Stop lying🤥🤨 Yamaha fanboys (Mt 03 34hp 18ft) and Cb500f 44hp and 28ft. I live in the uk and no mt03 can keep Up with cb500 or ktm and ninja 400. I have test ride the mt03 big downgrade from cb500f feel like a 250cc has no pull just hp. Stop lying and do a drag race quarter mile so people can see the truth.

I have never meet or seen anyone that makes fun of someone for riding a smaller bike. As long as you are riding its all good. Be it a 50 cc scooter or a busa as long as you are having fun.

Nobody has ever said anything negative about my gsx250r...and Im in Harley heavy territory. Generally I get a 'nice gixxer...oh wait is that the 250 model? Bet that gets killer gas mileage!' Or 'that looks cool i bet its a lot of fun to ride' the closest I ever get to criticism is 'ya planning on swapping out the exhaust?'

Power wise theyre probably the same, but constant cruising and around town 500s are definitely more calm and relaxing to ride. Speaking out of my own experience ofcourse

I agree it feels planted and give you that big bike feel with bigger tires and comfier seats. Had a 500 it was a great bike.

Performance is virtually the same but the power delivery on these two bikes are very different. While the CBR500R has plenty of torque in the low to mid rpm range, it doesn't have a whole lot of hp in the top RPM's. It kind off dies down and leaves the sporty rider wanting for more. The MT-03 on the other hand only starts making torque in the mid range, and the bike only starts to feel alive when you wring it's neck. Two years ago I was stuck choosing between a CBR500R and a Ninja 400. I like the looks of the Honda A LOT better, the ergonomics fit me better etc. I ended up choosing the ninja 400 because it's just a nicer bike when you want a sporty ride. Plenty of torque in mid range, lively in the top RPM range and a good bit lighter as well.

The 500 is more relaxed on freeway speeds. The 300 MT buzzed at 8500 rpm at 80 mph. In town, the MT short gearing requires lots of shifting but is fun and sporty rowing through the revs.

Agreed. I've owned an R3 and now a 500r. The 500R has more power readily available in the lower RPMs whereas the R3 keeps all the power up top. In stop and go traffic on the freeway, I constantly found myself downshifting for more power. With the 500, just give it a twist and the torque will do the work. So for track, an R3 would be more fun because you can rev it out. In town, 500r all day.

Ya but that's India and small displacement bikes are some people's only mode of transportation. In America bikes are usually more of a toy then people's daily so it becomes one big d**k measuring competition. Also Ive seen the videos of people riding around India on Kawasaki H2s and other big displacement bikes and they turn heads. What I don't see is people turning around to look at the scooters 🤷‍♂️

The real reason that the 500 is having just 7 hp over the mt is the A2 license its on the edge of restrictions.

The cb500 can make more power, but not that much more. Here in Brazil, where there is no A2 restriction, the cb500 makes 50.4 HP. The cb500 is a great bike, don't get me wrong (I own a 2014 cb500f and love it). But it needs to be priced competitively to the MT03, for that's its competition. It is roughly as fast as the mt03, even when the cb is in its unrestricted version.

@@babyvanta Not from what I’ve seen. Most manufacturers put all sorts of restrictions in the ECU to keep it Euro 5 compliant. I know it’s not going to be putting out 70hp or anything but I still think you could get some nice 5-10hp gains throughout the RPM’s just like any other modern motorcycle.

@@fivespeed3026 if all you're doing is changing the fuel mapping you won't see many gains on any bike. Manufacturers know what they're doing most of the time and they usually do a good job. You could maybe smooth out a few dips in the torque curve which will improve the overall ride but won't do much for power. For most people a beginner bike is just that, a bike to start on, so doing a bunch of work to it just isn't worth it because it costs money and will lower the bikes value. But if you plan on keeping your beginner bike then yeah, a 500 like the honda is a great platform for turning it into a track bike or something. You still won't be getting 80 hp but you could maybe squeeze like 10 - 12 extra horses out of it.

You can have just as much fun on a small bike as you do with a big one. Recently I went from a 102hp bike to a 47hp absolutely no regrets I have more fun with the smaller bike.

