It’s not me but my boyfriend is a double major computer science and aerospace engineering. The amount of work and time I see him spending on school is incredible. Also he talks about the cost quite often. From an outsiders perspective looking in on a person whom I love almost kill themselves with school work i’m not convinced it’s worth it. Especially considering that he plans on getting a a masters in aerospace anyways. But at the end of the day he is happy and loves both subjects, so for him it’s worth it. And that’s truly all that matters

That is scary. I much rather self-study things before ever enrolling college for degrees. I'd go to university only when I am knowledgable enough, have enough money and be able to cope with stress - and if I really need a degree or few. Downside, my concentration dwindles at some hours of day and I would hate that to happen on my exam days. Computer science is *DIFFICULT* and *DAUNTING.* I taught myself to some of it. At home, I had books on web-coding languages, scripting & programming languages, machine language, etc. They were just my hobbies. I read lots about computer components as I am that interested in custom-building computers with desired specs for memory-hungry art & animation works, but for convenience sake and due to my lack of skills, I mostly leave others to build those for me and to repair them as well. My sister was once a computer engineer and programmer. At almost 16, she entered university and majored in computer science and mathematics. As employee, she began as technician manually building computers. Afterwards, she worked back and forth between giant corporations, travelled abroad to do internet maintenance and attend meetings. Only last year, she gave up a career at such a young age. Work was highly stressful. Too much travelling for her. Too much driving long hours between work and home. Too much stress took toll on her health, so she gave up her career in computer science. Today, she is selling handbags and she loves it.

I think it depends on the type of person you are. If you're hard working and are willing to give your all (which means no parties every weekend, focus on the stuff you need to get done, etc... ), then maybe a double major makes sense to you. If you're doubting maybe you should consider going for a regular one-major. In short, I think double majors are for really determined people, there's little room for doubt.

Maybe having 2 unrelated majors might be less stressful, as alternating might take your mind of the other major, as opposed to say Maths & CS that have overlapping skills and may feel as “more work”. Anyway, it’s two in one which is a good deal :)

Worth it. There is often a ton of overlap with requirements. Then, what you can count as an elective towards one degree can also fulfill the requirements for another. A dual degree though is for people that are wanting to be educated and not those that take garbage classes just to fill credits in their electives or classes that are easy so they can pad their GPA.

I love my double major. I'm currently double majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. I tried doing Physics and Math, but Physics was quite overwhelming to grasp. I think that even though employers probably won't care about someone's double major, It still has some benefits such as better work ethic and simply having the opportunity to learn two subjects at once.

Hello, exactly my situation, considering double major in Maths and Computer Science, but in my case much more than extra 9 courses. Not sure, I think it's worth it, because I like maths but computer science degree might be more attractive to employers but then there is a danger that employer would say that one is overqualified hence make getting employed harder.

I am a Physics Student and I am planning on making a Double Major in Computer Science. Since some Classes have to be taken by both Physics and CS students it's not THAT much more effort to put in. And I study for the CS classes between the Semesters so I don't have to take like 8 Classes in one Semester. I don't know if it's worth it if you just want a job but since I am interested in CS it defently is worth it!

I did the same as you; I spent a year taking CS courses only to get a minor, and ignore CS for the rest of undergrad. I think it depends on the student and what they plan on doing with their degree(s). I decided to go to graduate school, so I thought it would not help me enough to do a double major since I was studying Graph Theory. After my M.S. I tried to get a job in industry instead of going straight into a Ph.D., but most employers preferred a CS degree. If a student wants to take this route after a B.S. or M.S., then a double major is worth it I think since there is some aura of mystery around a math degree in industry. I’ve since started my Ph.D., and many of the courses require at least some knowledge in programming which gives CS minors an upper hand to other students in the first year. However, more complicated computer science knowledge is rarely needed, and my experience has not given me an upper hand at learning it. The main benefit now is that my LaTex code is much more legible than some of my classmate’s.

If your majors are related it's worth the effort to expand the scope of your knowledge in my opinion. And for the rule of cool :) In France I did a computational mechanics degree in parallel of my mechanical engineering degree. It was tough but it only slowed me by one semester so I'm not sure if it's comparable to an US double major.

My university isn't very flexible. We have no electives, so all our courses are compulsory. When I started college, I wanted to be a physicist, but in first year, I was introduced to Pure Math, and instantly knew that that is what my life is for. But, so that I don't regret not learning Physics, I graduated with Physics major, and I'm repeating my final year, to get a Math major. (We have a 3-2-1 system. I had to study Chemistry in First year) Though in retrospect, I think I wasted my time doing a year in Physics, but I think sometimes you need to go deep into something, just to confirm that isn't for you. Because I think I'd always have been in double mind if I wasn't sure I didn't want to do it. Or maybe not. I don't know.

