This is actually very true. Of course us finns don't neceserly realize it 'cause of how good we speak the language but a big part of the vocabulary has shortened versions. For example: kaksikymmentä = kakskyt jne. It's quite impossible to speak any language on the natibe level and I can believe you have had hard time studying finnish, but keep it up!

The problem is that Finns don't adapt to foreigners. I tried to learn and speak Finnish, but oftentimes I didn't understand things. When I told people that I don't understand and asked if they could repeat what they said (En ymmärä voitko sanoi se udestan )(or something like that, it was a few years ago)) They repeat the exact same words in the exact same speed but louder. The volume isn't the problem for us foreigners.

But why do you have to speak to foreigners like you speak to locals? +I often wonder why Finns don't get that it would help to simplify their language when talking to foreigners. It happened to me many times that I tried to speak Finnish and didn't get what the other person said (They got what I said) Then I asked them to repeat because I didn't understand and they used the exact same words in the exact same speed, but louder. You discourage people from learning the language. Especially in Western Finland here the locals speak English to each other because they have Finnish or Swedish surnames. I can communicate better in Finnish with foreigners who don't speak English than I ever could with Finnish people. And that's just on Finnish people being, well, let's say Finnish.

@@GothamClive it sounds like you've had some bad experiences, and I'm sorry that my fellow finns did this, but you're exagerating and saying things that aren't true. Finns like when people try to learn finnish, and do speak as clearly as they can if asked to. However, speaking in kirjakieli feels very ackward to many finns, so people can easily slip back into the more comfortable way of speaking, puhekieli. There's also another aspect to your problem. And that is that most finns speak english. Because you both know english equaly well, it's a better method of communicating than finnish. Therefore, when finns have official business with foreigners, they speak english to communicate better. Yes, this doesn't help you learn finnish, but that isn't the job of a cashier at S-market.

I watched a Finnish soap opera (yes, Salatut Elämät lol), and suddenly I realized how weird it sounded when all the characters spoke the general spoken language without any noticeable dialects, despite the characters' age or background. I know it's to make the characters more appealing to the audience regardless of the region they live in, but it just ends up sounding "clinical" and "bland" to everyone haha.

I had a friend in high school who had lived in England and Ireland till he was 13 since 4. He was Finnish and could speak Finnish fluently. Brother was 17 when we met and even he could not keep up with my short amped up southwest dialect. When you cut words in half and combine them into new words that you then sometimes shorten, is it still the same language.

When I was living in Belfast people tried to simplify their language and speak as close to received pronunciation as the could. People in Finland don't switch from puhukieli to kirjakieli when talking to me and they don't slow down. Even though my English is way better than my Finnish. No Irish person ever spoke to you in the local dialect, because they know you wouldn't understand that. Finnish people actively discourage people from learning their language.
