Yeah, and the most unbelievable thing is he has gotten even better over the years. Everyone else gets worse. Ozzy sounds like shit now, and not to say anything bad about Dio, r.i.p. but he was not that good live in his later years. But Bruce has just improved. It's just amazing. He's the best ever hands down

So rare to see a song that TRULY pushes Bruce to his limits. He stood eyes closed in a power stance the entire 8 minutes and fucking destroyed it! My respect for Maiden lies in not only their talent but the fact that they continue to push themselves when they don't have to. As a fan I've never felt cheated by Maiden. Absolutely incredible song!

You can tell how difficult this song is for Bruce. He never leaves his power stance or opens his eyes. That being said, he crushes it better than the studio version. He has nothing to prove and neither does the band, but still in their 50’s and now 60’s they still perform their most difficult songs flawlessly. This band is on another stratosphere and we are lucky to have them. Up the irons!

I'd rate When the Wild Wind Blows a perfect 10/10, The Talisman 9/10 or 9.5/10, and Starblind 7.5/10 or 8/10. When the Wild Wind Blows is certainly the best, followed by The Talisman. As for the third spot, I'm not sure if I would choose Starblind, as El Dorado and Mother of Mercy are also really good.

IneedFran Sometimes Bruce has a sore throat, or a cold. Or he's just tired. And he doesn't sound the way he usually do. But, when he is healty and not tired, he just rocks. Maiden is strong in all points. Not just Bruce, but all other members. In studio versions, everything is surgicaly precise. And somehow sterile, to certain extent. But, in live versions, when they start playing, passionally and with love, then you hear and see magic. I prefer live version of The Mercenary, for instance. Much better than studio. Also, Wasting love, Fear of the dark, Blood brothers, Sign of the cross, The Clansman, Wicker man... You name it. They just love music and heavy metal and give all they have on stage. That's why I love them. Cheers!

+RyanThompsonGuitarist you don't know if he had any lessons or not. I've heard he was trained to sing opera which helped him alot in his breathe control and security in higher notes. He probably started of as a very talented man, but over the years, with so much gigs and concerts, there is a tiny possibility that he managed to keep his voice in shape without anyone showing him how. When you think of Live after death tour, it was, perhaps, the most difficult tour for him and his voice which can be heard on some of the tapes, but after that, the voice had to be retracted, taken care of and oiled up again for the next stages. It is not shame to took lessons. I think, for someone that holds up milions of fans, that it's a shame not to take care of your voice and being able to entertain for many years after.

I think the song "The Chase" with Dio and Tate has greater complexity and more rhythmic intensity, especially Dio's vocals, which manages to reach the lowest notes with greater depth and hitting several D5s in a legato sequence while maintaining a long phrasing. , and the song is louder overall, I think Tate himself talked about this in an interview about the difficulty of singing the high note progressions of that song, so much so that no one has even done a decent cover on the same level as that performance.

@@luamoliveira3467 I don’t agree at all. That song doesn’t require nearly as much stamina or range as The Talisman. I’m not saying Dio isn’t as good as Bruce, or that Dio couldn’t sing The Talisman, but I fail to see how The Chase is one of Dios better vocal performances. Now if you said Stargazer I’d have had a hard time arguing against that.
@luamoliveira3467
@luamoliveira3467 4 ай бұрын
@@moderndayheretic I understand you but The Chase does depend on a lot of resistance, especially because many metal singers cannot maintain the stability of their phrasing as a good legato sequence with the same ease and are constantly stabbing their phrasing, especially when they are singing intensely like this one music, the sequence of words with those D5 that he sustains without breaking the phrasing and with that fabulous control in full chest voice, is a challenge and the glottal effort can be greater to sing in this region and even the level of muscular fatigue is bigger, precisely because the majority will sing this song in the oropharyngeal region within a strong balanced mix with head predominance, with that same subglottic head voice pressure as a natural subterfuge to sustain the notes and which makes it easier as Bruce started clearly to do after the age of 50 with some more operatic techniques, I see this all the time when these people are trying to do a decent cover of Dio's songs, when it doesn't sound too forced, they usually sound screamed or shrill with a certain rhythmic intensity in the progression of higher notes and does not have the same naturalness and the larynx completely free of muscular tension as Dio performs in his performances; the only difference is that the percussion in the song "The Talisman" is longer in general and the impression will really be as you said, more logically that Ronnie has more difficult performances than in "The Chase"; And I can mention both Stargazer as an example, as well as his live performances of Mistreated in Chicago 1978 or Heaven and Hell and Stand up the shout in Manchester 1983; I think that when you try to sing Dio or Jussi Bijörling at the Opera, it is one of the most difficult tasks in my opinion. As an example, I remember that end of Ronnie's show in Belgium in 2000, where Dio and Bruce Dickinson in those performances of Rainbow in the dark and Long live rock in roll perform together, Bruce didn't adapt perfectly to those songs at that moment in the show, and Right away I realized the difficulties he was having in maintaining the stability of his voice, and so he chose to try a higher harmony than Dio's voice and some improvisations, which didn't really work in my opinion, as he maintained a third voice at certain times but it sounded too shrill, the larynx was too high and he released a certain amount of air from his throat which made him lose some natural control of his voice; maiden fans said that the song was made for Ronnie's original tone and noticed that he was having difficulties, he was great but it was obvious that it was not an easy song to sing, as it required many long legato sequences in very high regions acute.

