These engines are truly reliable when the taken care of appropriately. 3k intervals are a bit extreme (I do 5k, which every single turbo vehicle should be serviced at), but cheers for actually maintaining it. The plastic guides are not the problem, the problems were the tensioner and the ridiculous service intervals BMW service centers recommended. The guides and chains were updated along with the tensioner. The new guides and chains are over-engineered components.
@LightSpinAngler6 күн бұрын
Are you aware if I can swap to the newer chains, guides and tensioner?
@andrewharter54765 күн бұрын
@@LightSpinAngler I would definitely recommend the tensioner depending on your build date. 2015 models and up typically have all the revised parts. If there is no chain whine, most likely your guides and chain are fine. The tensioner is a simple DIY job I’d recommend to do at your next oil change.

I have a 2012 F30 with 207,000 miles. I bought it used with approx. 30K. It’s been very reliable but maintained by myself meticulously - regular oil changes, misc. preventative maintenance, and more. The only “complaint” or “major” issue I’ve had is the wastegate rattle. I had to simply manually adjust the PWG and install a new arm. Oh, the one thing that upsets me is the cluster. I had to pull a fuse to stop parasitic battery drain following the temperature sensor causing an internal error. Best car ever! Looks new, runs great, and pulls! I have a charge pipe, intake, exhaust, and BootMod3 tune.

you ever needed to do timing chain or just YOLOd it? Im at 118,000 about to tune, weighing if I should change timing chain before that. Religious on 5k oil since 20k when I bough it.

3k miles oil interval is excessive. I don't think chain guides failure is related to oil... Something you're lucky. The plastic has been updated in the newer model.
@LuisGee5 ай бұрын
For older cars 3k miles was the regular oil change interval. And i do think oil comes into play with the guides. If you wait longer to change the oil, the oil doesnt lubricate the same as newer oil. It may not be the only reason why but I’m pretty sure me changing my oil at 3k miles helps alot.

Nice review of your F30 man! I have the same car in Melbourne Red. I'm looking at upgrading the ugly halogen lights. How much was your mod on that? Are those aftermarket LEDs? Was it easy to install? Coding issues afterwards? Thanks!
@LuisGee4 ай бұрын
The head lights were like $400-$450. And i had leds in them at first but then switched the bulbs to a hid. The headlights were kind of annoying to install. And i didn’t have to code anything to install the headlights but i did have to code the leds in then
@beamer13854 ай бұрын
@@LuisGee thanks for the insights. I may just go with replacing the bulbs to LEDs and not mess with the whole assembly. Getting rid of the yellow halogens goes a long way. On your lip spoiler, did you just use 3M tape to hold it down? Is it stable enough for car washes?
@LuisGee4 ай бұрын
@@beamer1385 if youre talking about the trunk spoiler then yea its just 3m tape nothing else. And its been on for like 2 years. Holds good in car washes

Just replaced my shitty halogens for bayoptik lci headlights this weekend. Man it’s worth all the money it’s expensive but it’ll make the car look so much newer.

@LuisGee2 ай бұрын
To be totally honest i don’t think the 5 series shouldve ever got the n20. To big of a car for that engine. I recommend at least getting the n55 for the 5series. But if you want to get the n20 specifically just check the car fax and make sure it was maintained.

I have drove mine from 130-230km now Did a Geabox flush, and a checkup of the timingchain, which looked fine at 175k ish Since 225k now there has been squeaking from the belt in the front of the engine bay, which goes louder after a ride it like you stole it session Any suggestions what to do? Thought it was the cold weather, but its summer weather now and still going on the same. The coolant is also going 115-120 C degrees hot while the weather is hot here

@@LuisGee Yeah! Do you also have weird startups every now and then, where RPMs drops pretty far down after startup before stabilising after 10-15 sec?
@LuisGee2 ай бұрын
@@JayMuthaFknC i actually don’t bro. You can try cleaning your maf sensor and see if that helps. Or if you have never replaced your intake inlet pipe check that. Because if there is any type of leak in the intake system it can cause rough idle
