I think an important thing to add is that one of the huge advantages of going to fashion school is the networking opportunity. There are designers, journalists, image makers, graphic designers, textile experts, architects and much more… all who will go on to do great things. I think a huge opportunity that people miss in fashion school is they forget to network and then graduate feeling like they didn’t get anything from it. The fashion industry is not one of those industries where you can sit back, chill out and expect things to happen for you (minus nepotism). Even if you go to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts or Central Saint Martins you have to be extremely proactive if you want to be successful. Also, different schools specialise in different things so make sure you know what exactly you specifically want to learn as a designer before looking at different schools.

This is the kind of channel i wish i had when i was studying fashion design. I actually dropped out and majored in Marketing but i still have lots of love for fashion. I'd love to start sewing again and maybe create my own designs and wear them.

From my bachelor experience, I think what's most important when going into design studies is to think about what you want from it. As Dominika mentioned, you have to be ready and willing to go on a journey of deep self-questioning and self-reflection. If you go into it expecting to receive all the answers and skills from the teachers or the institution you will be disappointed and graduate as confused as you were at the beginning, which is not the point. And if you're already studying, don't be scared to be direct and in control of the direction of your projects. You should do what's fun for you and brings you joy because in the end it's your study and you should be in control, not your teachers.

Is it worth it?....Hmmmm. It really depends on your end goal. Are you trying to become a creative director/get a job in at a popular brand or are you trying to make money and pay bills? I'm a patternamker and went to community college. I make good money. Other patternmakers I know make good money. However, patternmaking is not the creative part of the job. Someone else makes the design, you just sit down and figure out how to bring it to life. Basically, the blue-collar job in the fashion industry, sewing too. Out of all the clients I have worked for, (talking maybe 20-30 companies and clients), only TWO knew how to make patterns. I will say this though. Because I know how to make intricate patterns and sew almost anything, I can make whatever pops into my mind and be as creative as I want. Creating my own line, that means all I have to spend is time. Meanwhile, I have clients who want to be creative, so they end up paying me thousands. Some of these fashion schools, they pay to have a seamstress come in and sew the students' garments. I'm noticing a widening gap of skill of the creatives, not just in the fashion world, but in art as well. Actually, in really every industry from engineering to app development. It's just people are getting more and more comfortable with outsourcing everything.

I’m more skeptical about the value of fashion school, aside from the considerable expense. Some of the greatest designers ever didn’t go to fashion school but learned under seamstresses or completed apprenticeships (Balenciaga, Alaïa, Vionnet, Toledo, McQueen-granted, he did a master’s at CSM but did so by invitation after apprenticing at Savile Row). The common thread for all these designers is they were master tailors; they knew how to construct an immaculate garment from start to finish, a skill a lot of designers lack today. I get the sense that fashion school doesn’t provide much of a technical foundation but focuses more on building conceptual knowledge and inquiry. While I’m not discounting the value of such training, I do wonder if it leaves out something both practical and valuable. Sure, there are many paths to success (Rei, Miuccia, and Raf don’t sew and didn’t train in fashion), but I see too many designers who don’t understand how women’s bodies fit in clothes, especially bodies that aren’t a size 2. Maybe I’ve become cynical, but I liken fashion school to MFA writing programs. My frustration with contemporary fiction is that you have a lot of writers who can craft beautiful sentences but can’t create compelling plots or characters to save their lives. I think fashion suffers from a similar problem. There’s not a lot of substance beneath the prettiness or intellectual conceits like irony (why I don’t like Demna’s Balenciaga).