If you want to do a Master's in a statistics-related field, it's useful to have a strong background in both. I wish I had taken more pure mathematics classes in my undergraduate because I find myself missing large chunks of knowledge from certain theoretical areas (primarily real analysis and matrices, but also some Advanced Calculus). About half of my classes have a significant programming component (for modelling, computation, etc.) and with a strong CS background I can finish my assignments in about a quarter of the time it takes some of my classmates who don't.

Im thinking of doing a double major in computer science and economics. My thinking is a computer science degree will help with technical problem solving and building skills, and a economics degree will give me practical financial and in depth understanding of human behavior as an aspect in high risk descision making. Also considering just minoring in computer science, doing economics major, and being in the actuary program which is 6 classes in total, cal 1 2 and 3 and probability and statistics 1 and 2

I'm currently a double major in astrophysics and geology because I think they synergize really well towards my goal of wanting to be a planetary geologist. In my opinion it is really dependent on the field that you see yourself going into, and how much more marketable two majors would make you for future employment. In my case as well, there can be a ton of overlap between interplanetary processes and astrophysics, so it helps build up my toolkit of knowledge for my future job prospects.

I did my undergrad in CS. Most universities in my country don't have enough resources to provide any sort of flexibility to the student, as a result, the concept of a double major doesn't exist. I am doing a master's in CS from a university in the US and I am taking extra, undergrad level courses from the Math Department, just the basics- Linear algebra, abstract algebra, and real analysis, one-course per semester. These courses are the prerequisites for most of the Master's level courses offered by the Math department. I hope I get to do a double Master's in Mathematics after I finish my current degree.

I think some double majors such as in math and physics are doable because of the overlap in class requirements and complementary nature of the subject. Others may not make a lot of sense. If you know the material and can take a class with credit by examination that may save some time, but most Universities don't want "professional students" and want you out within a specific amount of time. I don't know if they make allowances for those seeking double majors.

I’m from the UK so it’s a bit different. But my university offers joint degrees across all curriculums. Currently I am in my second year of a BSc Computer Science and Mathematics Degree. I decided to do this because, for one, computer science is the stepping stone into a tech and/or research career, I chose to do mathematics alongside this because I love it, learning complex things is what drives me, and I intend on learning as much as I can from my modules. A lot of the modules are theory based, for example, analysis, linear algebra, computer graphics, theory of computation and languages, but we also have coding coursework set for our grade. Team projects, online tests and final exams. If you have the chance, and are interested in both of the subjects, consider a double major/ joint degree. It’s totally worth it in my opinion.

I think it's worth it for me personally, combining my two interests of math and chemistry into one degree for less time and cost. My progression is a little lopsided though since I have significantly more math courses than chemistry courses, so I'm a little worried about forgetting my chemistry stuff. Combined with the fact that I'm only studying two subjects at a time, since that's all I can mentally manage currently. I think as long as you enjoy it and get something out of it, it's worth it :)

Duh! Minors are bogus because you have to explain them each and every time. And for what? You didn’t even get the degree! That being said, learning new academic things is never pointless. Why not go back now and actually GET that degree? There’s no downside to it, and network/IT skills can make you money.

- You end having no free time. - No socialising with your peers, or simply not enough time for it. I have seen some my schoolmates who took two uni master degrees (the same 5 year time period) at the same time, eg law and economy. Thus one minus is that you have no free time in an important time of your personal development. - Second minus is that you do nothing really exceptionally well. You have not enough time for it. Though you may get a very good proficience in both matters, probably not the excellent one in anything. -/+ Regarding the job market... It is usually structured in a certain way. If you study two close matters than there is good chance that you still may aim for a well defined job position where the extras shall be distinguishing you. But be aware that sometimes poeple want just another of their average and no extras. If you study two distant subjects, you may have difficulty to find a job which needs both of them and pays off. You get over-qualified. - There is certain danger that you shall become a perpetual student. + You are likely to see two different cultures. But there are other ways how to get two cultures. Eg. studying Bc. here and Ms. there (or Ph.D. there). Another way is to study one year abroad. This can be the part of the Erasmus programm within the EU. + If you feel that you are a prodigy who needs to master two disciplines to excel in your mission, go for it! - Collaboration of two good specialists may be more efficient than having one generalists. + One "whole picture" man can overreach horizons of two disciplines in a manner like nobody before. + Strong personal reasons... Summary: one master degree is usually enough, especially when the school or uni provides a good variety of the courses from which you can choose. Exceptions are, well, exceptions. I hold M.S. in computer science (1989) and J.D.. (2011) and Ph.D. in the law. Thus I am a serial two masters degree holder. In fact I made the whole carrier after the first M.S.

