we seem to forget our immigrants of the past... the Irish were treated badly by americans simply because they were different when they first immigrated to america.

Well said, Mr. Kenny. Thank you for standing with the huddled masses. These days, many Americans are so frightened of refugees that they're afraid to even try to help. We could see the resentment in little Donnie's eyes, as you spoke so eloquently about compassion and courage; something he will never understand. Hummm.... I seem to have generated the false impression that hicks only live in America. Sorry about that Americans. Here's my definition of a hick, and it transcends all borders. Not like the alternatives would have done any better. He did better than I expected, didn't have high hopes for him at the top. Basically had to do what the Troika told us to do and implement austerity as tactfully as possible. Now Varadkar is an awful successor. But Fine Gael will be looking for another leader after this election, probably after postponed Tipperary poll.

As an Irish person here in Dublin, I can only say how completely outraged we all are that this thick gobshite didn't stand up to Trump and only kissed his ass. We all here in Ireland have outright rejected Trump and all that he stands for, and we even made a 2 million person petition asking Kenny to not interact with Trump, which would mean almost half the entire country singed it. We stated in it that we wanted him to not go over for St. Patricks day, and if he was to actually go as only part of a official government act, then he was supposed to unequivocally reject this president and not shake his hand in friendship. Not only did he not live up to what he promised us all here, but he even happily spoke with him, shook his hand, and got on with Trump like they're friends. This is an absolute outrage and Edna Kenny will be kicked out of government as Tiosach for this (AKA: Prime minister for no-Irish speakers). We have all suffered in serious poverty and through the famine 150 years ago, and America was one of our only beacons of hope for us. Now with this president rejecting the majority of immigrants from impoverished countries, we all here remember what hardships we once endured and are outraged that a man like this could refuse so many who suffer pointlessly. So this will not stand and I can promise that Edna Kenny will politically suffer for what he's done on behalf of the Irish people.

You really don't understand islamism, do you? They can blow up the capital building in your city but you still wouldn't understand. If everyone was like you, they would have a caliphate in Europe where you would do your submissive kissing and your daughters suffering from lost freedom, families from lost safety, country and freedoms. You can have an army of millions coming to Europe without guns and you will never understand it.

Jetpack Rorschach you do not talk for the Irish people, I am also Irish and from Dublin and fundamentally disagree with you! Where is the Irish petition with the 2 million signatures? There is no such Irish petition . Enda Kenny did a very good job in America and I applaud him! Also the vast vast majority of Irish people wanted Enda Kenny to meet Donald Trump for Patrick's day. Please stop spreading fake news about the Irish people and their views! Btw it's "Taoiseach" learn how to spell it before you attempt a comment

simplistic at best, yes Trump is odious but Kenny applied about as much pressure as he could given the circumstances and its own subtle way this was more successful than Merkel's awkward meeting - what you're suggesting is the nuclear option and we loss access and media coverage for our tiny isle in a stunt that is quickly forgotten - better to stay in the room even or esp. if you're making the other side feel uncomfortable and question themselves - this was an appeal to Americans to be their better selves - they are starting to realise just what they've signed up for with cuts to healthcare and social protections.

St Patrick wasn't an immigrant he was a slave. Either he is ignorant of history, for deliberating trying mislead about the facts, due to all the terrible things the Irish did to the British in the first millennium. Irregardless it is a complete lie to say St Patrick was an immigrant, any more than it is to say the slaves brought to the USA were immigrants. Yet why hasn't this got the backlash Ben Carson faced?

No I notice how Trump isn't getting his way - how the American constitution is protecting hard-won rights. I notice how the majority of Europeans are rejecting the scapegoating of minorities for societal ills and are not fooled by those who propose simple solutions to complex problems in Austria, the Netherlands and soon France. And closer to home I notice how the Irish electorate are not taken in by the rhetoric of those on the extremes of the left or the right. Immigration and integration are challenges facing many Western democracies but so are the entrenched attitudes and demonising of the other based on the actions of the few and the lies of the many.

I guess white people (whatever that monolith means) didn't think through all the unintended consequences of plundering and interfering across the globe. I don't want to see ghettos and alternative value systems (like "honour" killings or FGM), I support the French ban on the face-veil (there seems to be some hyprocrisy amongst feminists and others (the police) when it comes to "cultural sensitives") but its too late to put the genie back in the bottle you address and manage these problems through sensible policy and inclusion - and getting tough with African warlords and Middle Eastern regimes (particular the Saudis) stoking conflict and the resulting mass-migration. Trump's ban is not about keeping America safe it's about playing the tough-guy - pretty soon his administrations three-ring circus is going to implode. I'd rather we have existential debates in Europe rather than the polarised politics and grandstanding of the US.

Saint Patrick went to Ireland before Ireland was a country and there was no citizenship of any kind. It was nothing more than borderless land oppupied by tribes of Celts. How does this make him an immigrant and not just a missionary? Doesn't that just make him an accomplice to the destruction of Celtic paganism and the introduction of a religion that would cause internal violence between Irish people for centuries?
@tessie7e
@tessie7e 7 жыл бұрын
Dillan Johnson We can rightly discuss the impact of spreading faith on indigenous cultures. However, I think it is worth noting, that the "tribes" believed the land was theirs, whether your anachronistic understanding of country and citizenship fails to recognize it or not. And any missionary who commits to remaining in the land he/she has sought to serve is by definition an immigrant. That said, it was clearly a rhetorical device to launch into the sentiments he truly wished to express in front of Donald J. Trump.
@dillan3253
@dillan3253 7 жыл бұрын
tessie7e The word "immigrant" was literally not even coined until over 1000 years after St. Patrick's death. Do not accuse me of anachronism and then expect me to take you seriously when you are guilty of the same thing. I'm not surprised, however, considering that you don't even seem to know what that word means in the first place. Immigration was not a concept until after the concept of nation-states existed. Land in the middle ages was not public, it was either owned by Kings or the church, but never the people that lived on it. The social contract between the government and people did not exist. St. Patrick was a bishop of the Catholic Church and his bishopic was church property, not the property of any Celts. He occupied the lands that he went to, he didn't "immigrate" there. Regardless of any of this, even if I agreed that St. Patrick was an immigrant to Ireland, the destruction of Celtic culture by a foreign religion is an excellent argument AGAINST immigration. Is that not the least bit ironic to you? What St. Patrick did to Ireland is precisely what Trump wants to avoid for America. The only reason St. Patrick is celebrated in the first place is because he was so effective at exterminating a culture and replacing it with a corrupt one that nobody any remembers the first.
