I can't imagine what it would be like in that way, because at least guys get facial hair. Having someone at their workplace come up to you in a friendly manner and have to feel like you need to begin the conversation with "I'm an adult" would be a pain.

Seems like a collective mother behavior. I have seen a group of mothers who all missed their children will treat any kids around the age of the children in a similar matter as they do to their kids. Mothers who still have their children with them don't express such behavior that often. Maybe its just an amplification of mother instinct when they are grouped together.

It's not very healthy. There are actually ways to talk to a child with moderate respect without positing them like a dependent, and that treatment is the ONLY way they actually grow up and learn to represent a family to the outside society, let alone represent themselves, which every adult needs to have built the confidence for. It's veiled in kindness but this is still "let me talk to the manager" mindset, immature on their own part. Gossip is also part of it, since when you don't base yourself in confidence you need to huddle together like this and seek group validation.
