I've been a Maiden fan for quite a while but for some reason over the last few months this song has captured for me the human condition of the last several years and it seems the song is even more profound. The lyrics, the vocals, the musicianship, all of it is amazing!

SoM is an absolute gem: my favorite song on SiT. I really wish they would resurrect it and play it live. Actually, I know I’m not alone in wishing they would play the entire album, live. Those guitar parts between both Adrian and Dave are freaking beautiful on their own. All together, they are just stunning. The song is just absolute perfection!

@@LicksOfTheBeast I think I read that the album just has a really big, full sound, with keyboards, that they don't think they can replicate well live. (I read it online, of course, so grain of salt.) I wish they'd do it anyway. Just think what they could do with three guitars!
@LicksOfTheBeast
@LicksOfTheBeast 2 жыл бұрын
@@emilyinoregon6967 That album does have a very unique sound but so does Seventh Son and they pulled that off phenomenally well on the Maiden England tour (some songs sounded maybe even better than the original tour!) I think the bigger problem is that SIT is made up of very particular sounding songs that don't blend very well with most of the other material - especially not on a big stage. I think the pacing would clash the most... Also, I don't know how Bruce would pull off that material live nowadays as it's all belting with very little breathing... It was hard enough for him to do in '86 and as awesome as he is today, I doubt he'd pull it off. Then again... Bruce is one of those people that decides they're gonna do something and they do it so you never know with that guy 😂
@tomdurkin5149
@tomdurkin5149 2 жыл бұрын
I think Rod got a little flak for not recording and putting out a live video release of that tour didn't he? 😂 I remember Bruce was really sick too on some of those shows and couldn't sing but they went ahead and didn't cancel. Such a shame they didn't put out an official live release of that tour. I actually went to the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland back in 2013 and they had Bruce's leather jacket there with the light up tubing and the pumping heart. Naturally I got a photo taken next to it and that's as close as I'm likely to get to meeting Bruce and experiencing the SIT tour up close and personal 😆

This is a great example of how many changes you can fit into a five minute track yet keep it consistent and flowing. The listener is taken on a fantastic journey of melody and metal. I realise that this is an adrian track but Steve should go back and listen to some of these and realise that, just because you come up with a great piece of music you don't have to repeat it eight times within a track to make the most of it. Sometimes it's best to surprise the listener, keep it tighter and let them want to go back and listen to the track eight times instead to capture everything they may have missed.

It's near impossible to come up with the words to convey how timeless (no pun intended) and ethereal this track is, there is none other like it. Adrian's solo on it is elegant and oceans deeper than just about all the shred leads I've ever heard in my entire life. His very soul is etched into that note choice and phrasing on this one. All the right tensions and climax were hit.

Well yes, the majestic, ever-green, forever-beautiful Somewhere in Time. This album always has something to offer. Sea of Madness is genius work, wonder how someone can not like it. The riff, the solo, the chorus, vocals, drums, base and everything is just the way it should be. Everything is so right. Sounds lost, dreamy, sad, stormy, calm, melancholic, other-worldly. It really does, doesn't it? You can listen to somewhere in time casually and just Rick out or really dive in and let yourself be transported to an entirely different world. It's a very unique album and Sea Off Madness is probably the song that encompasses all of the album's great elements 😊
@FatemeKhodayari

@@LicksOfTheBeast Exactly! It just pulls the listener in. It's filled with nuances, different even conflicting moods and colours. Wished the band hadn't ignored this album this much when it comes to setlists. IMO not only Maiden but many other subgenres owe a lot to this album. I mean this is such a huge turning point for Maiden (and I'm not really talking about the synth) that we can still see the effects. I believe without SIT the modern (?) Maiden either would not exist or would exist in a very different way.
@LicksOfTheBeast
@LicksOfTheBeast 2 жыл бұрын
@@FatemeKhodayari it's definitely an important transition album in the same sense as Piece of Mind and X Factor. I'm sure a lot of power metal bands were influenced by that album and yeah it really should be revisited more thoroughly. I know the sound is very particular and the songs are probably a bit challenging for Bruce to sing nowadays but I agree it's definitely an overlooked album.

