Blaze Bayley:Vocals
Steve Harris:Bass
Janick Gers:Guitar
Dave Murray:Guitar
Nicko McBrain:Drums
[Lyrics]
You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand there's no turning back
The bugle sounds and the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
As I plunge on into certain death
Ooooooooh! Ooooooooh!
The horse he sweats with fear we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race toward the human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall
We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And the Russians fire another round
We get so near yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day
Ooooooooh! Ooooooooh!
We get so close near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds take my horse below
And as I lay there gazing at the sky
My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone
Without a tear I draw my parting groan
Ooooooooh! Ooooooooh!
............................................
'The Trooper' is a song from Iron Maiden's album ''Piece of Mind'',released in 1983.
''Based on the Crimean war with the British against the Russians. The opening is meant to try and recreate the galloping horses in the charge of the light brigade. It's an atmospheric song. ''(Steve Harris)
'''The Trooper' is perhaps the most famous and recognisable of Maiden's songs, along with 'Run To The Hills'. It describes a British cavalry charge against the Russian army during the Crimean War (18531856) at Balaclava on 25th October 1854. This action was a major blunder of the Crimean War, useless bloodsheds being a theme that Iron Maiden approached again with the song 'Paschendale' on the 2003 Dance Of Death album. Thin Lizzy's 1976 song 'Massacre', that was covered by Maiden on their 1988 single Can I Play With Madness, was also inspired by this battle.
The Charge of the Light Brigade was led by Lord Cardigan and his light cavalry. The Russians had taken outposts and redoubts heavily-armed, well-defended, strategic positions and had began to make off with the naval guns and ammunition which had been used in these redoubts previously occupied by the Turks (then allied of the British). The loss of guns was a clear sign of defeat which Lord Raglan, then in charge of the sector, could not allow. When he saw what the Russians were doing, he ordered that the guns should be retaken. However, the order was very vague and hastily scribbled, not mentioning which guns, or where they were. Although Raglan on the heights and having an overview of the area thought it was obvious, the cavalry in the valley could not see the Russians with the British naval guns because they were over the top of the ridge. Consequently the cavalry was baffled: the only guns they could see were those before Sebastopol, two miles away, where there were gun emplacements down both sides of the valley and across the end.
The Trooper single This charge, symbol of the bravery of men and of the mindlessness of some officers, was immortalised by Lord Tennyson's (18091892) poem The Charge Of The Light Brigade (first published on 9th December, 1854 and reprinted in 1855). This poem was one of the most popular of the Victorian period and one critic of the time said: "The poem has become almost too popular for discussion; it is the one stirring, galloping piece of energy which all shades of mind and sympathy seem to admire alike." The same comment is also valid for the Iron Maiden song, which is a perfect example of Harris' riff-based style of music. The power and emotion of this song make it an all-time classic, and one of the best Maiden songs ever. ''
'Piece of Mind' is the fourth studio album by British heavy metal band Iron Maiden. It was originally released in 1983 on EMI, and on Capitol in the US. It was the first album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain, who had recently left the Paris-based band Trust.
In 1989, Steve Harris announced that Piece Of Mind was the 'best studio album' Iron Maiden had recorded. It is also the first album to feature their mascot, Eddie, full bodied.

The fact that Steve, as a real leader, stood next to his musician and simply personified protection and calmness with his figure speaks of what kind of person he is. And Blaze with his furious look, if this spitting animal had come across him on the street, he would have smashed everything for him

Not in the way Bruce Dickinson sings. It’s just a feel and a vibe. It’s not about precision or technicality. That’s something composers and virtuosos do not understand hence why really none make it. Besides rush? LOL. Most of these guys learn off their inspirations and by playing their instrument til it’s a part of them. They don’t read music and that my dear is what makes Bruce’s singing ONE OF A KIND

Think was because Steve bass and the overall Maiden sound. Many bands from Sabbath to Motley and beyond have been playing a whole step down, but some of those bands had just one guitar, so with more than one guitar and altering the tuning, bass comes somewhat lost/diluted in the mix, something Steve wouldn't allow in HIS band🤷‍♂️😒

@alecolon4601 Жыл бұрын
@@thedawnoftheblackhearts2745 He is not a good singer? There's even a song released in Bruce Dickinson era that, during this period, Blaze sang it better than Dickinson: Afraid To Shoot Strangers. Droping the tune would've been an excellent resolution because Blaze was an amazing singer and had a strong voice, but he didn't have the technique to sing very very high like Bruce. It was a matter of vocal technique, Blaze is a baritone and before Iron Maiden, he was singing in Wolsfbane in his own style with his own vocal configurations. Nowadays he actually developed the real technique and he could sing almost any Maiden song very well. But in that time, the Iron Maiden offer was something that he didn't expect it before, so when the offer came, he just had to accept cause he couldn't waste a once in a life chance like this. He just didn't have the time. So, if they droped the tune, he would've been able to reach those high notes more near to his baritone range, and that would've saved the gigs and the tours.

As a fan and writter of the upcoming book about Blaze era in Maiden, I can confirm that Arry was aware of his weakneses but he was afraid of the reaction of the fans! He Said that Maiden fans knows Maiden Sound and If they tuned down, everything would've been even worse..a big mistake.

And I belive things would've been completely different with the different aproach.. Better setlist choice and by that I mean more Di'Anno material with the couple of less acrobatic Bruces stuff as a support Like Afraid to Shoot Strangers,Fear of the Dark, Heaven Can Wait, Powerslave and Still Life would've solved everything, Blaze would've been allowed to sing Within his natural range and there is no question, although it would've been Weird at first without classics Like Hallowed or The Trooper Blaze would've been accepted much better by the fans! :)

Another possible suggestion for the crowd being pissed off was because this was Maiden's first visit to Chile, and that Bruce wasn't singing for the show. You must remember people that Maiden tried to visit Chile back in '92 when Bruce was still in the band, but the Catholic Church wouldn't allow it, and fans didn't get what they wanted. Now here's Maiden in '96, and people are pissed that it's not Bruce.

Blaze had the impossible job, not just in vocal range but even in dealing with idiots in the crowd like this. Bruce would have simply just dealt with this situation in seconds. But this one idiot encouraged Steve to stand right next to his singer (loyally) and totally railroaded the song. In the nicest possible way (I love maiden and Blaze) but as an armchair pundit years later, this video really demonstrates all of the variables that maiden hadn’t considered when choosing Blaze. Much love to Blaze though, I don’t know if anybody else who could have done so well with the deck of cards he was handed. And to this day, he carries himself as a great human being. Respect doesn’t even describe the admiration that I have for Blaze and his character, and talent. And unsung true hero.