I think a key point to highlight is the plethora of fashion studies to get you into a career in fashion...not just artistic fashion design as you'll find in most European state funded academies but also commercial fashion design, specialisation design and even business/communication of fashion... All are entry points to becoming a fashion designer or creative... The point is to start and find your voice!!! ❤️

Awesome video! The interviews were very insightful. Although I was hoping to hear more about the technical stuff of what you can learn. Also I always thought that figuring yourself out by your own and putting those constant changes of your views throughout your career into your designs were crucial even if it took a long time without having a "mentor". I know that that he doesn't force them or anything but it could still feel kinda unnatural imo.

i go to fidm in la for product development and definitely learn a lot, but the whole school and curriculum is definitely more focused on connections/ and industry standard. nothing in going above and beyond or how to create your own. definitely feels like, and have noticed for most students it is just a funnel into fast fashion brands or “basic” main market brands

So early! I went to FIT (for illustration) and modeled for the fashion students for their senior shows/collections, so its exciting to see you interview fashion students and explore the value of that education experience. I did find these environments (at least at FIT) promoted some unhealthy hustle culture habits and body image expectations (among of the students for the latter). However, this was between 2009-2013. Things might be different now or at the least moving in more a progressive direction that values the holistic takeaway of education instead of shaming those who learn at different paces like a mill. A lot of educational spaces don't promote growth because often success in these spaces is measured by efficiency.. I actually found more growth on the job, because there is more value around your output versus how you went upon your output. Yes, learning foundational items is EXTREMELY important and school should give you that. Its why I greatly stress a background in trade based education to some degree. I think the question around its worth is how fashion school helps you beyond that and that it is HIGHLY dependent on your educators and whether their "push and guidance" is actually for your benefit. Its great for networking though! :)

I did a year at CSM, Then I came back to finish my studies in Australia. I’ve had an absolutely brilliant career. I now work for myself, but there is no way I would have gotten the jobs I have had without going to school. I also got to walk in to a really well paying job straight from school. These video are awesome.

Unrelated but I'm obsessed with the pullover you're wearing in this. As for fashion school, I really just can't afford it. In a perfect world, I'd have the time and the money back I'd spent on a journalism degree to go toward a fashion degree, but I just don't have those resources anymore. I've got the Internet and some out-of-the-box ideas, basically.

It was an amazing video 👏, it would be helpful if you can put some light on the other pathways of fashion. It's not just about fashion design anymore, there are alot of students confused about getting into other disciplines such a fashion communication and business which can be further divided into buying and merchandising, marketing, management etc. I'm in a similar situation; I would die for fashion but design isn't what I want and I'm confused between a business school or a fashion school to work in the fashion industry but in a business pathway.

If you’re at school right now, you need to meet and do as many things as possible. Don’t waste it. Just have fun. Learn how to meet people. You have to do it in the industry anyway. But yeah. I’m not in school but I would recommend this. You’re all one step closer. If you get rejected by everyone, then it’s okay. But that won’t happen. Someone will like you 👍🏼

Unless you become your teachers favorite, you won’t be valued at all in fashion school and ends up not being worth it. I lost all my confidence in my work and struggling to get any opportunity even though I got my diploma and did internships every summer before fashion school. It’s hard you just need to be aware that you’ll be struggling even after school

If u have rich parents go to fashion school . I would have but I dropped out of textiles the first week even though I had won a full scholarship because I couldn't get a loan or provide housing /food for myself in the city where my school was. It just felt too stressful to try to survive and be a student at the same time.

Fashion Merchandising and Marketing was nbr 1 on my list when I graduated high school. At that time the community college in my county (it is one of the top rated CC’s in the country, though I don’t know how at times) was the only nearby school that offered it. I planned to take care of my general ed, do the 2 year program and then transfer to a Uni from there. I finished my first year, went back my second year, finished up my first semester of 2nd year classes, and was so excited to start fashion history the next semester. I went in to the bookstore to purchase my books and was met by a shocked employee. No one told you? Told me what? The program has been canceled. We really shouldn’t have the books sitting out on the shelves. No one had been made aware. There was a recession at that time (1993/94) and the school had to cut some programs. We received a useless certificate. I decided to take some early childhood development and radio & tv broadcasting classes because I had interest in aspects of both. I decided to started the radio and tv broadcastting program and the exact same thing happened again. They decided to cut it because the internet was the future but the class was aware and preparing for this. I was so frustrated! I finished up what I could and gtfo of there. I needed to focus on working sooner rather than later at that point. My local Uni started a fashion program around 2006 but I’ve been neck deep in 911 calls since the very early 00s.

