Social Anxiety for anyone fucking sucks, i feel you. try to go places involving any potential hobbies you may have maybe once every week or every few weeks depending on your anxiety levels, and dont force yourself to approach anyone, just enjoy what you can. If you need to leave early, do that. Small steps, pal. Don't force yourself too far past your limits, just test your limits bit by bit. If there's one club you find at a library you like, go. You'll see the same faces, learn their habits and pick up things over time before you ever have to approach anyone. As someone who has fallen into severe depressions because of the overwhelming and life controlling anxiety ive faced, dont shame yourself(or let others shame you) for your hardships. If you have access to therapy, please get into counselling. Look up if there are any resources where you live that will cover counselling (My state has a behavioral health act which means anyone with mental health issues can get all sorts of aid at a reduced cost if not free). You aren't alone in your fears, and there are ways to accommodate yourself while trying to find a balance and forge connections. I wish you the best, you'll find what works for you. Get all the support you need to get there, no human is an island.

There's a pretty easy way to tell if someone is fliting with you when they ask you the time. If they are, they'll keep talking to you after you answer. If not, they'll say "thanks" and walk away.

@blackmage471 you just gotta be friendly, give compliments when there's a gap in conversation (and you genuinely believe what you're saying) and accept them when they come, anything more suggestive is HEAVILY reliant on your social awareness- spoken as someone with next to no experience lol. Some people are flirty with no intentions, others are flirty for people they're explicitly attracted to, I'd just take it as far as they're comfortable and take a step back. If they ask for the time and keep talking? I'll hold conversation, bring up topics, if I notice something about them I like I'll point it out- if they smile and accept it, I'll air on 'They could be flirting'.

I _am_ a generally friendly person and am capable of holding a conversation with most people. But I am also one of those men who, if you say, "hi, how are you?" my immediate thought is you've just asked me to inform you on my personal well-being. "How are you dong?" is NOT a greeting, to me, it's a question. So, a conversation about the time is only a conversation about the time. That's all it is, and all it ever will be. I will not pick up on any secret flirting code that you want to go back to your place for "Netflix & Chill." So as a personal rule, I do NOT play the "signals" game. I think it's shallow, meaningless, and stupid. Humans are not psychic, and I'm no different. Just tell me what it is you want, don't waste my time with word games.

Ah... I dont know if that works for identifying behavior. I often will ask innocuous questions of strangers and continue to try to talk to them, but not if I'm flirting. It's always because I have an obligation to be somewhere, and the attempted interaction is entertaining. Like if I'm waiting in line at a store checkout or if I'm in a waiting area with a vibe that conversation wouldn't be too awkward. I can only hope past incidents like this weren't perceived that way by the other person since I was primarily trying to be friendly and aliviate the awkwardness of waiting in public.

Fun fact about flirting: given a random sample of men and women, when asked to determine if a man or a woman is flirting with someone else in a carefully stagged even, there is no correlation whatsoever between the participants answers and whether or not the staged event involved any actual flirting over TALKING WITH THE OTHER PERSON. Basically, there is literally no way to determine if someone if flirting with you, and any universal attempt to describe it is complete bullshit based on circumstantial experience. It’s real fun innit?

@@MkFilipe2 Sure. Thing that's missing here is context: people go to bars and clubs to get laid. Not all the people; some people are just there to have a good time, but its understood that these are places where people looking to hook up find other people to hook up with. If you're there looking for a girl, you've got a much better chance of catching these signals than if you were, say, in a grocery store to buy chicken. Needless to say, they "look and smile" strat is going to be a lot less effective in a context where people aren't actively looking out for these signals.

