Ive done it by snipping a hole into the hose near the end and inserting an air blow gun, pointed toward the open end of the hose

It's because when the tank is low the pump isn't being cooled by the fuel in the tank the cold fuel hits the pump causing thermal shock and can cause the fuel pump to fail if you fill up at a half tank your fuel pump lasts longer

Most cars have a ball at the pipe inside you can't pit a hose in. Stops people from stealing gas.

Fuel pumps fail after filling up because the pump is not submerged when the tank is low and it gets hot when you fill up the fuel comes from underground tanks so the fuel is cold when it hits the hot pump it can cause it to fail from the thermal shock
