@@s2tenglish We need to move hundreds of tons per car. Do the calculations and you will find that you are going to need massive magnets. That means that any movement faster than a snail's pace is going to cause the rails to heat up like they were put in an induction forge and the resistance to motion from the counter electromagnetic force caused by the eddy currants is going to be just as massive. This is good for moving a door or other object that weighs a few hundred pounds at a slow speed on less than 1 MPH very rarely, like a residential door. Not really many other applications for it, but I could see maybe a couple others where it could replace air cushions.

@@s2tenglish I recently saw another video that shown the system being considered for just people moving, on one rail. It shown the "car" as only 2 passengers. The only use I can image this for is maybe airport terminal transfer. Maybe this kind of system could be useful for dock systems that only go back and forth short fixed distances. Like part of a container ship?

The comics of the guy are nice. Details: 1] the IronLev cart can not do turns, straight track sections only. 2] the IronLev cart, as seen, only provides 'magnetic' lift, not horizontal propulsion. ...The 'turn' problem can solved by having at least 1 of the magnet sets able to pivot, similar to how large steam engines solved the same challenge. As for #2, on the cart one sees 'large' motors. Hence, it is using rubber wheels for stopping/horizontal propulsion.

Thank you for more detail about this. THIS IS CRAZY!!! Why wasn't this invented 80 years ago. Its so impossibly straightforward that it.conceivably is easier than other methods that.are still in the R&D mode today. We have been exploring every other different method including superconducting magnets. You mean, it took till recently for someone to say why not just place two magnets close together in a clamp and see if that would work???? Why did it take so long to discover an easy way? His patent shows that there are still simple ways to do things that remain to be revealed. Good job.

Nice video, found you after searching for ironlev and you confirmed my thoughts, the eddie currents cause resistance so while wear from wheel friction might be reduced, the friction from the eddie currents is still going to be a huge issue. And the crossings and switches are an issue too. This tech seems like a dead end.

Would you please explain why switches pose such a problem? I read first about pure maglev switches, but I would have thought with Ironlev the rollers must guide it along the rail. Is the concern that the rollers would shear off? Or that switches have a gap between the pieces? Or that the rollers must bang into the side of the rail with any directional change?
@s2tenglish

It's a system that needs too much clearance on both sides of the rail . The railway is built around a very tiny flange and only on the inside so u need to move this u have use system where the whole track is switched like meglave

Could a possible solution to rail switches be a "hybrid" wheel and levitation system? Getting out of a station with its switches on wheels, then gaining speed and levitate only on long, linear tracks with no switches. How would you see that?

How long would it take the magnets to wear out and subsequently polarize the rail in the direction of travel by aligning the iron atoms? Also, is it really a better solution to use rare earth metals rather than electromagnets? With modernization efforts moving towards electric anyways, the propulsion system will likely necessitate electrical connection regardless.

In understanding what was meant when it was said that the system is comparable with current systems, they were trying to point out that no new construction will be needed. Possibly a comparable ironlev switch if they manage to get a full rail system, but no new "construction". We both know that every current maglev system currently in use from China to that university in America, needed a full organized construction from the ground up. All of those costs are already in the ground so it avoids much of the cost of a " new" maglev system. Once the tracks and roadbed are paid for the new maglev system becomes easier to realize. That's not BS.

I love this and want to have its babies. Aside from "traditional" rail freight and passenger traffic, I'm interested in other possibilities enabled by the technology. Can it be used (say) for maglev trams around city centres? Can it be used for "floating" skateboards running above the tram tracks? All sorts of stuff comes to mind if you let your imagination run free with this. I like the idea of single rail trains kept upright by gyroscopes, but then again,- I'm a bit mental.

@@s2tenglish You r looking at things from an Accountant's perspective. Traditionally, when Accountants run a business, the company shortly goes under. The Linear Induction method used by the Rohr Aero-Train setup, had an aluminum rail or spline running along the middle of the track, with a powered conductor at the edge. A pick-up on the craft would acquire the induced current. Therefore, a modification of the track with the spline would be a minimum requirement. For power, as a go-between, a generator could be mounted on the craft. For each power advance there are trade-offs. A motorized wheel is limited to the rotation limits of the motor. The jet engine approach has a higher upper limit, but a momentary [15 second] high sound as it passes by-standers. The Linear Induction approach has NO UPPER LIMIT, but would require track modification. To get more, you have to pay more. Current MagLev prices are between $17M and $25M per mile. Things are great when they are gold plated. As for payment, the Chinese are renowned for their High Rail Systems. However they are built on $XB government loans, with the public opting to use instead the slightly slower but less expensive existing rail systems. Therefore, testing the market for potential ridership is a key aspect.

From an article in CleanTechnica (Tina Casey) from one year ago. “Improved battery technology plus access to cheap renewable electricity open the possibility of battery-electric rail,” the Nature Energy authors explained. According to their findings, a standard boxcar could be converted to an electric tender car loaded up with batteries to achieve an all-electric range of 241 kilometers”. The article describes how the rail cars utilize regenerative braking to extend range which makes a whole bunch of sense given their weight. Given that one of the benefits highlighted for this technology was greatly reduced vibrations due to the levitation, might the solar panels be feasible? There would be less power from the regen braking but also a lower need.

Granted, NEVOMO is already building a system along the lines of IronLev in Europe as we speak, MagRail. Europe uses more passenger trains than American and they are talking about speeds that I consider stupidly dangerous. Here in the USA our system is built for speeds where 85 mph are stretching capabilities. I DON’T have the answers but I like to realistically hope! If NEVEMO can upgrade the existing railway infrastructure in Europe to the speed of 550 kph (340 mph) at a very competitive cost as they claim then they COULD slow it down to a safer speed and add renewable power generation.

@@dadofchen so speed is not something you can add to a existing path even if u upgrade the method of locomotion. G force is real so when the track was built all the twist and turns are baked it U cant go faster in it as that will need full five point harness per passenger .