As much as it’d be right lovely to just “get over it” it’s not so much that I don’t _want_ to talk to a potential partner, as much as it is that I don’t really know what to fuckin’ talk about. Talking about things out of my sphere is hard enough as is without the pressure of accidentally tripping up and saying something someone construed as a backhanded comment, now I’m trying to talk to someone who might feel threatened if I accidentally talk about something I’m passionate about that comes across as weird or creepy, even if the intention is far from it. I’d love to talk about games, because I’m really good at those, but my father conditioned me to believe that pulling the conversation to games is a shitty way to go about conversation, so now I can’t tell if I’m being annoying or not. I could try talking about music I like, but most of my favorite music is just kinda _vibing_ music. It’s not something exciting, so I usually either wax poetic about it, or try to relate vague (potentially pretentious) feelings about it. If you want advice on how to flirt with a dude like me… just… _fuckin’ tell us we look cute, and we melt._ I am starved for that kind of complement, especially from folks I’d like to date. Complement us on our hair, or even our clothes if you think it looks good. Just be sure to mean it. Give reasons and strike up a conversation about your favorite things. Even if I didn’t know anything about it, if you’re really into it, I’d listen. Just be genuine. Best way to pick up someone who seems interested but clumsy isn’t to wait for them to be over their clumsiness. It’s always going to be to throw them a bone and help get the conversation started. Basically… just be a friend, darn it. If you’re more comfy talking about stuff than them, you need to make the first move to start that conversation. Otherwise, it might just not happen.

And what's so bad about the friendzone? Making friends gives you more opportunities to meet more people, which means more chances to find someone to start a romantic relationship with. Those friendships also help you grow as a person, making you a more appealing romantic partner. And, though rare due to many factors, relationships in the friendzone _can_ move into the romancezone sometimes. My advice to anyone finding themselves frequently "stuck" in the friendzone: focus on being a better friend. (This includes not just moving on from the person entirely if an attempt to progress past the friendzone fails, as so many people seem to do. [Though exceptions can be made if the attempt resulted in the parties involved becoming uncomfortable around one another, but at that point it's just a disaster which shouldn't be common, and if disasters _are_ common for someone, they _might_ have some bad habits to change.])

She thinks you're handsome but doesn't know if she wants to take it any further, are you a creep? Annoying? Do you vibe with each other? You have a conversation to determine that. She also doesn't want to embarrass herself(same as you) by asking out someone with zero interest in her, so you both just throw hints at each other. If it doesn't work out you just had a conversation, that's why it's good to start with a normal conversation before throwing hints, maybe you even enjoy flirting (some people flirt because it's fun). I cannot think of a single person in my life that got together with each other without some degree of flirting, verbal or otherwise(hanging out with someone in their group more often, getting physically close to them and seeing their reaction etc). If someone confesses to you(like in an anime) she gives all the social power to you, and that only works if you already have a crush on her. Flirting is a back and forth where no one needs to be embarrassed if it doesn't result in dating/hookup (except if you act like a creep or take it too personally).

The problem is- you could throw out as many subtle hints as you could and either someone didnt get it or they took and played you. i get what you mean, both parties kinda come at each other like a slowly rising tide. I bank on honesty being the best policy if it's clear and transparent enough at the start how far itll go.

whenever i hear a woman describe her flirting its just a normal interaction. thats not flirting. not even a bit. fliritng is indirectly indicating your interest. like you could walk up to a guy and just ask if you can join him with a smile. thats literally like baseline. it doesnt come off as desperate because some people genuinely like meeting new people. its noncommittal and gets you talking. is he still not getting the hint? then put your hand on his. its not that hard and your not even putting yourself in a place where your even facing rejection. its either "he just wants to be alone right now" or "yay i can join him and we can talk" its not a rejection of you its a rejection of company.

Most women have zero rizz since the men are told to do all of the work. Zen shows just how long its been since any men have approached her as well. A smile isn't going to cut it anymore. I tend to be a dolt when it comes to social cues, looking back over my past I can see dozens of opportunities I was too out of it to pick up on the cue. But the "look, smile, look away then look again, smile, look away" one Zentreya mentioned was the one cue I knew and would recognize and buy that girl a drink, ask if I could sit with her. Even a social idiot like me could recognize the subtle message of "you attract my attention but I am too shy to stare" and see the opportunity for an interaction, see where it goes from there.

According to my dad, there were several hints that I was Asexual back before I knew the term. He personally witnessed several classmates display a degree of interest that he himself would have spent days obsessing over trying to work out, and just watched me fail to do anything more than wave them goodbye and get in the car, simply because I didn't see it as anything more than simple friendliness. I have no idea what anyone thought of me back in school, but I imagine that in the romantic discussions amongst the girls, I was labelled as 'immune to basic flirting, bring the heavy artillery'. With that said, I was on good terms with most of the girls that I knew throughout my school life, so maybe they just liked having someone around who didn't interpret every word as an invite.
