Berlin was one of the few Tin Pan Alley/Broadway songwriters who wrote both the lyrics and the music for his songs. Although he never learned to read music beyond an elementary level, he composed around 3,000 songs (other sources estimate 900 songs), many of which became popular songs such as "Cheek to Cheek", "Puttin' on the Ritz", "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "Let's have another cup of coffee", "Let's face the music and dance", "There's No Business Like Show Business", "White Christmas" or Easter Parade Easter) and patriotic hymns like "God Bless America."
