When browsing Walmart's car stereo section recently online, I came across this $10 Blaupunkt head unit (Toronto TRT1049) and thought it would be interesting to get one to see how bad it is. It just seems too good to be true...includes Bluetooth, USB, aux inputs, RCA outputs and more! You may have seen me test other Blaupunkt products recently (monoblock amp and 12" subwoofer). I had very low expectations for this unit, but how did it perform? Watch and find out!
Update: Rear 3.5mm is indeed a line level output. It fades with the rear channel. Sorry, the cable I tried in the original video must've been bad.

I'm not going to lie. For $10... this would make a fantastic garage boombox. You can't buy an amp and a bluetooth receiver online for $10.00..... The fact that this thing actually puts out 10 watts x 4 is friggin impressive!

The sad part is that Blaupunkt used to be one of Germany's biggest manufacturers for car radios, providing car stereo systems to the German Big 3 (VW Gamma, Audi Symphony, and BMW Business CD to name a few) under Bosch ownership.

Blaupunkt used to make pretty high end stuff, but they got sold by Bosch who owned the company. Bosch didn't sell the part that made 80% of the money though (professional automobile audio solutions), so Blaupunkt went bankrupt. Since 2016, it's just the name that still exists to sell cheap china shit. My mother still has a pair of old Blaupunkt headphones, they are incredible.

I am not sure why this video was suggested to me since I am not an audiophile nor own a car, I'm guessing it's because I subscribe to Techmoan and a few channels for electronic hobbyists, technicians, and engineers. In any case I did not expect a positive review of a cheaply price piece of audio equipment on what looks to me like an audiophile channel. I guess I am prejudiced against audiophiles because of all the expensive snake oil based junk that is marketed to them. I'll have to work on that. I won't subscribe since audio products aren't my things except for the weird, rare old or historic ones that Techmoan often features, but I hit the like button for the honest and objective review.

I still remember back in the early 80s the Blaupunkt Berlin head unit was one of the best available on the market and retailed for a small king's ransom. It was considered the epitome of hi-end car audio and one of the most commonly sought-after by car audio thieves. But when I started seeing Blaupunkt products being sold in K-Mart, any interest I may have had in their components kinda' fizzled out. Now I've lived long enough to see Blaupunkt on Amazon for $10 bucks. Jeezus, somedays I feel ancient.

In fact Blaupunkt is not Blaupunkt anymore in the same way as Aiwa, Grundig, Sanyo and some other legendary brands from the 80's. A chinese company called United music group or something (I am not sure) bought only the brand names from the long defunct german and japan companies.

It may not be a fancy advanced head unit that can drive 2 subs or anything, but honestly that's really not bad for $10. It would be perfect for modernizing grandma's car.

I bought some car stereo for 20$ and it drained my cars battery after 2 months of use, i did connect it to ignition vire so it doesnt drain when car is off but no luck it still drained it when it was off..

Nice review! I loved the fact that you, in addition to function/load/real-world testing, showed us the internals and gave a quick look on some componentry. You can usually get a good idea of product longevity by looking at the components used and build quality. Keep up the good work! =)

The last aftermarket stereo I had the in the early 2000s was a Blaupunkt that at that point was probably around 10 years old and that thing was a beast. What I loved about it was that it came with two sets of RCA outputs when most others only came with one.

I got a Walmart stereo one time from a brand called XD or something like that. Didn't look too bad. It was 18 bucks and change before tax. Wasn't expecting much. Fucker had a remote and Bluetooth audio that worked, plug in for an amp and subs and it sounded nice. I rocked that until I sold the car. Good deals are out there

Big D, Thanks for the review! I bought three @ $9.99, and made a cooler stereo for my shop/Jon boat, and it's been great for about 6 weeks now, no issues, and I play it almost daily. Can't believe it's only $10! With the thin profile, I didn't have to cut all the way through, only through the outside and used a heat gun to stretch the inner liner to accept the speakers, so it keeps my drinks and lunch cold with no issues or leaks. Not sure what I'll do with the other two units, but might keep as a backup, in case this one blows, but so far, so good! Thanks again!

Yeah, back when he first uploaded this video I would have snagged one. Now at double the cost, it's not really worth it as there are hundreds of other options for the twenty dollar range.