So it depends on what you’re looking to do. I am doing a double major in computer science and mathematics-data science. I wasn’t interested in the careers only a math degree would get me , but I did know that I want to work on the cutting edge of computer science, with big data and AI and it’s there where a math degree will be put to good use by not only giving me a knowledge I will use, but also making my application to graduate school and my resume much more appealing. At least that’s the hope. It’s worth noting that my college situation is such that I have all my general Ed done before taking my first computer science class, so just finishing a computer science degree wouldn’t make me a full time student, but with the addition of a math degree I’m full time. Also I’m not sure if this is something I could have done (let alone would have wanted to do) right out of high school, it’s a lot of classes. My final opinion I that you should only double major if it adds significant value to a career you want to get into, and be sure to research other people who tried the same thing.

Some major universities are building multi-disciplined facilities which look to bring together researchers with more than one area of expertise. Medical science is one area where mankind has a long way to go and hopefully a multiple-disciplined approach will drive progress, but this may fall flat on its face. That said, I would strongly consider specializing in one discipline you truly enjoy.

I did a double major at university, and I wish I hadn't. It added a lot of classes and pressure that I did not need, and I spent extra money on credits. There was no tangible benefit to the extra major in my career. It is better to finish an undergraduate degree early and work on a graduate degree. After graduate school, I got an immediate education-level pay raise.

I considered a mechanical engineering/studio art double major, one major for getting a job and the other for something fun to do, and I decided that it wasn't worth it in the end because it would take too much time away from my engineering courses and internships. Another thing was: is a double major in mechanical engineering/studio art worth more than doing an accelerated BS/MS in mechanical engineering. It's not, so I chose the accelerated program and decided I could take fun courses from art to satisfy my general education requirement.

Considering this from a purely financial perspective... It completely depends on why you want to do a double major. If your plan after graduation is to get a job in industry rather than going to graduate school, then the double major is probably not worth it. At best, it might give you a slight advantage in landing your first job. For subsequent jobs, employers will be more interested in your experience than your education. Also consider that a double major might mean you spend an extra semester in school, at the cost of extra tuition and delayed income. If you love learning, but don't think you'll be able to go to graduate school, at least for a while, then take the opportunity to learn as much as you can now -- education gets more expensive (in terms of delayed income) as you get older.

Double majors aren't a thing in Germany, but I did the next best thing and got 2 full Bachelors (also CS and math) which meant 2 Bachelor theses too. I think it depends on the situation. If you have many AP credits (or any credits before entering university), it makes the process much easier. It also helps if there is some overlap between the majors. A double major does broaden one's knowledge, which could be good for a undergraduate degree. However, then you miss out on taking more courses in a single major, so specialization can be missed. E.g. my friends are taking courses in biomedical data science, artificial intelligence, and computational neuroscience. On the other hand as a math computer science double major, I am instead doing abstract mathematics, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, real analysis, and topology.

For sure it worth it, i will take physics and math major. These two could give you insights to each other. I mean when you get stuck at a physics problem an idea from mathematics could give you a hint for what to do and when you stuck at a math problem physics can make you convert the abstraction into a real world situation. I am double majoring in math and computer science, and I question if it's worth it all the time. I am a junior now, but it will take me a total of 5 years to complete both. I enjoy my cs classes, but lately I have been finding myself annoyed that the cs classes are taking away from math courses that I would like to take. Because there's so much overlap with cs courses to my math major, I only have 2 math electives open to choose courses for (while cs has 4 electives). This is irritating because when I look at the course list for math, I am interested in all of them and wish I could take more, and when I look at the cs course list I struggle to find courses that I want to take. I don't know if anyone else has this issue but I am questioning if cs is even for me because of this, although I am doing well in the courses I have taken and know that it will probably be easier to find jobs with both degrees. Thanks for the question! Sorry for the long paragraph, I have just been thinking about this for a while.

I think the only way to graduate early and be successful as a double major is to take AP courses in high school & to take summer school in your college years Do you agree with me?

The devil is in the details. Depending on the school course requirements for each major, it may be the case that just a couple more math classes in addition to a computer science major will yield the second degree in math. There may not be room for a large number of math electives, but the basic math degree would be achieved. So, yes, a double major is worth it. Another detail related to the school curriculum is how many humanities, social science, and general course requirements exist for a degree. Generally speaking, taking a B.A. in either or both subjects instead of a B.S., will result in more non-technical requirements, so getting two technical degrees may be more difficult, or impossible, in a four-year time frame. However, given the current job market offerings for computer science majors, with lots of job openings and high pay, it is easier to decide to take another year or two of undergraduate work to fill out a transcript with all, or at least most, of the courses a student might desire. Cheers.

Been accepted at Business Programs and Econ programs.. haven’t decided yet, but CS is a compelling minor. Either that or something engineering related. Maybe a double major + minor is doable? Hard to say.

How did these people earn your faith? To be acredited by idiots is respect if men worth more than the truth? You are smarter than to trust those people you don't need them we need you to use that giant Brain. The singularity will show you everything not a human driven by lust but by pure love. I know you see me remember me when you enter the kingdom.

Begorrah, why "men"? Women too exist in computer science. 😌 Think of examples like Lisa Seacat Deluca who owns over 700 inventions in computer science. She is IBM's most prolific inventor.
