30:56 Chris Hemsworth is great at comedy too, but the type of comedy in Iron Man, Spider-Man, Ant Man, Deadpool or even Captain America doesn't work in Thor. That's why Love and Thunder basically tanked.

0:55..What makes Capttain America Winter Soldier so good is that it was just as much a political thriller as an action movie, totally agree with ya. But Iron Man's easily in the top 10 of Marvel's movies....Downey Jr was the perfect guy to play Stark- His real-life personality was as close as you could get! 11:14-The bulky gray suit was used for the 1st 4 issues of I.M,. T hey changed it to gold in #5, then switched to the red-and -gold look we all know today in issue 7.

I agree with you guys that "grounded" is good. IMO, they've been going far too "cosmic" lately. You don't need to keep making everything bigger and bigger in order to tell a compelling story.

Hey gang, appreciated your thoughts on this. One of the things the MCU did right through Endgame is that they didn't make superhero movies. They made character and story driven films with a superhero element. Captain America is a WW2 film with an added superhero element. Winter Soldier is a 70's spy thriller. And so on. You care about the people and what's going on with them, the superhero element is a bonus and not the focus. This was a redemption story. When Stan Lee created the character, he took it as a challenge to make an unlikable character likable. Tony is a narcissistic, womanizing, selfish, arrogant jerk faced with the reality of who he has become and the harm that created and changes.
@Souledex
@Souledex Жыл бұрын
And the most important element of his unlikableness was he was literally a Warprofiteering Iron Monger (Weapons seller - That's Obadiah's villain name for a good reason) during the Vietnam war. In his original origin all that stuff that happened in Afghanistan happened in Vietnam.

Hey, Michelle and Natalie! Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! "Iron Man" is the kick-off to a spectacular cinematic journey that altered the industry paradigm. The MCU is a series of 20+ interrelated films culminating in a huge 2-part movie event! The movies are all based on Marvel Comics characters who were co-created beginning in 1961 by editor/writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. Unlike other comic universes, the Marvel Universe is set in our world with many of the principals residing in New York City. What is distinctive about the Marvel pantheon is that the characters all have feet of clay; they struggle to measure up to the burden of power. Stan, Jack and artist Don Heck introduced Iron Man in 1963 in the anthology title "Tales of Suspense" expressly modeling the character on Howard Hughes and deliberately going against the anti-establishment grain of the '60's by making him a capitalist arms dealer. Insulated by wealth and ego, the epiphany he experiences and the life-threatening wound he incurs as a result of his captivity made him vulnerable and relatable to a readership predisposed to mistrusting a quintessential captain of industry. Moreover, Tony, in the comics, is also humanized by being an inveterate alcoholic which is barely alluded to in the films. The trick worked and the dichotomy hooked readers. Reframing his captors from Vietnamese Communist guerrillas in the comics to Afghan Islamicist mujahideen, the first Iron Man film adapts Tony's origin and the "Iron Monger" story arc. Iron Man was a second tier Marvel character known famously for his extravagant wealth and his endless struggle with alcoholism. Jon Favreau was an indie writer/director with one mainstream comedy hit, "Elf", under his belt. Robert Downey, Jr. was a respected former Brat Packer whose bankable days were behind him and who was then known more for drug addiction, womanizing and a motor mouth. This film should not have worked. After an aborted attempt at a shared universe with the Hulk in 2003 directed by serious auteur Ang Lee, Marvel threw the dice with Tony Stark and improbably won! It was kismet. Very rarely does an actor so ideally match a role. Downey, Jr. was BORN to play Tony Stark. His arc in the MCU is one of the best character developments I've ever seen in cinema. Remember Yinsen's last words, "Don't waste your life.", because Stark never forgets them. The cast is excellent. To support RDJ, Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges was brought aboard as Obadiah Stane setting a precedent of enlisting top-tier talent for MCU films. Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, Terrence Howard as Lt. Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Paul Bettany as disembodied JARVIS and director Jon Favreau himself as Harold 'Happy' Hogan round out the Stark stable. Shaun Toub is affecting as Stark's savior Yinsen and Faran Tahir exudes menace as Ten Rings terrorist Raza. Unflappable Clark Gregg introduces SHIELD as Agent Phil Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson makes his first appearance as Director Nick Fury. Leslie Bibb has a bit part as ambitious journalist Christine Everhart as does Tim Guinee as USAF Major Allen. Blink and you'll miss Nazanin Boniadi of "Homeland" and "The Rings of Power" as a television news correspondent reporting from Gulmira and veteran character actor Bill Smitrovich as a General attending Stark's Jericho demonstration. Former child actor Peter Billingsley from the holiday classic "A Christmas Story" plays the technician chewed out by Stane for being unable to miniaturize the arc reactor. TRIVIA: 1. As a tribute to Howard Hughes, who served as a template for both Howard and Tony Stark, production was based in the former Hughes Company soundstages in Playa Vista. Tony's garage/lab is the area where Hughes assembled the H-4 Hercules airplane aka 'The Spruce Goose'. 2. The original script was discarded right before production began so each day's scenes were improvisationally workshopped between the cast, director and producers just prior to shooting resulting in an indie sensibility which Jeff Bridges has affectionately referred to as "a $200 million student film!" EASTER EGGS: 1. The Ten Rings terrorist organization refers to the ten alien rings worn by Stark's traditional comic book nemesis, The Mandarin. 2. Raza, leader of the terror cell, is named after but bears no resemblance to a cyborg space pirate from the comics who is part of a crew of interstellar corsairs and X-Men allies known as the Starjammers. 3. JARVIS is an acronym for 'Just A Rather Very Intelligent System'! The namesake for Tony's operating system is the human butler who looked after him as a child and who serves the Avengers in the comics: Edwin Jarvis. Mr. Jarvis plays a significant role in the TV series "Agent Carter" portrayed by James D'Arcy. 4. If viewed chronologically, then these are the second appearances of Coulson and Fury in the saga. CAMEO: 1. Co-creator STAN LEE shows up in every Marvel movie for a Hitchcock-style CAMEO! In "Iron Man", he's the elderly gent in the smoking jacket with his arms around two nubile blondes who gets mistaken for Hugh Hefner by Tony on the red carpet! Lol. END-CREDIT SCENE: 1. Almost all Marvel movies have multiple bonus scenes during and after the credits. The "Iron Man" end-credit scene shows Nick Fury approach Tony Stark about the Avenger Initiative. The next chronological stop in the MCU is "Iron Man 2" and its companion One-Shot "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" found on DPlus.