I think the Honda 500 twins strong point is the torque delivery. It has a very flat torque curve and produces 90% of its peak torque not much after 2000rpm. This makes the engine very flexible and forgiving and precise gear selection less important. The 5hundos are a largely understressed power plant that is better suited to someone who wants to do lots of highway miles during the week and still have a rip on the weekend. Think of the CBR500R as a relaxed sport tourer rather than a track weapon.

The displacement jump from the "500" to the 650 is actually larger than from the "300" to the "500". The MT-03 displaces 321cc and the CBR500R displaces 471cc, just a 150cc difference. Whereas the Z650 is nearly a true 650 (649cc), making a 178cc jump.

I never understood why manufacturers were allowed to get away with this stuff, sure for cars when it's measured in litres and, in America it could be measured in gallons, it makes sense to call anything within 50ish ccs the round number but for tiny moto engines every cc counts

My first bike was a CB500F and i ended up holding onto it several years after i had the coin to buy a triumph (which i now have). Theyre a bloody good starting bike.

How stable is that Honda cbr500r when it MAINTAINS a higher speed? I heard up at and past 75mph it plants it's weight way better and don't shake as much. Not to mention the reliability of that Honda engine (life of atleast 150,000 miles) and you don't have to rev out as much when you stay with the flow of traffic. I seen a lot of "track guys" bash the hell out of the cbr500r during reviews as they analyze the price but if you buy one two years back with no miles on it (brand new 2018 model now) you can usually get a cbr500r for $4500 to $5000 and Honda haven't changed the bike that much in the last two years. The #1 bike people like to compare/contrast the cbr500r to is the Ninja 400 because the Ninja 400 can move faster from 0 to 60 so people usually pick the Ninja 400 over the cbr500r. But people don't usually favor a cbr500r based on speed, Besides the cbr500r being a really great looking bike, they get it because it's a solid, reliable commute bike with a hell of a lot gas mileage (60 to 75mpg for the cbr500r is outstanding) plus it doesn't shake at higher speeds when it's staying with the flow of traffic. How many guys do you see often say that with 300cc bikes they feel less safe on the highway because they feel too rev'd out once they get to a decent rate of speed and why the hell would you want to buy something you know you're gonna sell later or trade out of anyway? Some people have different outlook on buying a BEGINNER bike but if I had to pick the most solid "BEGINNER BIKE" for COMMUTE that you're way more likely to keep as an additional bike as an additional bike for added mpg and "not trade out of" or re-sell later on, I'd definitely pick the cbr500r (bought new 2 years back or USED with very few miles on it).

I'm not a sport bike person, but what I will say is everything you just said is exactly why I'm getting the Rebel 500. Perfect for the commute, great gas mileage, will last years in all weather and enough power for the odd journey on the motorway. I don't need anything else. Yes, a big cruiser would be nice later as a pure sunny weekend toy, but for anything else a 500 to 650cc engine is easily enough

On my CB500F, I've ridden the interstate at sustained 80+ MPH on multiple occasions, with a couple of times hitting up into the 90's. The bike's speedo (actually both of my recent Hondas) are within 1-2% of the GPS when using Google Maps on 2 different phones. The bikes are geared a little short (for city commuting purposes I suppose), but any of the CB500/Rebel500 bikes would be a good bike for occasionally hopping on the I-40, compared to anything smaller/lighter.

Most people can't afford more than one or two motorcycles at a time currently so their outlook on a bike goes something like this: starter bike for cheap, trade it for a good all around bike (ie a middleweight naked or adv) then when that's paid off get one for fun (sport, dirt, touring). I'd love to have kept my little 250 honda that I started on but it just wasn't in the budget. And that's the main downfall of the 500s, they don't provide nearly the value of the 300 class. Yes they are more planted and stable on highways, but since most people will only have their beginner bike for a little while it's just not worth $1-3k to have a bit more of a stable, comfortable ride. If you can afford to keep your first bike, or only want one to commute with, or maybe your commute is mostly on highways then yeah I'd understand getting a 500. But it's rare that anyone meets any of those conditions. If you plan on starting with a small displacement bike the 300s are just better value for the vast majority of people.

