Lionel, you are awesome and so inspiring. Skip the ironman with Jan, focus on 70.3 worlds and the PTO championship. It is possible your physiology makes it hard for you to take in water/calories for such a long day. Figure out 140.6 in a few years.

2 years ago I felt defeated in life. I have a lung and heart condition that left me with a Vo2 max of 23 and lung function of 53%. I was on the back end of 2 major surgeries and lived on pain pills not being able to do anything but sit on a couch all day. In 2019 I had a final surgery to relieve pressure from the right side of my heart and decided at that point I would literally die before I stayed inside my house in my comfort zone another day. I found Lionel while looking for some motivation in the midst of withdrawing cold turkey from 2 years of opioids ever day and felt some connection to his story and would watch any content I could find. I now train tri even though I haven't raced. I went from not running .1 of mile to running 6 miles at a 9:30/mile pace from barely pushing 150 watts to a threshold of 265 watts and from feeling like I couldn't breathe in the lap pool to swimming 500 meters all on 50% lung function and a stressed out heart. I know it sucks to not win I'm also a highly competitive person and my own worst critique. But thanks for sharing this with us. The imprint you make on peoples life is huge - at least the imprint you made on mine. Stay relentless brother it will all be worth it

Absolutely insane conditions on course this weekend. I offered as many words of encouragement I could muster when I passed Lionel (on his last lap, on my first) but seeing him suffer made me want to push on even more. Finishing and surviving were the ultimate goals. Not my best second half on the bike and the run was abysmal but I'm still proud of my 11:31 for my first ever Ironman.

This content speaks to me so much more than the other channels out there. Its honest and open. This video motivates me more than all of the overcoming the odds to win content, because I feel it. I've walked the end of a run when I just couldn't get me body to go any further and it felt AWFUL. Watching Lionel do it live was extremely difficult because I was rooting hard for him to win big. But seeing him come out the other side, not hiding from it, doing a video when I know he absolutely doesn't want to, that really speaks to me. We all have completely shit days, but the next time I screw up a race, or it's just so hot my body can't perform, this is what I'll draw on for the energy to finish, get up the next day, and start planning for the race after.

This race only reminded me why you’re my favorite in this sport. You’re on the same level as David Goggins for me. You show us what is possible from a human. I LOVE the fact that you finished this race, especially because you had to walk. When Lionel walks, I know it’s because he just can’t run anymore. Mad respect from me for finishing. It drives me crazy when pros DNF because they have another race around the corner. I get the idea of strategy, but I think for sponsored athletes it should be more important to have a solid fan base rather than winning some races that no one really cares about the next day. You get fans by inspiring people. DNF’s don’t inspire unless of course the DNF was absolutely necessary and not because you wanted to save your legs so you can do better next time. You definitely inspired me and there is no question that you’re my favorite after this race. I’m sure many people feel the same way.

@fritsgerms3565
@fritsgerms3565 3 жыл бұрын
@@DublinDapper do you think the race is about money? From where? There are no entry fees, there is no mainstream media, so where will the money come from? This race has never been about who is the best, that is Kona. You think Lionel, Jan or the other pros don’t know that? This is an exhibition for people who love the sport, between two guys that actually like each other. There are no PTO points, no money and no real bragging rights because none of the other pros are there. German club triathlon is huge, and if the clubs make an effort to participate as spectators, it has the potential to be a huge party. of which all the athletes and their families are a little part of. If you ask me, that is a much better option than sitting at home to re-group (whatever that means).

This was my first triathlon, and getting passed by Lionel and Sam on the bike (they were on 2nd lap, I was on 1st) was the greatest honor of my life. You said the course was miserable and I agree 100%. I basically walked the entire marathon to finish in 14:52. But Lionel, regardless of whether or not you finished 1st or 11th, you crossed that finish line and finished what you started!! The determination is more inspiring than the result! That race was hell but like you said, the very next day I'm ready to sign up for another Ironman. Also I can't wait to hear what you discover about nutrition because I need those tips for myself haha.

I just want to say how much Lionel inspires and motivates me in all aspects of my life. This past weekend I drove all the way up from Southern Idaho to CDA to watch only Lionel race and I would never even think about doing that for anyone else. Watching Lionel struggle in the second half of the marathon (after being neck and neck with Sam Long at the 9 mile marker!) was truly heart breaking to see. Lionel I think we all see how much freaking hard work you put into this sport and we all just want to see you succeed. Seeing all the troll comments on the livestream made me so angry that a man like you can also be part of someone’s joke. Ridiculous. I know you will be on top of that podium for an Ironman, it’s just a matter of when. Never lose the sight and even though that was a miserable experience just know I was left touch, moved, and inspired by you. I love you Lionel ❤️

Need to dial back the HR on the marathon Lionel 😎 Plus he's so lean there nothing to fall back on if the hydration goes off just a bit 🤠 Lots of cooling on the bike and swim, you only face reality on the run 😜 Your hr will tell you precisely when you're blowing up. You should run with just hr on ur watch. If its high its due to core temp or hydration and ya just gotta slow down! You can't tolerate a single minute in the red on a marathon 👍