YT algorhythm sucks, and is profit motive based. Don't be too surprised if they're getting some of that $10 price increase since this originally came out. Launch at $10, let it slowly gain good reviews at that price, then jump to $20 and really push the good review videos to make a lot more money. Happens a lot, and you can bet YT is making part of that extra $10, even if it's by way of 'commercial cost to promote these videos' etc. All of these 'really good deal that few people saw, whoops now the price is higher and youtube is pushing the videos hard' aren't happening by accident. And a lot of people just buying one will say screw it, seems OK and get it at the $20 price..

I'm not too surprised to see the market for aftermarket head units crashing. it is nearly impossible to install a head unit on many modern cars, and if you manage to at all it might mess up features built into the car. So the market that is left is older cars that are not going to be around for that much longer and manufacturers are clearing old stock and discontinuing product development. I think amps and subs and such will be around for a while because they are still installable, but the head unit market will shrink and not return.

Yeah the market is definitely shifting toward integration/installation adapters and the big names we knew in the 80s/90s don't seem to be investing much in that market. Audiosource, scoche, etc are primed to grow in the near future since they already have R&D departments dedicated to integration with OEM data bus/wiring. I'd imagine we'll see at least a couple more big names fall to Blaupunkts level in the coming years. Sad to say it tho :(

I wouldn't mind seeing more reviews like this; I watched this when you first released it, a year ago, but didn't need a stereo. Now, this isn't $10 anymore, but there are a lot of low dollar stereos out there. I'd love to see reviews of the best seriously low-dollar ones.

I bought one from Walmart a few months ago for $12, and ponied up the extra $3 for a 3 year, full replacement warranty.. :-) I installed it in my fishing boat, replacing the 1999 AM/FM Cassette deck that it came with. Just like the video, everything worked perfectly. I tossed a Micro SD card in it, and it bluetoothed to my phone almost instantly. Call quality through the handsfree (In my boat) was great at long as the 40hp outboard wasn't running, and it pushes my outdoor Kicker KB6000W speakers perfectly!! When it fails, I'll unplug it and have Walmart give me another. I hope I didn't waste that $3 for the warranty... LOL

I've had it installed for a year now, it works. My only issues with it are it doesn't get loud enough sometimes to be audible over the wind when the radio is down. My other issue with it is that the display stopped working well shortly after installing it. The Bluetooth works well and auto connects when I get into my car without fail every time.

I was tired of riding in my dad's car that had no stereo, but I wasn't prepared to drop a few hundred on a stereo for his work car, so I ended up finding out about the Dual radios from Walmart. Best $20 I ever spent. The sounds is great for what it is.

Blaupunkt has gone bankrupt in 2015 (more or less already in 2009). The companys name Blaupunkt was sold and today, the brands name is printed on cheap china-electronics. Before that, they had pretty good quality products.

The audio jack on the back is for the bluetooth mic.On my Pioneer it's smaller than 3.5.

I think the name/brand blaupukt was sold to some chinese manufacturer. In the 80/90's, blaupunkt was a quality german brand, in brand style and quality comparable to brands like kenwood, denon and the likes.

I have the $20 Dual Bluetooth headunit, about a year and a half ago and it’s in the second car now since then, works great! Also got my girlfriend the Apple car play dual double din radio at wal mart also for about $225, they have both been awesome purchases so far!

So apparently a lot who bought these had issues with the screens dying after a few weeks. Just a warning, even though this cost less than some value meals 😝

This thing is perfect for stuffing in an old car that just needs tunes since you could put it up under the dash, in the glovebox, or just under the seats and keep it on BT only.... Or work/race trailer use. Hell, get some lithium batteries and make a solid camping boombox out of old bullshit that's lying around.

Same here, it’s crazy that in 2003 I was specing out their products as aspirational items. This would be pretty awesome for my Jeep when the top is off. I won’t be losing out much if someone jacked it from me.

I think I paid more for it back a couple of years ago The sound quality is excellent. I'm happy with mine. It was this or replace my Nissan full-sized unit where the CD drawer jammed. The difference - I paid $20 for mine as opposed to $300 for the Nissan thing. Works fine for me - the SD card and USB stick instead of a CD. I'm happy.

I think that 3.5mm jack in the back might be for the steering wheel controls adapter. I could be wrong, but my aftermarket had a similar style plug for the steering wheel control adapter.

I bought one when it was still $10 on Amazon (in 2019), and had it for two years. It was good for the first year, but the screen on it is the weak point. After a year of use during a extreme humid summer the screen failed. Since I did have the remote I was able to use it I could not though see what the settings were. Apparently high humidity & temps as well as no protective cover on the screen caused it to fail. I replaced it with one from Boss model 612UA for $30 when the remote failed too after two years of use. For $10 I got my use out of it however I would not recommend it above $20 due to that exposed screen especially if you live in a area that's really humid & hot.

