Building A Hot Rod Seat For Under $100!! - Roadster Pickup Shop Truck

While the Roadster Pickup is mechanically ready for the road, we need to make a seat from scratch. With the chopped windshield frame we need to make the seat back and bottom thinner then stock to allow us to sit lower and back more. Matt recently purchased firm upholstery foam and wool blanket on Amazon, and we have plenty of plywood kicking around the shop. Time to build a super cheap hot rod seat!!!

in the future, you should lay some 1/4" wide, single thickness cardboard strips like a beer case or a cereal box is made of over the foam and staple through it, then fold the foam back on it's self. that will help keep the staples from tearing through the foam, and you won't feel the staples. you can also roll the edges of the cover material a couple times around the same cardboard strips on the straight runs to help hold the staples, keep the edges straight, and will give you a nice finished looking edge. my grampa did upholstery as a hobby after he retired, and recovered a few chairs and recliners and a couple of couches. they sell the strips in a roll at upholstery supply stores, but beer cases, and cereal boxes are free. that's what i used for a footstool i made myself and i covered it with denim from an old pair of levis. it turned out pretty good, and it's lasted over 15 years so far.

as a person that stretches his canvases for painting, i always start in the middle of the run; center of the top, bottom, left or right, and pull towards the outside corners. That's where you finally mess with the tucking and folding for a nice clean corner. I think that same method would apply on the army blanket. That said, you've done a great job, and I should keep my big mouth shut!

The seats look great guys and you can never use too many staples since they are hidden. I've upholstered a fair amount of seats for use indoors only and outside patio furniture. The only thing I did differently was on the outside chairs I put 2 coats of outdoor primer on the wood to close the pores and keep the wood stable since there is a possibility the wood gets wet which if caught in the rain the shop truck seat would get wet.

Very cool. That throttle link and oil filler on the firewall are very cosy. Seeing you make all these things fit is a lesson in how small the 1920s & 30s Fords were. I used to have a Mazda 2 and I think that was a larger car than this (and about one percent as desirable, by most measures). Love the seats, can't wait for the footage of its first road trip.

@@stephenfrost2272 That's where modern cars are more desirable - long trips. Higher cruising speed, less fuel use, less noise. Around town? On the subject of upholstery..... I would recommend the KZfaq channel Chest'er, it is a guy who builds furniture from scratch, out of plywood, and then upholsters it using staple-guns and glue. He is in Russia and speaks Russian, but most of what you need to understand on it from the videos is purely visual and is largely done without words, and it is possible to turn on Russian-to-English translation once you've turning closed-caption on to get an idea what he's saying when he does say something. The guy clearly has a LOT of experience, and it is fascinating to simply watch, even if you're never going to do upholstery or what amounts to furniture-builds again.

Nice rod. I've been reading all the tips. And they are all correct. As a 22-year upholsterer, you start in the middle and work out if the cover material doesn't have a lot of stretch. If it's pullable (like an army blanket) staple a corner, then snug it on the far corner. Then pop a staple at center and one in the middle of the runs. Check it for sags, pulls a s following the proper line, and then go to town with the staples. That's why boxes of staples are 10,000 count. 🤙🤙

The seat is cool and matches the truck perfectly. Old Army-Navy surplus stores are a great place to shop and the wool blanket kinda looks like mohair. I was going to suggest putting "hospital corners" on the blanket so that it would wrap around the edges better and without any wrinkles, but your method came up fine.

Matt, the seat looks GREAT! I agree with starting the stapling from the center and working out (for next time!) When you attach a bracket to the wooden seat back, (also for next time) try getting some "T-nuts" with the prongs in 1/4-20 or so, and insert them thru the back, hammer them flush to the wood, then you have threaded inserts to attach the bracket, rather than having nuts sticking out into the foam cushioning. Those T-nuts are very handy to have on hand for various projects around the shop/garage/house.

We didn’t have any of those nuts laying around or I’d have used them. Went missing with a recent clean up in the shop!

Good job on the seat , as many have offered upholstery advice I'd like to offer some carpentry advice . When using the power saw , no need to have the blade at its lowest setting . Have the tips of the blade about 1/2 below the underside of the wood . This is what I was taught , any real carpenters please feel free to correct me . Makes moving the saw a little easier .
