As others said IE and the government are not really interested in rail freight. But railway enthusiasts apparently are also not interested. A railway historian told me that the numbers of passengers and freight on trains or the income and expenditure account are not mentioned in railway history books as people are only interested in station layouts, type of locos used, and coaches and wagons available, how the line was built and when it closed and the railway staff. When I look at a railway history book the usage and economics of the line are of interest.

The 2021 version of this is about 3 seconds long.

They had a fantastic network and vision. But now it’s all gone and now the roads are full especially the M50 in Dublin as I use it once a fortnight and get stuck ☹️ It’ll all come back one day with the lines of Amazon wagons 👍🏻

Much better service back then. Now, there's only freight liners between Dublin and Ballina and logs from Ballina to Waterford. So sad to see how miserable Irish Rail have become.

It will never come back unless private operators are encouraged (not just permitted) to enter the market. IE have lost the marketing skills, the infrastructure (yards and lines gone) and indeed the will to continue. Problem is I don't see a queue of operators lining up to come in. That's a real pity as there is business here.

You have to wonder how real and serious this 'promo' is considering they were at this point starting to close down all lines west and south of Athlone (hence the station move across the river) and were more than happy to go along with the infamous official announcement of 'no further significant investment in rail in Ireland'. I just think this promo was an excuse to spend money rather than hustle for new business. A 1980s version of repainting the stations on the West Cork lines as they were closing them.

And then along came DPD and the likes. I don't think Irish rail does much of this work now do they?

We had an even better service in those days compared to DPD Amazon and Ebay even joom your waiting at least a month for delivery if we had contracts with China in those days it would be a 24 hour delivery service no BS
