I think it is worth noting that the older Sigma does not have weather sealing while all Irix do. I shoot in all kinds of weather conditions and this is an absolute dealbreaker for me with the Sigma 20mm.

Thanks for touching on coma, as was looking exactly for that information as I'd like to get a faster wide angle lens for astrophotography. Depending on cost, it's worth considering to get and shoot stopped down a bit, though I wonder if there are other sharp wide lenses with maximum aperture of 2.8 that would be better value for money.

When I saw the test chart shots I also thought it performs a little bit better than the Sigma in terms of sharpness. I still love the "my heart skipped a beat" Art lens :-) since I only shoot with 24mp, need the af and like that it is also 1mm wider. Hopefully Sigma will release a dn lens successor which is sharper and smaller and has less coma some day. I definitly share your exitement regarding this focal length.

I would be happy if you would also test sun stars (from the real sun) in your reviews in the future. Sun stars from artificial light sometimes behave differently compared to the real sun. For example, I think of the Nikon 14-30mm f4 S in particular: lights on the Christmas tree look fantastic (see here: "DPReview TV: The great ultra-wide sunstar shootout"). But at the same settings with the real sun, the sun stars seem a bit jumpy and form less defined rays. You have to google for sample images. Furthermore, it is important that the atmosphere is free of any haze, dust, clouds, so that you get sun stars (whether beautiful or less beautiful). Of course, all sun stars can gain a boost towards beauty when the sun hangs in the dense treetop with lots of leaves or scratches another edge of an object (mountain, house wall, etc.). However, this type of test is rather less meaningful. As a landscape photographer I like to position the sun in the sky without an object scratching the sun. Okay, sometimes the sun hangs between branches etc. ;-) I would also like to point out something else: The sun stars also change with the focal length of the lens. For example, the new Nikon 24-70 f4 S has a nice sun star with defined lines at 24mm and f22, but no defined rays emerge at 35mm, 50mm and 70mm (anything above 24mm). Despite the closed aperture, these rays appear to have fanned out. I hope you understand my request Chris. Therefore, I would be happy if you consider all focal lengths with a closed aperture in your reviews and use the right sun (free atmosphere) as the light source. I've seen a lot of reviews here on KZfaq and unfortunately the sun stars are very often neglected! As a landscape photographer who wants really nice sun stars (bless the old Nikon 20mm f1.8!), it's difficult to find this info on a number of websites. I think this adds even more value to your reviews. I hope I'm not alone with my thoughts and desires and would appreciate a "thumbs up" so Chris can read this. So thanks again for everything and may God bless you!

I ran this question by at a different KZfaq channel, and having watched a couple years of Chris's videos, I am curious if any of the lens enthusiasts here have an opinion, especially since I am always pining away for lenses with wide apertures (like this Irix). The assumption in this question is an APS-C sensor, if that matters, and the work is video, but I am thinking that will not matter. The context is my learning that (supposedly) for any given lens, its max sharpness will be two stops closed down from its max aperture. Suppose sharpness is quite important to me, perhaps for the kind of work I do. And suppose that I want to shoot with a 2.8 aperture as much as possible (for depth of field reasons among others, let's say). And suppose money is not an issue. Should I trade in my 2.8 lenses for (otherwise identical) 1.4 lenses, so that I can stop them down to 2.8? As things stand, to get 2.8 I have to shoot "wide open," thus sacrificing some sharpness. Just curious.
@ZadieBear
@ZadieBear 2 жыл бұрын
If money is no object, then yes. But weight will become an issue too, especially on 1.2 lenses or the Sigma 105 1.4 lens. At one point I owned a Canon 50 1.4, which was good at 2.8 but horrible at 1.4. It did allow me to experiment with 1.4 apertures. My next 1.4 lens was the Sigma 20 Art 1.4, and I realized I needed to spend my $ on more 1.4 lenses. Now I use Sony cameras and have 4 1.4 lenses (24, 35, 50 & 85). All 4 of my 1.4 lenses are sharp wide open too, so stopping down isn't necessary anymore.

@@AR-vf7vg Indeed, AR, focus breathing issues made me finally learn to practice manual focus and trust myself (easier to do these days with tools like focus peaking). You are right that sharpness is not really a priority for me, but the supposition helped me to learn something from you and others. Thanks so much! - Dave

The irix lenses are outstanding for what you are asking. Apsc is roughly the same size as Super35, and I haven't seen any issues using them on such cameras. I mostly used the 30mm, and that reaches almost peak sharpness/contrast at T2.8, but is very good wide open at T1.5 as well. But please, buy the cine version if using it for video. With weather sealing, nd almost zero focus breathing, distortion and CA, Irix was hard to beat in it's prize bracket of cinema lenses. I sound like a salesman for them at this point, but I just have positive experiences so far.

Unfortunately, while my IRIX 11mm works fine with an adapter on my R5, it doesn't work at all on my crop sensor R7. The R7 image in the viewfinder looks very strange, and then literally locks up when the shutter is trifgered, and I had to remove the battery to clear the locked up shutter. I saw this same problem described on the B&H Photo website reviews by another R7 photographer on another IRIX lens, the 45mm, so it sounds like an issue between Canon RF mount restrictions for the newer R7. The 11mm works fine when adapted on my older R5. I still may consider this 21mm f/1.4 for my R5, especially at the bargain $449 US price now at B&H.

It is odd to see a manual focus lens at f/1.4 that is manual focus. While I can understand manual focus on a tilt/shift lens, but in such a design, skimping on auto focus is just a bad move.

@B3D_FPV
@B3D_FPV 2 жыл бұрын
Rubbish, cine lenses are evaulated via the same criterion with some additions and with 8K DCI the sharpness is tested to 35MP+, although most DPs will prefer a less clinically sharp image which is why Promist filters are still a huge deal.
@Bayonet1809
@Bayonet1809 2 жыл бұрын
@@B3D_FPV Your acknowledgment of a preference for less sharp image is one reason why cine lenses are not optimal for stills. Other reasons include: little interest in minimising coma or other image corner based aberrations, a preference for artistic flare rather than minimal flare, and the need for low focus breathing. All of these factors apply pressure on the other lens design parameters, and thus in this case cause the front element to be too big to fit regular photography filters (because matte boxes exist for cine uses) and thus also make for a sub-optimal lens for pure photography.
