I was so heartbroken that morning but I was glad that I was able to come back in 2022. Hearing Mike Reilly say those magical words was the best part.

So sorry this happened buddy. That looked like some bad weather. Glad they played it safe. I wish they could have bumped that race by one day. Very exciting race plans coming up. Looking forward to following along! 🙌

I was there, got as far as sitting on the bus to go from transition to the swim start :( Afterward, crossing the Tower Bridge to go back to my hotel, I got a good look at what the storm was doing to the Sacramento river. The current was incredibly strong with lots of debris in the water. If the swim had gone ahead I think someone would've died in that water. That and the fallen trees on the bike course were what killed the race. Right call by the Administrators. I've deferred to IM Tulsa so as not to conflict with my two other 2022 races - Challenge Roth and IM Wales.

Completely agree. I have already had a race this year where someone died and it definitely hit hard. I'll pull the safety cord earlier than others might; a cool story and proving how hard I am just isn't worth that much to me. You were ahead of schedule to where I was. The current and trees were nuts. Enjoy all your races, that's going to be a packed year!

Was super bummed. But honestly, after we heard the bike was going to be shortened I didn't even feel like doing it. When I got to the stadium Sunday and hear them cancel it I felt relieved. Bummed I missed you. I was so in my own head I didn't even think to message you. I deferred to IM CA 2022 and will hope they open up Mt Tremblant next June.

Completely agree. Relief was exactly my feeling too. And then as the day went on and it became visibly apparent just how bad it was out there, I just shifted to thinking there was NO WAY we could have had a safe day. Just wasn't in the cards. Sorry I missed you too, maybe next time! It's a small race circuit. :)

Soo gutted for you Justin, i had similarly bad weather for the London Triathlon but the event went ahead (loads of accidents) the rain and wind was on another level, 22 is just around the corner bud ;-)

I heard about that! Glad (it sounds like) you kept the rubber side down. At least you've got a great story! Some of the worst days are the best memories.

Sorry, if it was me it would make it alittle easier to live with since you truest believe it was too dangerous to be out their racing. I was looking forward to tracking you and Doug, and of watching the pro shootout. Excited for 2022 for all three of us.

I couldn’t believe the videos of the weather coming in! Sorry for the disappointment, I know its upsetting when this happens. When I am racing my MTB, they love sending off in horrible weather! But this was a great call for safety.

Completely agree. Watching the vid doesn't even really convey it, it was pretty rough out there. Tons of downed trees and flooding all over course. And then the stunning weather on Monday! 🤣I've got some MTB friends, and yeah they go out in EVERYTHING.

@@smb06 Nice! Yeah, know CLT well, but up in Seattle now. FL is the plan! I got covid about a month ago which really took a lot out of me and I'm still getting back into it. I know I'm not going to be well prepared, but we're going one way or another. See you there!

Exactly, Florida! Similar course profile, and it just worked out well for a bunch of little reasons. I'm excited!

The phrase of "anything is possible, except a refund" is still true. However, through this whole past 2+ years, I believe ironman really took to task how angry/annoyed their athletes were with their initial response to COVID. Now it seems they have a really good deferral system, are really putting athlete safety first, and also attempting to rectify mistakes (e.g. IMWI). Yes they are a business and business will do what a business needs to do...but its seem they figured out a softer tact might be better for business and I do appreciate it.

Agree, they really have improved. I think I got something like 14 deferral options, including races in just a few weeks all the way out through late 22. Very, very respectable on their end. And then the on-the-ground local crew really did the best they could, I think, as well. They really wanted to make it work.
