where people are just blunt and honest, and everyone in the comments talks shit about the contributors or the subject matter like you get on Buzzfeed. Facts. kind of has the right idea in maybe just staying mainly with reaction videos and minimal social issue videos. Like their video in support of gay marriage in Ireland is one of a few like that. So less chances to get people pissed off. Most of the time.
@ruffey1748
@ruffey1748 8 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying but sooner rather than later, Facts will go the same way. And the reason is this: people like the identity-political content. It's the reason why BuzzFeed over took College Humour despite beginning around the same time with similar content ideas. BuzzFeed gets billions of views per month, because people like their political stuff. Even REACT incorporates political content into their videos. People want to connect much deeper than a 5 minute video on "15 reasons we're laughing at this person's hoarder addiction on TLC". The left leaning multimdeium media empire is here to stay, so if you don't like, it there are other places online you can hang out. And enjoy Facts in its early days while they last.

@stevenclark5173
@stevenclark5173 8 жыл бұрын
There's nothing to enforce. There's no law against living with and having kids with multiple women. Adultery laws would be thrown out as unconstitutional if they tried to enforce any that did exist.
@randomcrap4230

+Steven Clark Actually in states that recognize common law marriage, like Utah apparently, it is illegal to live with more than one woman, and you DO get arrested for it. They were under investigation for polygamy when this show began, and they talk about how many families they saw get split up and how secret the polygamist culture has to be there because of it. That was why they had to move to Las Vegas in the 2nd season.

oh my goodness, my mom and I met this guy once, and he was so creepy. something about him was so off. He was acting so weird around my mom. (This was years ago, so I had no idea what was going on. Now that I think about it I think he was flirting.) Something about this man is just terrifying. Also this guy is not a Mormon. I think he is FLDS which is like a break off of the LDS church. These guys kept the polygamy, and follow someone else. Anyways creepy. He freaks me out.

@jrjrdiablo_the_devils_advocate
@jrjrdiablo_the_devils_advocate 8 жыл бұрын
They follow some president in their distinct sect of Mormonism. I think this particular group is in the Apostolic_United_Brethren. They do this bc of a doctrine that JSmith & BYoung gave about polygamy. The mainstream LDS (mormon) church doesnt practice it, even though it is still in their doctrine & they are silent about if the practice will be in place in the afterlife. In essence all these groups including the mainstream group believe that you have to be married in order to reach the highest level of heaven. Their entire doctrine has many conflicts with the Bible. No body outside their religion considers them Christian.

This is still in the mainstream Mormon doctrine. The difference is they will practice polygamy in the afterlife. The FLDS just don't accept the revelation from the SLC mormons that ended polygamy on earth. Btw, Mormons aren't Christian. They say they are, but they have their own definition of what it means. Basically they believe the Bible is not translated correctly, that they have a correct revelation of true Christianity & they don't believe Jesus is God....so no, they dont follow the orthodox definition of Christianity..

Romana Amatucci you misunderstood me dude, I said (or at least tried to) that I didn't think it wouldn't be okay for _them_ - as in they wouldn't approve if any of them got another husband. Polyamory is all OK by me, as long as everyone involved is informed and consenting. The thing that weirds me out about the religious sort of polyamory/polygamy is the whole traditional thing with the multiple wives being submissive to the husband, with him being able to have multiple women when if the woman so much as looked at another man they would be cheating. If they're happy like this then fine, but I feel like there's a big difference between religious and non-religious polyamory.

@kimberlyhaines107

I'm atheist, but if people immediately give you the attitude because they think the "Sister Wives" is representative of everyone - they got a few screws loose. I study religion even though I absolutely have never believed in it, but the FLDS is far smaller than people seem to realize sometimes. And complaining that it was once official doctrine...Well nearly every denomination of Christianity has had something in their doctrine they'd rather not talk about. Kind of lying insisting otherwise. I can't condone slapping someone upside the head (assault charges are a non-no), but perhaps mentally imagining slapping them up the head will suffice. And if other atheists act like asses - I apologize. Unless someone is being horrid to me (like the religious person who said I should be put to death...) I generally see no reason to be asses about the whole thing.

+Kimberly Haines Funny you say this because usually the first thing out of someones mouth upon realizing you are/were Mormon is "how many wives are part of the family?" Polygamy has never been answered to me properly, along with many other questions. I can't label myself into one category of belief system. I am learning as I move through life. I choose to be kind and happy. I try to help others along my path. I won't degrade someone for their belief system. I also do not feel ones beliefs should be forced upon another. Logic to always be used. I do appreciate the fact that this video is light hearted. Life is too short not to laugh.

