I really DID not want to change out the a/c tensioner on my 2004 Z71...but the shop told me that the horrible noise i was hearing was coming from my a/c compressor and it would need to be replaced...but they would not replace the compressor alone.... they would be installing a new compressor, accumulator or filter drier, expansion device, oil, and required gaskets and O-rings as well of new Freon. Total cost $1297.91 ....i decided to go home and investigate further....i started it up...crawled under it and started listening to everything...i felt like it was the a/c tensioner...i did the job and now their is NO NOISE WHATSOEVER! Total cost $38.86

Did you go from the top or did you remove the skid plate & get to it from the bottom? I have an 04 Z71 Avi & that's what I'll be doing within the next couple days. I'm figuring taking off the skid plate like he did in this video will be the easiest way of doing it.

Same in the Texas heat and my tensioner was so shot that when the clutch engaged the belt slipped so bad the ac compressor could not run.

@@thefoodcanu know if this is the problem when in idle my truck blows warm air I already have new a compressor new condenser new evaporator core everything is new just this damm thing😂

@@julianortiz699 I originally thought it was the pully tensioner but after replacing it, it still was blowing hot. I replaced the condenser and the accumulator and the ac compressor and all my actuators and it was still hot.... It turns out it was the evaporator core......... My guess for your problem is have you reset the ac blend doors, if so it could be the A/c control unit. Or if it gets cold when driving only then it could be low refrigerant, Which could be leaking from a washer not sealing when you replaced stuff, this happened when i did my new a/c compressor.

The belt snapped while I was driving my 2005 Z71 suburban today, and the A/C died. Turned out the pulley on the tensioner was completely seized, causing the belt to rub and ultimately break. Was an easy enough fix thanks to this video.

Just a tip for anyone with 5.3 97-05, you can do this repair from the open hood position without jacking the truck or removal of and skid / splash guards. Use a 15mm +wobble+3” extension. That combo will get you past the trans cooler lines just enough to make it work. Start with a ratchet to break each side and then go cordless or pneumatic for the rest . When reinstalling the new one , do it first with both bolts already through the new tensioner for easy alignment. A drop light is helpful hung from the hood release latch. Tighten tensioner and then use a cheater bar and 3/8” ratchet to pre tension the tensioner with no hands. Then you are free to finagle the belt and release tension.

Hello all! Just completed this job. It can be accomplished from open hood topside. I tried going from under and could not get on to the left bolt well enough to break it loose. Too many things in the way. From the the top, disconnect air intake for clear view. Use a breaker-bar and socket for the left and ratchet with small extension for the right. For me this way was much easier. Oh, and a step stool helps too.

My 2004 Silverado 1500 V8 A/C Compressor Belt snapped while driving. I usually overspend so I decided to just replace the A/C Compressor Belt. It was my first time swapping it but the A/C Compressor Belt Tensioner for sure didn't look right visually with the new belt installed. I figured I might as well test out the $20 belt to see what happens and sure enough there was a burning smell within 5-10 seconds coming from the engine. I let everything cool off and inspected the belts. The A/C Compressor Belt was being burnt by the contact surface of the A/C Compressor Belt Tensioner. It definitely looks like my tensioner isn't even spinning. It looks like I shouldn't have skipped out on buying the A/C Compressor Belt Tensioner as it definitely needs to be replaced.