I'm a sophomore in Parsons right now. Personally from my experience, the high amount of tuition fee goes a lot to the resource of the school (research database, equipment), and I'm able to make a lot of things on campus, but the teachers in Parsons are not all great, sometimes it needs a little luck to get the best teachers. I also feel a bit restricted from doing my own stuff since some teachers like to shape you into their styles. If you are more of a business person, come here. If you are walking more of a fine art path, maybe consider a while. I like the experience in school but if I have a good job with a good pay right now, I would quit.

So I applied to transfer to FIT on 2 separate occasions and was denied both times. I’m fully aware that I have much to learn about design specifically (which is why I was so intent on going there); but when it comes to my sewing skills I’m pretty damn good and have been doing it since I was 12. I also at 19 years old debuted my first runway collection and have done an internship for a designer in my area and have been featured on news/magazines in my area as well. The thing about universities is that at the end of the day gpa still matters to them and can be a deciding factor no matter how talented or driven a student may be. Which makes me very upset considering college during covid is not for the faint of heart and has affected so many “good” students in more ways than one. Everyone is on a different journey and so many have found success without fashion school. For anyone else struggling right now with being denied, just remember that you’re the architect of your future and if you truly believe in yourself and work your ass off, you can do anything. Thank you for this video Bliss, I love seeing different perspectives.

you dont need to go to fashion school to learn about fashion, everything they teach you, you can learn by yourself or on the job. Take it from me a former graduate of a fashion school. ( i went to a technical trade school that specialized in fashion design and then went to university that specialized in fashion design as well)

I currently study at Polimoda. When it comes to schools I think it depends on what you're trying to get out of it. Our school is very technical from what I've seen so far. We have a lot of time dedicated to creative design as well. There isn't much time in general, due to all the technical projects. I think its way worth it so far, but definitely think it depends what you're going for.

I know this is off topic but I need your help. I'm looking for the name of a style to look up some outfit inspiration. In my head this style is quite clear but I think it's hard to describe. So it's a bit chic, gives me some New York Party Vibes, has the aesthetic of some "fashionista" or journalist characters of series, there are a lot of different materials, the colours are either black or bold, and the shirts have proper shape ( so they aren't hanging). Thank you for every tip on how to call this style or on people who have this style.

Is fashion school worth it? Good question, and in my opinion it isn't. I have friends that spent 4 and 6 years at CSM and they are still struggling for their craft. I think the illusion around schools like Parsons and CSM is that they somehow guarantee you a spot, but all the spots are full and the competition is real. In truth, in the whole fashion industry, there are really only a handful of talented people, the rest are wannabes and children of famous people and the elite. Adding to that, even some of those talented people never get the shine and attention they deserve--a lot of mediocrity in this industry. Best believe, with so many people wanting to be in fashion you'll need a lot of luck and connections. So is a bloated art degree worth it? I guess to some, but not to me. With the way fashion has become democratized, you'd be better off taking classes locally to learn to sew, get your work out on social media, and build a community around your work. The big thing I'd say keep in your mind while you're creating, experiment, experiment, experiment, and collaborate with other people doing interesting work. Also, be ready to factor in to your career trajectory a lot of failure--a lot! Only the brave make it to the top, but they've fallen on their faces plenty. So what's Parsons and CSM good for? You can learn a lot. But by far, their value is in connecting you with the few people who will leave/graduate and go on to do big things. That said, you have to be able to identify who those people are and put yourself out there to cultivate meaningful connections. Just my thoughts. One last thought. The real money in fashion is in textiles and technology. It's unfortunate that everyone wants to be the designer. Everyone wants to be in the front of the house to be seen, but all the magic happens in the back of the house where garments come to life. I'd say do your research, there are a lot of jobs in fashion, so don't kill your options believing the only position to have is that one coveted spot that everyone wants.