@@moderndayheretic It is one of Bruce's most difficult performances, I think there is any similarity technically between him and Ronnie but them are diferent, he is one of the best vocalists and with a great range as we know, excellent consistency live and with a great command of full belting in voice mixed chest voice (especially at his peak, where he used more chest voice when he was young), Bruce has a very characteristic vibrato, very precise and with a very operatic aesthetic and he always maintained excellent control over his trebles and just like him he also has excellent technique in general; Regarding Ronnie, he was an absolutely virtuoso singer without a doubt and that's why he is being so praised by great singing teachers out there and even operatic singing teachers like Elizabeth Zharoff, Beth Roars and Zach Ansley for example, who They have even stated a few times that he would be in their Top 3 of the best singers of all time along with Pavarotti and Caruso (even though there is that resistance on their part with Heavy Metal singers, Bruce is also highly praised, as is Halford himself), because Dio has an extremely natural way of singing, practically effortless throughout his vocal range and without any noticeable facial and throat muscle tension over years of his professional career (I note that with the exception of some opera singers, many singers that I hear live, have some necessary muscular tension and that is something normal, but Dio had no tension at all and this influences a type of sustainability and a very great vocal consistency and stability over the years) he is quite technically proficient( Perhaps he is the best voice manipulator I have ever heard and one of the rare singers with total command of his vocal instrument, you can tell by the way he very easily manipulates intonation to create that entire fabulous spectrum of varied vocal color effects in his performances and this allowed Dio to create many different melodic designs in a single song in each show); As Ken Tamplin and Zach Ansley themselves had already mentioned, Dio managed to create great resistance and a very high level of glottal compression through the perfect muscular domain of the modern open throat technique and in a very advanced way (a structural technique that found within the appogio in Bel Canto), his diaphragmatic support was fantastic and he managed to develop a lot of motor strength, a very solid muscular structure of his vocal mechanism with years of practice, so you realize that through this process, Dio was able to sing most of of time with a full chest voice in a very controlled and natural way( we know the enormous difficulty in singing with a full chest voice in a natural way and especially with the frequent use of harmonic distortion, you could see how he could hit those vowels completely open ones in many moments and as the texture of his resonance did not change as we see in a mixed voice), but he sounded quite relaxed live despite the risks that this could cause in terms of muscular friction in the long term, because it also depends in part on genetic mechanics of the singer and also of the solid muscular structure that is very well developed to be able to sing at that rhythmic intensity throughout an entire performance without showing signs of muscular fatigue, and in this context Ken Tamplin has already stated why many cannot emulate with any perfection the vocals of Dio singing his songs and because many of them sound too strident, because in addition to all this context regarding the extreme mastery he had of the mechanism, Dio also used a lot of glottic compression and a lot of diaphragmatic support to maintain his stability on those performances.

An incredible performance by, all of maiden obviously, but Bruce in particular. He plants himself to the stage and gives every single ounce of what he can in this song and its so rare to see a song stop him in his tracks like that. I remember seeing them in Sheffield, UK, on this tour and he blew me away with this song. And he did an entire tour singing it. Most people would struggle singing the first high pitched verse but he knocks the song out of the park show after show. What an incredible singer

Bruce is one of a kind, most of his singing is in full voice as opposed to falsetto (most metal singers use falsetto to hit higher notes), to be able to employ a range like his in full voice as often as he does requires not only talent but excellent physical condition as well.
@j_freed

I believe he uses a mixed head voice in a lot of the higher passages. He has quite powerful 'belt muscle' (diaphragm) control in the chest voice, where 'full voice' originates but the smooth blending of chest / head voice keeps it strong and full-sounding as he moves up. Bruce's singing has always been one of the most fascinating things to me..
