I think Aang's problem with killing is a little bit more complex than how its really presented in the show. As you guys rightfully point out, Aang has surely killed people in the past, so whats the deal with him having a problem with it now? I think ultimately Aang's issue really lies in how/why the killing comes about. Before when Aang has killed people, the killing was never directly committed as a MEANS to achieve an end, it was more of a SIDE-EFFECT in the process of achieving that end. This is an important distinction which actually has real moral implications in real life, for instance, in the trolley problem. Studies have shown that people, like Aang, are more likely to see the latter as morally acceptable and the former as morally wrong. Additionally, Aang's problem is complicated by the fact that he is the LAST airbender. Its a situation which NO other Avatar has faced, and even an airbending Avatar like Yangchen doesn't truly understand. Because Aang is literally the last of his people, every action he takes reflect NOT ONLY his personal beliefs but also serves as a reflection of the beliefs of his entire people and culture. If Yangchen chose to kill, that was fine because there were other, more spiritual airbenders who could carry on airbending principles and philosophy. Meanwhile, if Aang chooses to kill it suggests that no only is killing acceptable to Aang, but it was acceptable to airbenders in general because there is nobody to dispute/counteract Aang's actions. So its a lot tougher choice for Aang than it might seem at first glance.

Also people tend to forget that Aang is literally twelve. He's a child. One thing is doing what he can to protect his family, one thing is going into a mortal duel with the intent of kill your enemy. We can do all the philosophical speculation we want but Aang, while the Avatar, is TWELVE, of course he doesn't want to kill people, even evil ones like Ozai.

One of the best things I've discovered about the scene with Zuko and Iroh upon multiple rewatches is that it is a direct callback to episode one. In episode one Zuko complains and wakes Iroh from a nap for basically no reason. In this episode he sees Iroh asleep and waits for him to wake up despite having such enormously important things to say to each other.

At that moment for zuko, he was distraught for what he believed he betrayed his uncle, but he was also terrified of the consequences. His plea for forgiveness was also a plea for mercy, the same act he pleaded for when he faced his father. The moment Iroh grabbed him, you can still hear in his voice the disbelief in his uncles action. He wasn't just hoping for mercy, he was (deep down in his trauma) believing he was going to be punished for it.

I think Sage’s Rain said it best from “Iroh & Zuko-Light of the Fire Nation” and you should subscribe to him if you haven’t. While Zuko’s identity and character was shaped by Ursa, his values and morals are sharpened by Iroh. Iroh is the embodiment of light and kindness. Iroh is someone who will see the best in us, no matter how the rest of the world sees us, just like he did with Zuko. Zuko doesn’t have the purity or innocence of Aang or the sarcastic humor and genius of Sokka. Zuko is awkward, troubled, lost and angry. He is a person who has failed time and time again, a person who has been through trials and tribulations. Through all of his growth and had faith he could do good. It is a story that is rooted in loss and failure, but has blossomed into a story of unconditional and unwavering love. It is a story of learning and unlearning.

My favourite thing about Zuko is that his success doesn't come from him being intelligent, it comes from the pure strength of his will. It is always shown that Azula exploits him with her superior intelligence and the reason he beats her isn't because he suddenly gained more knowledge on his journey. His redemption and moral transformation is what makes him succeed which is why he is the rightful Firelord because he can be the symbol to lead the Fire Nation to their redemption.

Everyone interprets Kyoshi's advice as "Kill him." But she told him concretely: "no justice, no peace." Maybe it's because I live in a country that has abolished the death penalty, but I do not consider that bringing true justice necessarily means killing Ozai. I find it interesting that the team comes to Iroh with one idea in mind, defeat Ozai, and all go back to do something else. This shows that defeating a genocidal tyrant is not enough to stop 100 years of imperialism. It's really smart for a child's show.

Kyoshi is actually pretty against killing, it’s always interpreted the wrong way though. Mostly because people don’t know her character as well if they haven’t read the novels.. ofc a lot can change between the time the novels took place and when she dealt with other stuff but I think her morals would be the same. Fun fact, the finale as a whole was accidentally the first full episode of Avatar I ever watched (because my sister was watching it and I wanted to spend time with her), and with absolutely no context, I sobbed through most of the episode, beginning with Zuko and Iroh’s reunion. I had no idea what Zuko was asking forgiveness for, but the way Iroh immediately embraced and forgave him didn’t need context to resonate with me so strongly. I remember thinking “I don’t know what’s happening, but this is so beautiful.” Then I went back and watched the series from the beginning and cried even more.

Looking back on what the lion turtle says since I watched Legend of Korra, I realize the lion turtle is speaking about Raava and Vatuu. Even when he says to Aang before leaving, "wait for him, he will come." the "him" that the lion turtle is talking about is Vatuu. That's essentially what the fight between Aang and Ozai was. A battle between good and evil. A battle between Raava and Vatuu.

If Aang was in a world where air nomads still live, then yes he could kill Ozai . There is no culture aside from styles of airbending that is specific to air nomads. The air acolytes follow the culture and philosophy established in the air temples, which you're arguing Aang is singularly upholding. That is untrue. At best, he's singular upholding the art of airbending. That's all. He doesn't have a monopoly on the culture or philosophy.

@@IBBMS It is incredibly ignorant to assume that the air acolytes are held to the standard of the air nomads. The air nomads possess a spirituality affect that can’t be seen in the acolytes. This is because airbending is highly connected to the spirit world. This is why even after the acolytes, Aang was considered the last air nomad. Their culture stems partially from their bending, not just their beliefs. Aang is the last descendent of the air nomads as in he possesses the last airbending genes. So yes, he does own a monopoly on the people. You can follow the lifestyle but in this case, air nomad is something you are born with.

Watching Zuko reunite with Iroh was such a pure moment. This is twice Zuko upset a father figure and the last time he did ended up with his face being burned. Avatar Yangchen’s wisdom is the most interesting to me. She believes, as Aang does, that all life is sacred and that the taking of life is morally wrong. Yet she still counsels him that ending Ozai’s is necessary for the world to balance itself. Despite popular opinion, a wrong can make a right. Being bound to one set of morals and ethics limits and constraints your actions, and becomes just another weapon to be used against you.

25:00 After watching Legend of Korra and learning the origin of the Avatar, that line takes a whole new meaning. This lion turtle is ancient and has been alive since way before the era of the Avatar. That means the lion turtle knows about Raava and Vatuu at this point. So when he says "Wait for him, he will come" he could be referring not just to Ozai but to Vatuu. Since that is the nature of the two, it's to battle one another to decide the fate of the world. Aang vs Ozai is yet another battle between good and evil, and thus another battle between Raava and Vatuu.

Kuruk's advice is very clear. He cautions that the Avatar should be proactive, not passive. If he doesn't step up and do what it takes, it will result in disaster.
