As someone who enjoys to write cover songs myself (Though I haven't published them anywhere, having zero vocal skills) I usually try to match the melody perfectly, while also retaining as much of the same lyrics as possible. Yes, it can be a struggle. Yes, some words and phrases need to be changed, but the overall meaning of the song is the same, and the lyrics usually match by about 70-80%.
