These double brush design was best ever made, that's why it's so long on the market since 10 years now. They only change faceplate every some time lol I'm now testing Roomba 980 and it's so far so good as they, but even better than 870 I tested before.

I just got one for Christmas from my Girlfriend, and bless her heart she picked a winner. Especially since tech is not her strong suit. I live in a 1000 sqft dual story townhome. The main floor is 100% tile and it works as a sweeper flawlessly. It goes from front door, to back door, kitchen, downstairs half-bath and dining and living room areas without issue. Cleans under the sofa, kitchen table and coffee table. Takes about 90 minutes and done. Most of the time it simply continues until it's battery is nearly exhausted and then finds it's way home. Upstairs, is fully carpeted except for the bathroom, and the 692 does an awesome job there as well. I keep the dock downstairs so when cleaning upstairs, I simply take the roomba off the charger, bring it up stairs, and then put it in the middle of the master bedroom and let it do both bedrooms and the upstairs master bath. Because of all the carpet, the battery life is about 2/3 of that on the tile floor alone. So it only cleans for about an hour before it beeps and tells me it's out of juice. but that is more than enough to thoroughly clean both bedrooms and the bath. I simply then empty the bin, and put it on it's cradle downstairs to charge. The entire townhome is clean within 6 hours with very little intervention on my part. I totally agree with your assessment of the differences in AI between the random "adaptive" pathfinding vs "smart" pathfinding. Many people don't like the randomness because they feel that it causes areas to be missed. But as you demonstrated, especially on hard floors, these robots can and do often fling dirt into already "cleaned" areas, which with a more "intelligent" robot might not go over again. So while others might see adaptive pathfinding as a weakness, I actually find it to be a strength, and it's shortcomings in efficiency are overshadowed by it's thoroughness in cleaning. This roomba is perfect for small to medium sized homes, and with the addition of a virtual wall sensor, you can segregate even medium to large homes into manageable sections separated only by the need to recharge, and the small effort it takes to lift the robot and manually move it to the next cleaning area.

For a random navigation robot, this one really surprised me. I think it will be very interesting to see how it will do on a large floor plan. Not only how it cleans, but also how it actually takes on the large floor plan. How that random pattern will be. I have to agree that for a small place this robot is great as it really seem to clean well.

It does surprisingly well on our 2000 sq' floor. In and out of rooms. Carpet/hardwood. Takes abouts an hour

I'm gonna buy one for my small vacation condo. Only 900 sq ft. I have a more expensive one for my 1700 sq ft house and it works well. These are great.

I have owned a Roomba 560. It had the same brush rollers as this model. (Rest in peace you died a electronic malfunction death) After a while it will accumulate lots of small hairs in the brush roller but its quite good anyway to pick up hair. Especially if you have carpet or rugs where it can remove the hairs in the rolls when cleaning. I now have a Roomba 880 with the rubber rollers. Those do not accumulate much hair at all. (We only have hardwood floor) Only on the ends but that's easy enough to remove once in a while. However these are random robots so you need to keep cables , throw rugs, rugs with tassels, clothes , long curtains and also black rugs/carpets away since they will eat and/or get stuck on those. These robots are not for big floor plans since they are random. You can help this a bit with the light-houses (in light house mode, not in block mode) since the robot will split the time on each side of a light house so you can place those strategic around your floorplan. I'm amazed this model stills sells as new since similar models has been in production since 2006.

@AdamsReviews

They are both very similar..the e5 uses the same rollers as the i7...alot of people like those better but they both clean very well.Not sure..both would do great.

I robot crushes carpet, if they come out with LIDAR bot I'm in. I heard from someone who works in ID for Irobot they don't want to do LIDAR because of reliability and warranty claims as LIDARs are notorious for failures after 24 months... they are considered by Irobot to almost be a consumable

Probably true. What iRobot does with using a camera is pretty impressive. I think their map is really good.

Thank you for this review . I've been really torn about buying one, even at a $200 price point. I'm a single mom working 50 hours a week so time and money are precious. I have all hardwood floors, 3 kids and two dogs. Hair, crumbs, the occasional crushed Cherrios & such make my floors feel horrible. I'm looking forward to purchasing one. Thanks again.