We south east asian could never relate the term "small bike" on these 300 if not the 500. Here, a 250 too fast for the road, even a 150 is decent to go highway at 60-75mph

@@ignaciorudloff1520 South east Asian here. I would actually say it's the sheer amount of traffic. There's probably the same amount of motorcycle as cars on the road at where I'm staying, most of them mopeds (think honda super cubs) between 100-150cc. the 150cc mopeds would be able to do 75mph easily, they probably weight between 200-250lbs. 250/300 are considered to be entry into "big bike" territory. And in Indonesia/Malaysia, anything over 250 would involve more tax and/or different license.

@@ignaciorudloff1520 hmm I'd say that the stock standard motorcycle isn't far off the rest of the world, but enforcement are weak. A lot of illegal mods for 150cc bikes, increase bores and strokes, new engine block, intakes exhausts ecu, and with lightened parts you're looking at 100-120kg machines dyno 24hp at the wheel. Typical men weight 50-70kg here and you can probably do the math...

@@lexroet1215 all the old 500's used to make 60hp gpz500s cb500s etc not 600/4 power but still not bad. Loved my 1989 gpz500s in red/white with the 16" wheels. Looked better than the later one. DOCH liquid cooled 8valve was cutting edge in 1986.

Both of these bikes also had the a2 licence restrictions in mind, you dont have to restrict either of them on a2 (even though the cbr500 is on the limit) where as the mt07 and cbr650r have to be restricted to be a2 legal, like the ninja 650 too 👍 Basically as spite said the cbr may have a bigger engine but it isn't so highly tuned to rev out so have a similar output (and hondas are expensive in america but actually pricedpretty competitively here in the uk)

Yams you can hate all you want but I love the Honda cb500f. It got plenty of power for a new rider. Its more comfortable and feels more premium than any other starter bike out there. And has good torque and fuel economy. The only reason this bike only makes 47hp is so it’s A2 compliant. Which doesn’t matter here in the US. I’ve seen cbr500rs with a tune and exhaust make 58hp to the wheel. The potential is there, it’s just not utilized for us here in the states

I don't understand why people think you will keep a smaller cc bike for only 8 months to a year. How about just as long as you would keep a bigger cc bike. Why do everyone want something bigger and faster and the speed limit in the us on highways ranges for 55-75.

Certainly in the uk when they moved the age up to 24 and then recently you have to pass your big test on a 600. The 500 and lower cc are mainly aimed at the sub 24 year old.

Idk Yam, I've got a cbr500r, rearsets and clipons for sportier ergos, decat and lowered the front triples for better tipin. And I run laps around 300s at our local track. The extra torque really helps on the drive out of corners. And the extra weight isn't really noticable once I adjusted the geometry.

And according to google etc, the cbr500r does 70mg whereas the yam r3 (which would be a fairer equivalent than the mt03 in terms of sport bike styling) does less than 50mpg. Correct or wrong?

Couldnt agree more with the point made at 7:03 I too am a larger dude (6'1" 225lbs) and am relatively new to bikes and do mostly in town riding (25mph-50mph). So bikes like the CBR500R are perfect bikes for me.

The Honda CBR500R is not sports bike but more a sports tourer as it has 17.1 litre tank vs MT03 with 14.0. So for US it’s better touring mileage and more comfortable for taller riders without having to rev it hard all day. MT03 is fun but I would prefer the 500 for the longer highway rides.

That may be a good comparation in US but in Europe it's not. Those bike are made for those with a2 license. In Europe you can get the A driving license at the age of 24 or after you had A2 license for at least 2 years . From my point of view Honda it's the winner: better quality, more stable, more reliable, comfortable, more than enough power to play with while you learn to ride and lower fuel consumption.

Does that apply in every part of Europe? I live in Spain and I just recently got interested in riding motorcycles and have yet to get my license. I'm 23 and will be 24 in a couple of months. I always heard about this, but whenever I search on the internet, there are never any results saying that this is true... maybe it's not the same?

@@josephmichael4219 The guy that replied to you is wrong, it is absolutely *not* the same in all of Europe. The licence classes A1, A2 and A are the same but the ages are decided by the country as long as A1 is 16 or more, A2 is 18+ and full A is 20+. Best thing is to ask a school in your country who will know the actual answer, not some random person on KZfaq.