Great Natalie is filling in the blanks! Some clarifications: Arc reactor not really his heart (electromagnet keeping shrapnel from going further into his heart) but most think of him (Iron Man) that way. Gun did not backfire (first suit in cave , it ricocheted off Tony's helmet right back to the shooter. Tony mistook Stan Lee as Hugh Hefner, his first cameo in MCU. Jarvis "became" Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Iron Man is my alltime favorite Marvel character since I was a kid, so sure this movie blowed my mind, for it was so respectfull of the character and its origin story, even tho it was somehow different (Action takes place in Vietnam and Yingsen was a Vietnamese scientist) The movie was fun but had deep that no MCU today has, the more they makes movies, the less it's realistic and interesting, everyting goes into crappy CGIs and action, no character development, emotions or real story telling. Glad to see people who can really appreciate quality movies, keep up the good work 😉

The original is always the best and set the standard for what was to come until Disney screwed it all up. I still have two Iron Man T-shirts from that time I wear and its amazing how well done they were considering the metallic ink in the artwork hasn't degraded all that much. I also still have an original Iron Man LTD Mark VI Collector's Series Dr. Pepper soda can still sealed. Had two of them, but discovered something I sort of knew for awhile, but never examined until Feb. 2021. Soda manufactures make stores toss out soft drinks way too early for no reason. As noted before, I had two unopened Dr. Pepper Iron Man 1 cans on my bookshelf since January 2013. Saved it for the artwork on the side. Decided to get rid of one since the other I had was better in design and thought, "I wonder if it is still good?". So, I put it in the fridge. At lunch that day, I cracked it open to smell and taste. Guess what? Perfectly fine. Still 100% tasty with all the excellent fizz. Unless the can is compromised due to a puncture or some other damage, the contents remain good for years. How many years is the question? In short, stores are tossing good cans of soda out for no reason other than a stupid supposed expiration date printed on the bottom due to supply and demand. So, my can and its contents stood the test of time like Iron Man in a fight. :)

Speaking of MySpace, Jon Favreau actually asked people on MySpace, as he was getting things together to make this movie, who the most iconic Iron Man villain was, because they wanted to pick a good villain for the movie. So the MySpace reference ... it's kind of real. IIRC, I said that while the Mandarin was used a lot with Iron Man, I thought the Stane, Hammer, Armor Wars, and Titanium Man stories were probably the most central to the character. As for Yinsen shooting wildly, he's a doctor ... he is ethically opposed to taking lives. So he's just trying to scare them off. As for favorite Marvel movies, I'd take Iron Man, Captain America: First Avenger, and Captain America: Winter Soldier as the top 3. 2nd tier is probably Guardians 1, Infinity War, and Endgame.

Just an FYI, John Favreau got the idea from the Mandalorian, not the other way around. EXCEPT not directly. All the Mandalorian tricks have been LONG established in books, comics, and video games that featured Boba Fett. The flamethrower, whistling birds, knee darts, and lasers have all been shown in some form, even in the movies. Jango Fett had the flamethrower, we can see in Attack of the Clones. Wrist lasers on Boba Fett in Return of the Jedi. Whistling birds and knee darts I first saw in comics, but I'm told that there is a Han Solo book with the knee darts that predated the comic I read.

