In the military full auto is used for suppressing fire just to get the enemies heads to go down. Semi-auto and burst conserve ammo and is more accurate.

Even with full auto capability in an M16, they taught us to try for 2-3 round bursts. A combat load was only 210 rounds, so you'd be SOL in a hurry spraying full auto mag dumps, and you'd miss most shots. Full auto works best in crew-served, belt-fed weapons on a bipod of tripod. It was intended for "grazing fire", and even on the M60, they instructed us to try for 6-9 round bursts.

I went to a class and the instructor shot a full auto Uzi. First mag timed and the all hits on 4 silhouette targets counted. He hit all 4 targets and out of 30 rounds only 13 hit areas that would cause damage! He then shot the same Uzi still on full auto, double tapping each target center mass. All rounds were center mass and the time was faster than the pray and spray! It was freaking amazing to see!!!

Is it practical to drive in today’s world? HELL NO!..do I drive it everyday? NOPE!…but being that I was raised in a Cadillac family, I’ve wanted that car since I was old enough to remember, and it just so happened that I accidentally stumbled across it sitting in a detached garage when I went to go meet a new client about remodeling a home that the siblings inherited, after asking to buy it, They enthusiastically said yes and now I LOVE! driving it on my days off…. Regardless of impracticality, I wish you sincere luck on that Lamborghini, and please enjoy it brother!

Completely impractical: A couple of old rules of gun fighting that you are forgetting here. 1. You can not Miss fast enough to win a gun fight. Auto fire makes it possible to miss REALLY FAST! 2. There is an Attorney attached to every round you fire. Those Missed rounds are going to hit something and you are responsible for every round fired. Colion, as an attorney, I'm really surprised that you didn't bring this up. Every missed round is a liability. Finally, the purpose of Automatic Fire is to SUPPRESS incoming fire by generating a Beaten Zone in the Area where your attack is. In a war, that is perfectly acceptable and a standard tactic. However, on the streets, or even in your home, you MUST insure that each and every shot has a specific target AND hits that target. We've seen this from bad cops like Acorn Boy and the 2 female deputies who sprayed a woman through a window just because they saw a gun in her hand. This blind firing out of fear is not justifiable under the laws of self defense.

I'm glad you made this video, especially discussing the drawbacks of automatic fire. As a combat veteran, it bugs me to no end how people call everything a "fully-automatic" weapon whether it is or isn't, and try to make the simple-minded claim that if a firearm is "fully-automatic" then it kills more people simply because it fires more rounds in a shorter period of time. It bothers me even more that no knowledgeable person ever seems to say "well, hold on a second there, you don't know what you're talking about because that's not how that works." Civilians broadly seem to assume that the M-16 and/or the M-4 is a "fully-automatic machine gun" and that soldiers in combat fire their M-16 or M-4 on full-auto, and then they conflate that with civilians having "the same gun" and that explains how these mass shooters kill so many people. The pushback always seems to invariably be "its not the same gun", but nobody ever mentions that the modern M-16 and M-4 aren't fully automatic either, they aren't "machine guns", that professional soldiers don't actually hip fire on full-auto like every action movie character ever, or that using a rifle like an M-16 or M-4 in that manner on full-auto (if it had it) wouldn't kill more enemy soldiers by virtue of shooting faster, it would just waste ammunition. In the military, actual machine guns that are full-auto, are large and heavy and they have to be in order to help absorb the recoil from automatic fire and remain relatively accurate. We don't typically use machine guns to directly engage enemy combatants for the purpose of killing them. The volume of fire from machine guns is meant to prevent the enemy from shooting back so that your riflemen can maneuver to engage and kill them with more accurate fire from semi-automatic rifles. The M-4 does have a 3-round-burst function, but you are explicitly told never to use it. Of course, I does get used occasionally and under special circumstances, but in almost every occasion, using 3-round-burst would only be a waste of ammunition because even that is too hard to control in a lightweight rifle to maintain accuracy.

Honestly, if it weren’t for the NFA, I’d love to carry a stocked, compact, full auto SMG as a backpack gun. Takes longer to get into action than my carry pistol, but gives me more firepower and range. Though I would want a stock on mine for added controllability, so a Glock with a switch that’s just a pistol might not be much use for me, but something like a P90, SMG-45 or MP5k would be fantastic.

I think you gave a pretty decent assessment of the G18 and full auto handguns in general. Beretta made the 93R which had a fold down forward grip to help control it. Seems like these guns were made to support special operations and protection details. I don’t know how much wide spread use they received. Even shoulder fired selective fire requires regular training and an ammo budget bigger than most citizens, and even many police departments have.

Turned into an anti aircraft gun after the first few rounds. When I took the Glock Instructors Workshop in the early 2,000’s the last day was all Glock 18C. What a difference between the C version and the standard. We were able to control the gun on short bursts and stay on target out to 15 yards. We also shot those guns and dunked them in a bucket of water and just kept running them. It was awesome!

Hey Colion. Hope you read this. Love your stuff, big fan. I know you've heard of the channel Active Self Protection. He did a seminar condensing his knowledge and said something powerful that resonated and stayed with me forever about self defense shootings. He said that after reviewing over 2,000 self defense shooting videos, 95% of them ended when either 1 of 2 conditions were met. Someone ran out of ammo first, or someone was hit. He also said that only 3 times out of 2,000 did he see a self defense shooting victim (you or me, essentially) reload in a gunfight versus a criminal. That statistic should be big in this discussion, because a full auto pistol will have you out of ammo really fast and a lot less likely to stop your attacker. I think personally the only effectiveness I've seen of full auto glocks is drive-by shootings and when criminals crack open their front door on cops, and that isn't something us legal gun owners really do. Just food for thought, would love to hear your feedback on this statistic.