Just focusing on displacement while ignoring cylinder count and configuration. "The 500 class" was around well before the ninja, even if we're talking modern era sportbikes. I'm going to ride my interceptor 500 with 69(nice)hp and 12k rpm redline.

i had a ninja 300 for a while. it was great riding alone on back country roads but on the busy freeway i was almost run off the road by a van i had trouble accelerating away from, and almost run down in the city by a honda i had trouble pulling away from

I had a 2015 CB300F and now a 2005 GS500F. I haven't found a huge difference either except that the GS500F takes on the highway MUCH better. I like getting out on just some highway cruises and it DEFINITELY has a noticeable difference. That being said I missed the nimble nature of the 300 and also better brakes... From my experience I would definitely say its an upgrade but don't get them new... Just buy a used 500. Unless you stay in the city mostly then the newer 300 class offers more stuff like ABS and better handling. I do miss my 300, if I'm only commuting the highways the 300 is nice.

Like you mentionned, the CB500R would be better for bigger people than the MT-03. Power to weight ratio, they're both pretty close. As far as price wise, it's normal to see a higher price on the CBR500R for several reasons: fit &finish, roomier, more stable on Hwy's because of its weight, its longer wheelbase. its larger tires and its "full fairings" which also add to the cost. BTW, my girlfriend has a 2019 CB500F and she likes it a lot even if she's had many bikes way more powerful (CBR600RR "road & track", GSX-R600 "road & track", FZ6, FZ6R(2), SV650(2), FZ-07). I also have a 2019 R3 to enjoy when riding with the girlfriend on some rural roads with nice curves even with more than 40 years experience on road & tracks and more than 800,000 km in North America (US & Canada) and one trip in Europe. Ps. I still have a 2020 MT-10 & a 2018 GSX-S1000F to ride and for the first time in many years, I don't have a track bike in 2021 but I may do one or two track days on the MT-10. I picked up a CBR500R as a replacement for my aging 5th gen VFR. I’m a big dude like Spite so the slightly roomier 500 vs 300 is a good thing for me. The VFR was awesome for highway riding, but I would much rather take twisty back roads and the VFR is a pig weighing 100lbs more than the 500 and you feel it riding around town or on tight technical roads. I’ve ridden pretty much every configuration of sport bike from 1000cc to 250cc and I think the 500R is a great middle ground for a commuter and weekend backroad runs. It’s typical Honda quality, it’s predictable with handling, and very forgiving to rider input errors. It’s vanilla like most Honda bikes, but as I get older the thought of splatting on the road at 130mph seems less and less appealing. There’s fun to be had on this bike, and you can give it the beans without losing your license. I do agree with your point about the bike being way overpriced though, it really should be closer in price to the Ninja 400.

300 and 500 cc are mostly a2 license (europe max 35 kw) while 600/650 cc are full a license. That is what makes these bikes quite similar on hp and (raw)performance.

I think people don't talk enough about mid and low range when comparing HP and torque figures. If I'm in top gear and I want to pass someone, I'm sure the CBR500 would have more low end grunt and acceleration than the MT03 that needs to be above 7k rpm to make the same power. Open the throttle vs. downshift AND open the throttle

Had a CBR500R it’s a great bike. It’s the same argument I have with other guys in my country where the Yamaha R25 is popular: why would you get a 500 that has the same top speed as a 250? It’s not all that. The things on paper you need to consider too are built quality and reliability. The 500 is a bike that is undertuned so you’re never really pushing the engine and I’ve hit top speed it’s so stable I feel it could do with a bit more power. It’s comfier over long distance, more planted and Honda quality is unbeatable. But if I was 18 years old, I wouldn’t listen to myself lol

America had the flaccid Ninja 250 @ 36hp / 375 lb wet in the 80s and 90s. Meanwhile Australia and Japan had RGV250s @ 62hp / 345lbs wet. Best beginner bike ever

If I remember right, there're something with the stock cams in the Honda 471cc that can't handle the higher rpms that are required to reach the power it could achieve. For a P-twin it has a low redline. The motor could easily be improved to fix this but then it wouldn't be A2 compliant. What you end up with is relatively good low end grunt for a P-twin A2 bike.