While this is definitely great, and I don't need things to be constantly Bigger and More Epic, I don't necessarily need a story to be *too* grounded in reality either. I do like "gritty" superhero stories, but I actually prefer Matt Reeves' The Batman over Nolan's films. Civil War was great but I do think Winter Soldier was probably the better story. It involved other characters but the conflict, focus, and development was still about Cap. I like superhero comic adaptations where the film is neither trying to shoehorn in as many Other Characters in just for the cameo nor trying to go out of its way to say "Yeah, absolutely none of them are available because we couldn't afford their screen time," and "You're on your own.. (again)..!". I like a movie to be about the protagonist, their obstacles and character growth, and the presence of other characters to make sense and be instrumental to either those obstacles or growth. And I think, after Civil War and Endgame, MCU films have mostly started to get there.

Cheadle's sarcasm and more aggressive attitude is more in keeping with the character of Rhodey. Cheadle came across as a warrior, Howard came across as a kid in a uniform. "Iron Man" is in my top 4 MCU movies along with "CA: The Winter Soldier", "The Avengers", and "CA: Civil War". Marvel Studios was formed in 1993 as Marvel Films. They actually had much of the MCU phases 1, 2, & 3 story line fleshed out in pre-production before selling to Disney in 2009. It took Disney time to slowly push out the old school Marvel talent and replace them with their supporters of Disney agenda. Quality of the franchise declined over time as a result. The old school Marvel talent wrote in the spirit of Stan Lee - more in depth characters & stories with humor added in as a bonus. Disney slowly turned the MCU into goofball comedies with silly buffoons & shallow characters with a priority for agenda over story telling.

"Tony's very much like the Bruce Wayne of Marvel. Ladies Man, Playboy, all this filthy rich." Well, you're not wrong about that. But the only thing that Tony lacks, is combat experience.

Jarvis & Vision are different actor who played. You can watch the series 'Agent Carter', James D'Arcy is Jarvis, not Paul Bettany

@@ForceOfLightEntertainment Funny you mensioned Captain America. In Marvel, there were various attempts to recreate The Super Soldier program, Tony used "hardware" the suit to do it. The Hulk used gama rays, and went haywire.

The first Iron Man is one of my all-time top MCU movies, because of Robert Downey, Jr. Iron Man was one of the first comic books I started reading in the 80s. RDJ was the perfect actor to play Tony Stark because RDJ's real-life issues mirrored what comic book Tony Stark faced. The only real gripe I have with the movie is Pepper Potts. Pepper is much different than how Gwyneth Paltrow's portrayal of her: I don't fine the MCU Pepper likable. Terrance Howard portrays and physical appearance I much more closer to the comic book Rhodey than Don Cheadle; I don't really care for him either. But all and all, Iron Man is a great movie.

The original story Wonder man a member of the avengers was badly injured in a battle and his consciousness was transferred into vision... wonder man and Wanda were lovers and the romance somewhat continued after the transfer but didn't last long.

Big difference between Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne. Tony Stark is Tony Stark. Bruce Wayne is Batman.. Bruce is just a character he plays to keep is true identity secret. He's not actually a ladies man, playboy or anything like that.

Iron Man one of my favorite MCU movies. It' infinitely re-watchable, I love the gear porn, and it knows how to balance humor with tragedy. As you ladies picked up on, it really shows what Favreau can achieve when not saddled with identity politics and modernity. Easily in my top 5, maybe top 3. Oh yeah, and Terrance Howard is best Roadie.

My thought on IRON MAN Well it was enjoyable, very well made funny in a bombastic way...loud, really a sneaky remake of ROBOCOP PG 13 in style, I would agree about comparisons with Bruce Wayne/BAT MAN, Stark lacks the brooding angst of Wayne, and his phycological complexity they are flip sides of the same coin, Stark (when in the suite) being more like SUPERMAN. it depends on how you like your heroes really - dark or light probably SPIDRMAN in the comic form is funnyer

I love this movie! It was so well done! I loved Leslie Bibb in the role as the reporter and I always loved Iron Man because we are both named Anthony. I also loved the MySpace reference in the opening act. I thought it was so close to the original comic as it went on and you are right 3 different actors play Howard Stark. I also prefer Terrance Howard to Don Cheadle

@@ForceOfLightEntertainment Yes, the first one is definitely a good one and like you said in the beginning of your video, this is right before Disney took over Marvel Studios. It just seems that Disney waters down everything that they acquire. That is something that I’ve noticed 🤔 and you wonder why Disney is struggling these days 🤨