With a 20 round or + capacity mag, if. IF. I F you can center those rounds well in full auto, you have a chance of penetrating a lvl 3a vest with 9mm ammo. Depending on the ammo, and the vest. All before the victim has a chance to pull and return fire. Or you just aim at the belt, and let the recoil ride the fire up into the face. Again, before they have a chance to draw and fire. Doesn't seem like a fair fight, does it?

Other than a general breakdown of law and order, I see no practical purpose for automatic fire as a civillian. It is one thing to use a Glock with a switch on the training ground, and another on the streets. Spraying and praying, innocent people hurt or killed, running out of ammo fast....Way too many negatives!. I could see this Glock being used up close and personnal , but even then I do not see it. There is a reason you do no tsee military or police units anywhere using Auto semi pistols. They are not practical. Sub machine guns work better. Using a pistol as a sub gun is pushing a hand gun to do a shoulder gun's work. Predictably, it falls short.

I think it’s good for gang members because you can spray a house up and it’s easier to obtain than say the components to make an ar full auto. Here's a full auto "hack" for folks that have such desire: Consider the semi auto shotgun or even the pump. Imagine it with a 6+1 capacity and loaded with 00 buck. Contained with that shotty are 7 shells with a total of 56 .33" projectiles (8 pellets per shell.) That's the rough equivalent of a rifle magazine with 56 rounds of greater then .30 cal bullets (round shot, i know, but still.) So what's the rate of fire? Firing 2 shells per second is very moderate so that's 16 projectiles per second equalling 960 rounds per minute. That's the same as a typical full auto M16. Wanna shoot fast? Legally and cheap? Get a Mossberg 500 or Maverick and load her with 00 buck.
@alexsawicki
@alexsawicki 4 ай бұрын
Here's a problem with that comparison: Each pellet of 00 from a 12ga has about the energy of 32ACP. So, comparing it to the fire rate of a rifle is... Yeah. There is an argument that it's basically the firepower of a machine pistol though.
@almaadams3631

These guys are mostly "urban commandos", however; A 3 foot long firearm that has significant recoil and relatively low capacity AND takes two hands to operate and can be short stroked( especially by inexperienced women and young men) The diminishing returns begin to stack up quickly. A pistol gripped semi auto 20guage( I imagine most of these new Turkish shotguns are pretty reliable) might help a little, but not much.
@ManInTheWoods76
@ManInTheWoods76 4 ай бұрын
@@almaadams3631 You make some good retort points. For the sake of examination, let me process the points (everything is a pro-con.) #1 It's a 3 foot long weapon... This is true of most any competent battle rifle or carbine (somewhat moot.) #2 It has significant recoil... Yes. Considering it's pushing a +/- 1oz load. But arguably it is manageable, particularly for the competent and trained. #4 Requires 2 hands... True, but the same can be said about most battle platforms. #5 Lower capacity... Yes. Sort of. That's a known quantity of 56 projectiles as stated. But to your point, a better argument is RELOAD speed which is slower, certainly. But again with training, running a shotty is shoot 3, load 2, shoot 1, load 2.... Stay full! #6 Short stroking by small or inexperienced people ... True. It comes down to training and yes it isn't right for every sized shooter. You brought up excellent points! Like every HACK though, there will be mitigation issues as you mentioned. In the end, it's training! Disclaimer: Though I'm an instructor, I'm not a shotty guy. I'm the carbine guy. This is just a hack. Your mileage will vary.

@@ManInTheWoods76 I also prefer an AR or a VZ58. I am 56yrs and never was much of a "shotty guy" either. Being that I am the "gun guy" however in my circle of family,friends,and coworkers; I will usually recommend some sort of pistol caliber carbine ( what are we going to call the the pistol caliber carbine pistol?) for newbies or women/girls. Preferably with a pistol grip and some sort of light and a shake awake dot optic( fiber optic front sight will glow with the light as well.) That way, they can maneuver and open doors, hold the kids hand,etc while holding onto the pistol grip and tucking the stock/ brace under their arm. Most of them enjoy shooting my 40sw 8" Banshee gen.1 but I suggest some thing cheaper ( blow back 9mm.) for economy and availability. I bought my Banshee pre pandemic on layaway; appearantly though, layaway has become a thing of the past for the most part.

Its not meant for what you’re trying to use it for.

Keep in mind a factory 18C is a select fire gun. You only need to use full auto when you need to use full auto. A factory 18C with the porting and lighter slide is actually quite useful and controllable if you practice and know what you are doing including keeping burst short. Shooting full auto is almost it's own separate skill. People who haven't actually really practiced with it just don't know.

One thing you didn't consider is in a self defense situation where did those rounds you missed go. Was an innocent person hit? Did those rounds go through a wall and hit someone else? So for those questions I would prefer a semi auto I know I can control where the rounds go.

It’s probably down to personal preference too. But from what I see theirs a ton more practice to be done, from getting used to the recoil and then making sure you can use it successfully, not to mention all the ammo a person will go through. Sounds expensive too depending on what ammo is used.

I think it might be practical if implemented in a select fire configuration. I want full auto if the fight is close range, where hit probability is higher, and the need to stop the threat fast is also most likely higher. If the threat is farther away, semi-auto is probably the go to mode of fire. Ultimately, if options are possible, the only question is, what will having more options cost me?
