Irish Setter Vs Golden Retriever

An Irish Setter can be a little bit bigger than an average Golden Retriever, but the differences aren't that significant. Ultimately, the size of your puppy will depend on your own genetics, so you should carefully examine the parents before you make your final decision. Both the female and male of both breeds tend to be smaller than the other. Nevertheless, the female Irish is slightly larger than the male, so it's important to choose a litter that looks like both parents.
While the physical appearances of the two breeds are very similar, there are a few differences. The Irish is more clingy and affectionate than the Golden, so it's better suited for family life. While both dogs love their owners, the Golden is more likely to bite if it is worried or distressed. The Irish, however, can live up to 20 years. Its coat can become quite tangled, and it sheds a lot.

You're the expert, but our Irish Setter could not have been more gentle and tolerant to little children. My brother and I put that dog through hell, and we never got so much as a snap. 40+ years down the road, and I still miss her so much

I had Irish setter for almost 7 years, I can say it that no other dog is as smart, friendly and mature like Irish setter, the only thing which can be little annoying is, Irish setter really needs cold temperature, regular exercise and walking and running, it is not easy to maintain Irish setter but I m 100% Sure with full confidence that if once can fulfill the responsibilities of Irish Setter then no other dog is as smart, intelligent and caring like Irish Setter, I don't have words to explain the amazing Beauty of an Irish, they are quite mature after 3 years but meanwhile so lovable and caring towards babies, Guys if you ever have the experience of Irish then believe me, no other dog can match with Handsome Irish in every manner... Yaaa Golden Retriever is also so smart, lovable, friendly and caring but I give 85 marks to Golden and 95 marks to Irish, cutting 5 marks coz Irish can't live alone for long really needs company.

remember thatthis is an average. you can always have a stupid irish setter since individually dogs are different from one another. that being said. we have two lovely irish setters that love to swim when its hot out. so invest in a dogproof pool if you want an irish setter in a hotter climate

Have a golden retriever / irish setter mix. 3 years old now and the best dog in the world. We have a 16 month old baby and she has practically been her babysitter from birth. So gentle and they are best friends. These dogs are goofy and rambunctious but after 2/3 years they settle down and lose their puppy ways. She walks with us everywhere off lead now no problem. They are also super clever. Understand so many words so saying the word walk can't be done anymore. Can open all doors in the house and has an unbelievable 6th sense. Loves socks. Really loyal to their master but friendly to everyone. Easy to train but also really stubborn. Needs off lead walks daily and loves the water. If you can stick with them through the puppy years and train them well they are the best dog in the world. The puppy years were the best though.

That mix is the reason my grandpa never had another dog.......she got hit on the road. It was his best friend. Said "no more dogs". Everyone knew it was because he couldn't stand loosing another one.

I've had an irish red and white setter, and a golden retriever. I love both, but the setter was definitely more stand-offish when it came to people outside her family. The golden is more social with everyone. Retriever and setters have different ways of seeing the world and different outlooks on life. I personally prefer the Retriever outlook. Everyone is your friend until proven differently vs my setter's everyone can be a friend, but they have to prove it first. Both were/are very intelligent, but i think my retrievers have had more empathy. That said, either dog is good with a family, but if your family has small (toddler or infant) children, I would suggest the retriever over the setter, but BOTH can be excellent dogs if well trained/'socialized, and both can be bad with kids if they are poorly trained/socialized.

Irish setters are more like Goldens in the sense that they love everyone. My neighbor has a golden and I have a setter. The golden will bark at you but no action. The Irish setter will try to run up to you to greet you and will be overly excited. If someone is deemed a threat then my irish setter will run behind me and growl.