Out of all the Iron Maiden songs ive learnt i would still consider this one the hardest to nail down, i still cant play the solo 100% and when learning that main riff, i had to go through tabs with some weird ass phrasing and note placements in the completely wrong positions on the neck. Infact your 2 videos helped me a lot when it came to understanding what they are playing. Somewhere in Time is one of my favourite Maiden albums and idk why it gets swept under the rug by a lot of people. Ive always preferred it over Seventh Son but i know thats an unpopular opinion.

@@stevenpitcher5585 I like Deja Vu. That main riff is such a good hook, it's a shame the song doesn't have a more defined solo. My Maiden opinion would probably get me shot lol. I really don't like Peice of Mind. The only songs I can dig off it are the Trooper and Flight of Icarus (mainly for the opening lik of Adrian's solo) The rest of the album is pretty mundane to me. And I can totally see why after Powerslave, the band pushed past their creative boundaries to make SiT as I feel Powerslave really opened the eyes for what they can write.

So when I first got into Maiden I only really listened to the post reunion stuff and anything I could grab off Limewire back in the day (got into maiden around 2004). I really neglected the earlier stuff and the only song from SiT I had heard was Wasted Years as it was popular, and being shared a lot on downloading sites. Eventually I bit the bullet and listened to al lathe albums, back to back, in order to find out everything I had missed out on. Sea of Madness was the first song title I came across that I didn’t recognise. It absolutely blew me away! Amazing standout track from what became probably my favourite Iron Maiden album from the golden era. The solo and middle section after the solo really stuck out, and the song will always be one of my favourites.

For a band as influential as they are and especially considering the kind of albums and AUTHENTIC live performances they are still able to deliver, I think this band needs to be officially recognized as one of the true greats of heavy rock. Also because this will help make their music available to younger and future generations as well. Ok I'm done ranting now 😁

Even Wasted Years was a lucky card, because at first it was just a annonymous demo that Adrian had,,, until Steve heard it! Yeah I think this is where Adrian started to bring in more varied influences and a more nuanced writing style which really added some more variation in the overall pacing and feel to Maiden's albums. 😊

SIT is not my fav Maiden album but it is one I do really like and IMO this is the album where I personally think their song writing went up a gear. Obviously they’d written many amazing songs up to this point but I think the songs on this album are just so well crafted. Adrian was a key part of this.

Absolute powerhouse of a song, smack-bang between fantasy driven power rock and '80s metal. It's really interesting to me that Adrian and Phil Collen have history before Ade went to Maiden and Collen went to Def Leppard. Adrian's input and output on this album shows their similarities in taste, style and tone. That might be why Adrian didn't write solo for Maiden again after that, it might be why he left to do his own rock projects four years later - wanting to take the musical direction that Maiden didn't want to take. Somewhere in Time is a very confident and direct album considering that it was very experimental for them, though, which makes it surprising that they don't rate it as highly as others.

That is an interesting fact that not always is brought out to light. Both, Adrian and Phil, were born on Hackney, if am not mistaken. Also, both bands get along quite well, I think.

Actually, I think that besides “Wasted Years” and “Heaven Can Wait” they haven’t been playing the other songs from this album, which you correctly put it, it is a shame. This entire album is a masterpiece. The same goes for the Seventh Son of Seventh Son album. I love these both albums so much

Excellent video, Nico! I'm so glad to see this song get some love. This standout song is what makes Somewhere In Time one of my favorite albums. I would say this is my second favorite on the album after Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner. I wish I knew why they quit playing this song live. It's such a gem and a shame they don't put this song in their live rotation. I get it, they have so many songs to choose from, but this one is really one of the best they ever produced IMO. Keep it up, Nico!

Really cool! Another one of those whole new appreciation for a song videos for me this one. What's funny about this song is, the very first time I heard Bruce's Trumpets Of Jericho the fade out towards the end where he's singing the "Still the walls remain" line reminded me a lot of the ending of this song where he keeps singing "of madness". I still stand by that and I've never noticed anyone else mention this. It's subtle, but the similarity in delivery is there for sure. I love little things like that. Great video man I'll have to try learn this one!

@@LicksOfTheBeast this is great! You're literally the only other person I've spoken to who's agreed with me. I love how you pointed out Bruce's delivery is literally a pentatonic run down. Simple but effective. I guess there's a good reason it's the very first scale most of us guitarists learn 😂 I love the way Bruce fades that one out on the Scream For Me Brazil album. Hoping to see you delve into some of his solo stuff at some point man 🤞