Small bikes like the ninja 250 have their place as a good commuting bike for city/backroads. Winding backroads with lots of corners, even going 40mph feels pretty nice. I ride both my Ninja 250 and Yamaha Zuma 125 on these roads and only need to get to 50mph, but I often go 60mph on either bike. This kind of riding is really fun for a lot of people like me.

Don't forget about us riders who are of a certain age and in the process of downsizing. It's personal of course but for me at 55, currently riding a V-Strom 650 the CB would appeal for being smaller & lighter but still a "grown-up" bike, by which I mean comfortable enough and capable of long distances. The MT-03/RC390/390 Duke/Tracer 300, etc. I'd find a bit too frantic/high revving and not really very suitable for longer distance riding. Most of us would probably be less concerned about the price difference than younger riders and more likely to buy a bike outright than take a PCP deal...

You know I all ways wanted a Honda cbr 500r but I couldnt get it at the time also I was underage but I got my fathers old gs when I I got my license he gave me his old gs and after riding it for about a couple of months now I still want the honda cbr 500r but I mean I love my gs It was the first bike I ever owned but like lord yammie says add the number of bikes you own +1 so... but yeah love going off road on my gs but it would be nice to have a full road bike but ADV bikes are still pretty epic!

learned how to ride on a ninja 250, picked up a ninja 500 a couple years ago and now its turbocarged, also have an aprilia rsv mille but i still take the 500 out once in a while. i think everyone should own a super simple to work on and modify bike like the ninja 500. perfect to learn how to ride and how to work on bikes and crazy easy to make it your own

My first season riding. About 2500 miles from July to now, bike is a 2020 ninja 400 ABS. I plan on keeping it for at least 2 more seasons. If I wanted to go to a zx10r, R1, or an RSV4 would that be fine to jump from 400 to a bike like that? Thanks. I did take the MSF last year.

Got the cb500x and I love it. Yes, sometimes you feel the need for more power but I think that will be the case with any bike once you start to get used with it. What I don't like is the way it leans on the corner as it's the X version.

I like this format Yamm!!! just one thing. when you compared the acceleration between R3 and cbr. do them together aka a race. just looking at 2 bikes revving. no real reference.

Why put them on the track ? The CBR 500 R is a beginners bike for street use. Its a great allrounder with nice ergonomics and a cool look. R3 is the little brother of racing machines. Its basicallly made for the track and the curves and will be a mess in the streets if there is a little more traffic

well the lower rev range has its advantages in some aspects. I personally prefer the sound of a lower reving engine plus lower revs equal less vibrations and less stress on the engine plus it offers more bhp. I think a cb300x for example would be a bit of dissapointment

R3 may be a little lacking in power but makes up for cheap maintenance & flexibility as an all rounder. Engine's quite reliable, it can take all the daily abuse without any problems. Been riding mine for 5years now and it's perfect as a fun, daily ride.

The honda rides and pulls so well. Makes usable torque without making a fuse. My 500f out pulled a 700 a few weeks ago pulling a step hill. Thanks to the gearing, I might drop 1 gear as opposed to 2 or more.

Question, which do you prefer in the naked bike clash between these two bikes. Kawasaki Z400 or the Honda CB 500F. I am up there in my years and I would still love to ride a bike again but I don’t want anything too heavy or too fast. I love your videos and I value your advice. I am 5 11”and I weigh 175 pounds.

Have a 2013 Ninja 300 as my modern road bike. At 5'8" it fits me like a glove. As a classic roadracer, I don't need more than 110MPH on a road bike. Effortless cruising at legal speeds. On track days vice-free good handling and adequate brakes. Of course passed on straights but late braking and fast cornering makes it competitive to many bigger sports bikes. Only time I've wished for better suspension was when touring the Isle of Man Mountain Course. I like the lack of low end torque which makes it similar to my old RDLC and Manx. Though enough low end power for a beginner. The modern 500 class bikes are a bit overweight for my taste.
