Your knowledge of Old Hollywood is fantastic, I'm a huge old hollywood fan stemming from when I grew up in the 90s watching TCM in my granny's sitting room. I really think you have a great awareness of the importance of that era in cinema and you have some really interesting information on the personal lives of those great stars, and your dog is cute haha keep up the good work

Joan Crawford had every right to resent Norma. Joan was more beautiful talented and paid her dues and was undermined simply because Norma was married to the boss.

One of my favorite vlogs of yours Jordan. I was always fascinated by Mr. Thalberg and Norma Shearer because Joan Crawford hated them so much. I don't think I would have liked Crawford. Thalberg was a genius and his story is amazing.

Sheila Riley Yes, my favorite too. Naturally when Norma became Mrs Thalberg, she got plum roles ! It infuriated Crawford. But when you marry the Big Boss, it tends to go that way. 😂😂😂 The Women is such fun to watch because Joan got to treat Norma Shearer with hatred. Awesome movie.

@@michaelzadell9063 no, the grandchild of a first cousin is a cousin twice removed. A true second cousin would be you as your grandmother's grandchild and your relation to your grandmother's siblings' grandchildren. A true third cousin...ok, I cannot remember. I'll have to look it up. I'll get back to you on that one if possible. But you see, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc...cousin relationships are much more origin involved than cousins removed. Both of their children are dead, but I'm assuming there are grand kids still living. (Norma never embraced the whole grandmother thing. It wasn't her cup of tea.) Post-Thalberg she had affairs with Mickey Rooney (when he was fifteen) and George Raft. She eventually married Martin Arrouge, a handsome ski instructor maybe twelve years her junior. They were married until her death in 1983.

Hi! Another great Vlog! Fact: Norma Shearer definitely was cross-eyed but did daily exercises so she could control her eye muscle better. Notice how there are few, if any, shots in any of her movies where she looks full face into the camera. I also love Idiots Delight! But it was filmed in 1939, so it was a movie about fighting facisim before WWII, not WWI. The hotel was supposedly in the Italian Alps. The soldiers who were holding everyone captive were members of Mussolini's black guard. Just thought I'd let you know. And....you opened by taking a walk by my old apartment building!!! Thanks for that!

I very much appreciate your work and the research you put into these videos. I particularly enjoyed your summary of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Hollywood life and subsequent death. I did want to mention that I had read, several times, that Thalberg was rather flippant about writers, famously saying that writers should be more like an assembly line, implying that they were not all that important? Apparently he and Fitzgerald’s were friends and he even based his Last Tycoon on Thalberg? Well, anyway! I sincerely hope you are still making videos. You seem to be something of a writer yourself, your passion is quite enjoyable!

The song you reference as being performed In “Idiot’s Delight”, by Clark Gable, (as Harry Van & “Les Blonds”) “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, I believe actually began its film life 9 years earlier, in a movie by the same name, which starred one of Mae West’s earliest accompanists, Harry Richman, who became a big star in his own right. I wonder how much Irving Thalberg smoked and drank, if he did either one. I wouldn't be so sure about never cutting loose. In her memoir "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim," Fredrika Sagor Maas describes a party at the Ambassador Hotel in the 1920's, shortly after she moved out to Hollywood to work as a screenwriter. The studio gave private parties for the top brass and rented several private bungalows for their exclusive use, as well as taking over the main ballroom of the hotel. Maas employed a seamstress and became good friends with her. Maas went to the party and says she naively opened the wrong door to a bungalow at the wrong time. Irving Thalberg, naked, was chasing the seamstress around a chair in the room. Maas, mortified, quickly closed the door and fled. She was so embarrassed and confused, she never spoke to the seamstress again. She says this was when the blinders were truly ripped off her eyes regarding the decadence of the industry she worked in. Before Norma Shearer married Thalberg, she and Fredrika were good friends. Both were invited to stay at San Simeon and be roommates, but Freddie cancelled at the last minute because another friend begged her to help find her drunken husband who was on a bender somewhere. This proved to be a costly mistake, as Freddie could've used Thalberg and Norma's support a few years later when she ran afoul of Producer Harry Rapf.
