My foamy roof blew off going over a tall bridge. It was totally from negligence, I didn’t have it strapped down. It broke off the wood hinges I built and flew over 5m in too the air and crashed down on the asphalt, just a little scuffed on one corner! It is just 2 and 3mm foam with canvas bonded by 2 layers of diluted Titebond II! And canvas was only on the outside.

@bugouttrailers7964
@bugouttrailers7964 4 жыл бұрын
So far it has held up very well. I too had questions that needed answered so I figured I would use this trailer on roads that most other people would not. So I have been using it more as a off road trailer, you know the expensive ones that weigh a ton. Although not as high (yet), but I figured that would be the real test for long term durability and getting results faster. Nothing harder on a trailer than washboard/corrugated roads. It has been on many trips now with no issues. I like the simplicity of this design and that was what I was after. I wanted to show people how to make a trailer that was easy for anybody to build. It is also a test bed for other options that I have not installed yet as well as some that I have already, but are not mentioned in these videos yet. If someone was to use the trailer shown as is and it was limited to mostly road travel it should hold up just fine. If however you wanted a more off road oriented trailer there are a few mods I recommend for the trailer such as larger tires and a 2"x2" steel backbone. If you are interested you can follow along on the trips we take with and without the trailer here on my other channel kzfaq.info/love/YuRx2TBglAdNwVwZJ5oztg Hope that helps, George.

I guess technically it could be considered a composite. I use 10oz canvas on each side of the foam. The outside is wrapped in a way to create a complete wrap (sock) that is attached basically with glue to the floor. There is no wood from the floor up, just canvas and foam.

How do you connect the foam walls to the base of the trailer?
@bugouttrailers7964
@bugouttrailers7964 8 ай бұрын
on my builds I use what I call a inner frame rail. It is basically a 1"x2" that I carriage bolt to the floor similar to a base board along the inner side of the wall. The canvas on the outside comes down the wall and then goes under the floor 2". I use gorilla glue where the wall contacts the floor and the inner frame rail. This keeps everything nice and straight and tight.

Thanks! If you go to the tnttt forum and look for the foamie section there are two people building truck campers right now. They are near the top so you should be able to find them fairly easily. There is another build there that a guy did a few years ago. He checks in from time to time and says it is doing well. I think if I did a camper I would build mine as a stand alone slide in so that it was fully insulated. This Bug Out build would fit into a truck bed and could be built with the door on the back Hope these ideas help. Good luck, George.

Love the build. Can someone please explain to me what the advantages are of using the canvas versus a fiberglass covering. Thanks.
@bugouttrailers7964
@bugouttrailers7964 4 жыл бұрын
There are a few who have used fiberglass to cover their foamies. You do have to use epoxy resin though. Polyester resin will melt the foam. If you feel comfortable using fiberglass then there is nothing stopping you as long as you use the epoxy resin. Most people do not have the knowledge or want to work with fiberglass. Most people do know how to paint and install wall paper, which is a simplified way to explain the painted canvas technique.
@garethbaus5471
@garethbaus5471 2 жыл бұрын
Canvas is cheaper, and easier. Fiberglass would probably allow you to build lighter and or stronger though.
@GrantOakes
@GrantOakes Жыл бұрын
The only advantage of using canvas/titebond is cost. Fiberglass and epoxy resin is far superior in durability and strength but is more expensive. I have extensive experience in fiberglass reinforced plastics and wouldn't consider any other method. Spend the extra and end up with a better build in the end, you can thank me later.

Hey thanks so much for the videos. Been wanting to build a teardrop for a while and am very intrigued by the foamies. I like your simple design, but my only hang up is sleeping room or should I say mattress size. Do you think these same techniques could be used for a slightly wider foamie built in the same fashion as yours? Something that could fit either a full or queen size mattress.
@bugouttrailers7964
@bugouttrailers7964 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can build wider and/or taller. I made this trailer as simple as you can to get non experienced builders to feel capable of building one. I don't think you can get anymore simple than this design. My first build was a 5'x8' and has a queen sized sleeping area. It was also more teardrop in shape. Look for Build #1 Maiden Voyage and The Fall Crawl Meetup. Also, people have even made ones that you can stand in. Go to the Fomies Section on the Teardrop and Tiny Trailer (TNTT) forum for more info and help. I eventually hope to get more videos out on this build soon and then start the next project. Thanks for watching, George.

@@bugouttrailers7964 Thanks for replying. Would a 5 foot wide foamie built in this same saltbox fashion require extra bracing or gussets of some type to handle the wider span of the roof? Obviously there would be some need for joints.
@bugouttrailers7964
@bugouttrailers7964 5 жыл бұрын
@@Scaudioworks When I made my first foamie I did channel the roof pieces on the ends that I glued together. I channeled enough to fit a 1"x2" into it. This acted as a bit more bracing for the roof span and also allowed better bonding of the two pieces at the glue line. But, with that said the front portion of the trailer is curved, which adds strength to the roof and really probably only a 4 foot section of flat roof to the bulkhead after that. I have had, however, no issue with sagging. If you do not expect heavy snow loads then I think you would be fine. You could always add bracing at a later date if you find you have a issue. That is the nice thing about foamies they can easily be modified as you go. Another option is to create a slight curvature to the roof line. This adds built in strength in it's self.