I'm doing my first Sprint Triathlon in 9 days now, mostly motivated by you to join the sport. It took me years to build the confidence because I am Deaf myself so seeing all the videos and series you post up with captioning available as well helped big time in pushing my out of my comfort zone, I'm looking forward getting out there and finishing the race. Best video yet. The more humble the more human. It's easy to win. What shows the depth of someone's character is how you lose. It is in learning to lose graciously, that we learn to win humbly, honouring both ourselves and our competitors in equal portions, knowing how those who tried and failed feel in their defeat. You are learning more about the human condition than ever before Lionel and in this we truly celebrate your journey. Life is a learning journey. 🥂😄

yeah he was usong some crazy gatorade schedule they were discussing on the livestream. honestly i think thats what got him. incredible racing though. thanks for getting me into Triathlon Lionel (and Ari) so grateful to have you both as inspirations on this journey. i think 70.3 is lionel's sweet spot. i guess it seems like a set back but he could win 70.3 worlds for sure

@@rainbowmonkMC yes, he can win 70.3 worlds. But for sure He can be great at long distance too. I mean, he got 2nd in Hawaii already behind Patrick. And today he looks to be in better shape. I remember he mentioned his Gatorade strategy from older videos - several times. I guess thats what he is using. I know the german top pros (i am from germany that's why i know) all have individual mix because everyone is a bit different under extreme conditions and the stomach can get upset easily, especially in the heat. I also walked the 2nd half of a long distance because i had stomach issues on the end of the bike. It is so brutal when you are out of energy and the body wants to shut down. That day i finished and even with the bad time that was - in hindsight - probably my proudest finish. Damn you deserve that medal If you suffer like this ....

People are going to hate, but objectively speaking, you CAN give Jan a run for his money. I can't help but think it's a heat and nutrition combo. You could nail something in a cooler climate all day on your practiced nutrition, your body seems to go AWOL when it's hot. When I watched Sarah True fail time and time again in the heat as one of the best athletes in the women's triathlon circuit, it's clear it's not about talent or fitness it's a variant in her biology that she needs to find the right formula for. I know you'll find it for you!! 💪 #stubbornass

It’s definitely related to core body temperature and nutrition. The fact is his biggest fault is eating highly inflammatory foods.

Lionel work on that nutrition, consider consulting Patrick Lange and Frodeno. Also make sure to get your lifts in and nutrition (outside of the race) as well!

Let’s face it. The Germans do things properly. They take such a wholistic and scientific approach to these problems and not a trial and error or just work harder approach. All of the German triathletes know their numbers and blood work, burn rates etc. They never go into a race guessing. P I can remember being at a gym in Cologne and went to work on my back. There was a back area of the gym and it was set out as a series of machines and each one worked a different area of the back from top to bottom both sides (some I had never even seen before). It was about 7-8 machines that went around in circle circuit and I went through the whole circuit and at the end was just astounded. It had literally worked ever fiber of all my different back muscles. I just sat there and thought why have we been going to gyms since 1940s and not one gym I’ve been to in Canada, USA, Australia or across Asia been set out like this. Jan has SAP’s sports science division tracking all his data. Lionel should listen to Greg Bennett’s interview with Dan Plews, a doctor of exercise physiology, and coach and founder of endure IQ has two companies doing all the sports science and using AI algorithms to improve training with his other company attic. They need to sponsor Lionel and get working together. It will be the best test case known to humanity. Lionel is sponsored by WHOOP so clearly they should know some of the best coaches in this area and connect them to him.

Lionel, I hope you know how important videos like this are for a lot of people. the "win videos" may get the positive vibes and feel good to make, but videos like this are so important to people. Social media is so often a varnished and cleaned up pretend world, a world that leads many to compare themselves to it and feel shitty. Your willingness to be honest and talk about like when it just fucking sucks, it so powerful. I know for me, an average joe weekend pounding away with injuries and set backs, seeing these videos are so oddly motivational. And I assume they are to others, too. thank you for creating this content. it's important. and appreciated.

Brett Sutton won’t solve this any better than Dave Tilbury-Davis. They are both exceptional high end coaches. There is no issue with Lionels physical condition - he is mint there. Lionel can, and will work out the magic equation to “solve for x” and when he does, it will be magic!

May not be an "in-depth video," "not a good video," but it is! First, it shows you are human and don't have it all figured out. But with that being said, your drive, determination, planning, willingness to put yourself in a dark place, a painful place to become successful is motivation. You are contributing so much to your fans and the triathlon community, you're teaching us so much. Now, go fucking get it!

You are a machine - all too often Pro Triathletes do not finish a race when they "blow-up", no names mentioned, but you held on and fought the demons and finished...for me this shows your character and the fight you have .....and in my view it was amazing to see you finish. You should be proud that you never bailed and showed us AG's what it means to be an Iron Man - you went up ten fold in my estimations !! Well done you are a true IronMan

This is honestly one of your best videos. I think that showing that much determination would motivate anyone to do anything! When things are down and you are in that negative spin with your thoughts, these are the rare opportunites where you can show what kind of person you really want to be. I believe you did just that. Massive respect.

You sound very humbled by the experience. I've found this to be true. Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