+Danell Parkhurst You don't get that as much here, since our city has a really big Mormon population even though we're in the middle of California. I rarely hear anyone say that even as a joke. But I have a good number of friends kind of like you. They believe in a higher power, but can't agree with organized religion, and so they simply say they are "spiritual" - but they're just as happy as my friends that go to church. I do wonder if some people are trying to be funny, and/or witty with the wives question. Or maybe they're just a fucking idiot...

Yeah< I grew up in Florida. Not many Mormons out there. Now I live in Idaho. Tons here. So the Polygamy subject is not brought up much here. I am not even sure I would call myself "Spiritual". I am just very against overbearing Patriarchy.
@kimberlyhaines107
@kimberlyhaines107 8 жыл бұрын
+Danell Parkhurst And that patriarchy is always more interesting I feel when it crops up in religion. Like in Catholicism - though I'm one of those who feel they should follow the custom of the Anglican (and even Eastern Orthodox to some degree) Church allowing marriage for priests. Relegating women to pretty much just nuns (and saints), and other issues, isn't exactly helping. I think the patriarchy still in many religions is what might be turning some away.

And when Jews built boats and sailed to America...Thank you Book of Mormon musical. But being atheist I still respect them as a religious denomination even if some of the doctrine boggles my mind. I'll always remember talking to my mom and I always knew she was raised Catholic though my family was Protestant, and then when I was teen she told me she had joined the Mormon Church. I was utterly perplexed, but she told me it was just after her divorce from her first husband (who thought it was okay to cheat since he was sterile) or the second who abandoned her while she was pregnant, and at the time it helped her. Then she looked at me and said "In hindsight I have no idea what I was thinking, and that's why I left after a year. And they still kept contacting me." Like over a DECADE after she left when she married my dad and my sister was a teenager (and she's 11 years older than me).
@kimberlyhaines107
@kimberlyhaines107 8 жыл бұрын
But I have too many Mormon friends - as for some reason my city of 515,000+ in the middle of California has a large Mormon population, to really be blindsided. It's quite common to see missionaries biking all over every day. Especially as one of the wards is literally next to a State University. Never mind that my cousin married a Mormon. My whole family drinks alcohol (though no one is alcoholic), and my cousin and his family never went to church whereas my mom (her brother is my cousin's dad) dragged us every Sunday. He did sports and partied in college - but his wife wouldn't marry unless he converted. He gave up alcohol, took up home improvement (which he is scarily good at), and they've been married since 2008, but waited 5 years before having kids. He can afford a big home in Huntington Beach with two kids, and about the only thing he really had to overcome is the mandatory tithing of 10%. He makes DAMN good money, and likes to plan every financial decision.
@kimberlyhaines107
@kimberlyhaines107 8 жыл бұрын
When you make hundreds of thousands of dollars right out of Cal Poly because your first job was with Boeing and then other Silicon Valley jobs - well I'm sure giving away 10% is like torture. This is the guy who could afford a trip to Germany before being in the workforce less than a year. He goes along with it now, but he confessed to my gran that while he likes Bible study he stops at a certain point with the stranger parts of the doctrine - though he isn't going to tell anyone but my family that. But he's happy even if the move still perplexes the rest of the family. Funnily enough I'm the only atheist on that side of the family and was the most accepting from the get go, and the warmest to Whitney even when they were dating. But there isn't much positive to say about my uncle's wife (and my cousin's mother), so...I apologize for the number of comments. The KZfaq app for some reason stops letting me type after a certain number of characters. It's irritating as hell...

I first watched this show thinking it was going to be a trainwreck, and I was skeptical about the lifestyle too at first. I have watched it from the beginning because I was curious. Having seen nothing about polygamy except the nasty child rapist pervert cults you hear about on the news, I was extremely skeptical to say the least. But after watching them and hearing their story and "getting to know them" so to speak, I actually don't find them all that abnormal. It may definitely not be a lifestyle I choose for myself, but it seems to work for them. All of their children seem like well mannered, well adjusted, productive members of society. Neither the children nor the wives seem like brainwashed robots and all still maintain their individuality, which seems to be encouraged and celebrated by their husband and father. They seem to be just normal people in a slightly abnormal social structure. So rock on, if that's what works for you, Browns! Whatever legal adults consent to and doesn't harm anyone else is cool in my book.
