It’s a natural thing when two people from the country side come into contact. They challenge each other to a game of “who’s more country” and regardless of the outcome more often than not it ends with “my people!”

My family has a farm out in the middle of nowhere, it’s where my great grandparents gave birth to and raised my grandmother and her siblings. When we recently started cleaning it and making it livable again we found trash from decades ago. It’s so far from anywhere that it’s not reasonable to haul your trash away you either burn your trash or it it won’t burn so it just stays in a pile.

I lived deep in the country but also in town. By that I mean I lived in a town that was so small you could reasonably walk from one end to the other in an hour and our town was divided by a highway running straight through the middle. Literally everything we could possibly need was smashed into that area and everything outside of that town was miles and miles of woods and farmland, the closest town in almost any direction was an hour drive. If you wanted to go somewhere you had to plan your day around it.

@@Broomer52 that is pretty far. Although i did have a professor who would commute 2 hours from home to work daily. Don’t know how she did it. If traffic is bad, it can easily double her commute to 4 hours one way. Half hour to an hour by car i would say is reasonable enough. But it less about stuff being too far and more about getting stuck in traffic where i’m at.

@@zgamer200 oh, you went quite hard as to say "I dont think i could ever call either of them proper idols" so i thought it was your opinion, not what a japan traditionalists opinion. If the flag for idolness is the Seiso aspect, as traditionally defined, then no one is. Subaru's behaviour, language, and interactions aren't (traditional) Seiso at all. Dont get me wrong, i love Subaru, its my all time favourite, but trashing on all the effort Marine has put on her idol-esque activities because of a heavily outdated and backward concept as "Seiso" reeks of injustice.

Pretty sure the deliveries effectively go until a bit after stores/restaurants close in the area. So if McDonald's is open until 2am, for example, they'd deliver until about 3am. And then McD's opens again at like 6am... so there's only like 3 hours a day they don't deliver. Really depends on the area, though. With Covid, our local McD's might not even be open past like 10 or 11pm now. It eventually got to 24 hours just a few years ago, I think... and now it's back to not 24h.

@@dankpepe2110 True? Although, with how my parents are, we rarely go to said convenience store. We do groceries in bulk once a week, either from the grocery store or the wet market or both depending on how much budget we have and other factors. One reason we usually don't go to the convenience store is that it's far away. It's quite close for people who are used to long journeys, but not us. Plus, it can use up a lot of gas going back and forth, and even if we commute that's still a lot of money given how high gas prices are here (and by extension, fare/commute fees).

It could be the difference in service as well. I mean, Japan is famous for its customer service after all so I won’t be surprised if people actually addicted in deliveries because it’s THAT convenient

The thing is, if you're from a big enough city all the services are so close and convenient that there's no reason to order stuff. (say. a few minutes on foot) Ordering food and so on is useful if you're in the "middle" zone, where your shopping area is a bit farther away so it's a drag to go there, but not so far away that it feels crazy to order a pizza delivered to your home. The fact is that delivery places usually have an "area of service", and if you live outside that they might either charge extra or not deliver at all.

Depending on your area, you can also have people steal your packages. So on date of arrival i try to be home and pay attention to when it’s dropped off. 4 out of 5 times they just leave package by door and don’t bother knocking. When they do knock, it often more of a single light tap to the door. Ordered food can be expensive and lately i haven’t really trust amazon with giving proper items. Can’t even reliably order same thing again without it changing into different item under same name.

My country side is a mix of rural and urban feels. 10mins going to the market via car and we also pick our own vegetables from our yard from time to time. We also raise chickens and turkey. At the same time food delivery exist and malls are available to some extent.

Home-grown veggies are definitely a perk of rural living. As a kid, every dinner would always be made with something my mom grew; Cucumber, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, squash... all sorts of goodies. It's one of the things I miss a lot now that I live in a city.

Reminds me of when I was living in Rural Mexico. It was a fairly populated small city. Cobblestone roads, the occasional park, the banks were in the City Square but Convenience stores and local stores were dotted everywhere. Even up in the Mountainside neighborhoods. Then when I move back to the US the whiplash of maybe having like 1 or 2 Liquor stores that are NOT a short walk away or hell, maybe not even HAVING a store nearby at all within walking distance meant that I’d have to go out of my way to walk the extra distance to get what would normally take me like 10 minutes in Mexico

My parents told me about their childhood in the Mexican countryside. My mother was a rural small town girl and my father was from what would be the backroads of a rural area.

We actually had some sort of supermarket in our village At first, it had a pretty small sortiment and eventually closed Also there was a kiosk selling buns in the morning and a butcher, but we never bought from the butcher, I think 15 minutes with the car to the next "real" supermarket sounds accurate though And the train would come every hour, *two villages over* XD My dad would often walk that far with me when he came to pick me up from my mom's place And one time i got in a fight with my mom years later I walked on my own I think my mom called my father and he called me while I was walking, she apparently was mad, but he wasn't :P