I can confirm screen failure during high temps of summer. I bought two of these units. Installed one in my car and used one indoors. The screen is still fully functional on the one kept indoors after 4 years of daily use. But the volume knob is getting unresponsive.

Not surprised at all, that´s the same as any random BT speaker where here the Amp is different and it have a display. I was expecting a couple of class D amps but they sticked to classic AB TDA. Well, those are specifically Car designed but a couple of TPA3118 would be maybe more expensive and require more design work on the board.. But hey, it´s still less than 20 bucks, which is more than reasonable. Effectively it can be a nice BT box option but I would disable the 7389 and go Class D for efficiency. Thx for the video!

I was in a store (big store, but just the "one", not a chain or anything) here in Sweden and for fun bought a $6 BT stereo speaker including battery a small lithium battery/FM radio, SD card/MP3 and soo on... though it was a joke... tried it and it was everything it said it was, just awesome... Really strange I thought, they could have sold these easy for $30 or more... Then instead of playing music I played a movie and realized Left/Right output was wrong... It was a really easy fix though just turn it upside down... But then I got it why they sold them so cheap... Some factory mishap and instead of just trashing them they sold them really cheap to a store... Sometimes you get lucky :-)

An Update on the Toronto TRT1049 $10 Blaupunkpt Stereo, Bought it when the video came out. It worked ok at first however, for some reason you would need to press the reset button to get it to work after you receive 3 or more calls via bluetooth from this unit. After resetting it about 3 times it has since now worked well when using bluetooth especially with incoming phone calls. Secondly the display on the unit is now almost totally unreadable(The Display LED's /LCD is partly working) and there is no brightness button to increase visibility during the day so you have to guess what mode you are in or what you are listening too. The most i can tell is that when its on you can see the Blue light at night or during the day you can hear the sound, there is very little equalizer adjustments you can do if any but it kind of works. In My opinion It was not worth buying this unit and spending the time installing it only to have these problems just a few days afterwards and the LCD display just kept loosing letters etc. If you can afford a bit more i would go for a unit that is a little better like the cheaper pioneer over this unit. I have had this unit installed in my car approximately a year now and it still "sort of" works but i will be replacing it with a better unit soon.

I have one of these, the only problem I have had (twice) is the volume automatically went down to 0 on it's own, but I've had it since Sept. Sounds really nice and the FM works really well. :)

Got my 2 in yesterday...hooked one up today. Gotta say that the radio reception is pretty damn good...at least in my area. I like the app that lets you control it from your phone. I couldn't believe how fast the USB port is. I wish that the display could be a bit brighter than what it is. Other than that I don't have any complaints. Really can't complain much since it's only $10...🤪🤪🤯! I may even use it with a DSP to do a decent small system.

I have that stereo hooked up in my garage. It actually does pretty good. Even the Bluetooth. Mind you I don’t use the speaker output. I use RCA to a old radio. It’s a very basic radio but it sure works great. You will see it in almost all of my KZfaq videos in the background. Lol

I bought a Blaupunkt Omaha 206 about 2 months ago from Walmart. I paid about 50 dollars for it and when I hooked it up, I was amazed. Sounds great, looks great and one of the best deals I have seen all year. I had an older Pioneer that was almost 250 dollars at the time. It was a good system but this one sounds better and offers so much more. When I saw this 10 dollar system, I would have never touched it because it is so cheap. However, after buying the 50 dollar one which has a CD player included, I believe that Blaupunkt puts out quality even at such a low price. I understand the concerns about putting this unit into a 70,000 dollar car. But if you spend that much on a vehicle and decide to install a 10 dollar unit in it, you need to have your head examined. New cars have very complicated wiring systems. The slightest spark can blow your entire cars electrical system out. Putting a ten dollar unit in a new Cadillac or BMW should be considered a criminal offense. These units were made to be installed in an older Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra or even a 80's or 90's Mustang or Camaro. It updates your older vehicle into the age of Bluetooth, SD cards and USB ports. It does it without costing you an arm and a leg.

Wow! On my channel, I create portable speaker systems with a lot of neon lights that I develop. This would be AMAZING to add in. I found a cheap stereo for $20 but this is half of that. The only problem with mine is that the knob doesn't work all the time. And I'm sure this device is mainly just for connecting different types of devices but it still works great!
