In my college degree tier list video and other videos like the most worthless degrees or the top 5 college degrees that are actually worth it, I've mentioned that there are some majors where you don't actually have to go to university and get the college degree in order to land a job in that field. Depending on what job you're going for, general studies might land under that category because of how... well... general it is.

I graduated with an Associate in General Studies. I do agree that GS isn’t a career degree but is worth getting into if your transferring to university. I don’t regret spending loans on it, I took so many transfer credits that help transfer to university. I also gotten my BSW and MSW afterwards so I’m very proud of myself. Sometimes it takes a while to know what field your interest in.

I left college after my freshman year, but have recently found out that thanks to some transferable high school credit, I have 75% of a gen studies degree, despite being a college drop out. It’s not what I want to major in, but I’ve also really been *genuinely* interested in pursuing psychology. I know both of those degrees don’t really get me much. I’m wondering if I might as well finish the general studies degree so at least I have a degree… but if it won’t help me to get a better job than my current restaurant position… is it worth finishing as long as I’m going back to school anyway?? At this point all of my peers are graduating and I just want to be able to say that I’m working towards something again. I’m also considering a possible double major in economics or management, just something that I can have if I can’t keep going with psychology. It’s so frustrating how you do more research and then somehow end up feeling more lost. Yes I have talked to my advisor. Right now I’m doing part time classes just to prove to myself I can go back to school.

Also it’s like having a major in Psychology, History, Art History, Sociology, and Management Studies all rolled up in one to justify that you are educated😉😀👍🏾 You fill good about yourself😀 I make $100,000 per year as an Associate VP.

I got my Associate's degree and left school at 20. I got a job in computer programming and ended up working in CNC machining. I did that for about 10 years and went back to get my Bachelors in Gen Studies while I was working because my Alma Mater offered that online. Anywhere I go to work isn't going to care about that degree. It's going to be based on work experience. I'd never suggest starting school aiming for Gen Studies, but it will literally never hurt you.

I am someone with an AA in General Studies in Land Resources. I originally started with the intentions of getting my BS in Natural Resource Management, but life had different plans for me. I couldn't afford to get my BS just yet, and my only option was to go to school for 5 to 6 years for a 4 year degree, or just get my associates. So, I got my associates. I am now working as a Consulting Utility Forester for a power company. It pays decent and I have a fair mix of field (outside work) and office work, and I am content with it. Some jobs may require a specific degree, but not all of them do. I wish I would have known that before going into college. Most jobs appreciate someone with a degree, and some experience. I guess what I am trying to say is, don't be too hard on yourself if you have a degree in general studies. You can go any direction you want eith it, it can only help you in the long run.

I know a girl who knew she wanted to be a lawyer since she was a little girl. I guess because you need a degree as a gateway before you can apply to law school, she got a degree in General Studies from Fordham. Then off to NYU for their patent law program. If people say you should have majored in engineering to go into patent law, easy, marry an engineer like she did.

I actually think so if you're going for free or at a low cost. It's a good addition to a resume that applies to most jobs. Also, it buys time if you have parents that want you to go to college right after high school like me. You can in that time learn what you want to do.

You can take an associate in general studies and transfer to a four year college, taking chemistry, biology, and a Latin concentration, for example. I know someone who was accepted into med. school and changed to graduate school in the humanities for a pHd and got a college teaching job. In fact, the savings of the associate degree was wonderful. All those credits transferred to the 4 year college. You have to think and plan, but the BGS actually provides lots of room to create multiple avenues. In this case, clinical lab science, MD, Latin teacher/classics teacher. It's a highly respectable degree . . . if you do careful thought/planning.

7:40 First: DO NOT GO INTO DEBT FOR A COLLEGE EDUCATION!!! “The barrower is Slave to the lender.” Second: Open source course and self taught skills although beneficial do not show as good as a BGS in your resume. Third: if a person wants to specialize but already have so many college credits and no degree getting a BGS and then an specialty at the master’s level may make more sense. My two cents for those who are mid-career/have associate’s degrees. I DO NOT recommend it for an 18 year old.

By itself? gen studies is terrible. However, if you already have specialized skills, it could be a useful supplement. I work as a systems admin with a few industry standard certs. Gaining my associates in Gen studies has actually helped me get promoted faster and a decent pay bump. I think of it as a sort of "check in the box" degree that can open a lot of doors, depending on the field.

I'm sure it's better than a general associates, but.. *clears throat.* No. Take up a trade school or something. I don't even care what major you aim for. Hi Elena! I don't think that he can properly respond your question because this channel is more focused on the United States. However, I know that the situation in Spain is not as good for science and engineering majors as it's here in the States. I hope this may help. I'm sorry if I am not useful for you, but the situations in our countries are quite different, and even if I speak Spanish, it doesn't really help you because you are a polyglot, but at least your knowledge in languages should help you most careers.

@flwrpwr5351
@flwrpwr5351 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but you think you can get into any entry level job? Jobs are specific they want you to do specific task(s) and when looking at your degree they say "hmm is what this person studied applicable to the tasks I want them to perform?" Or they just want to know if you are someone who they can teach easily by looking at your degree but that is for obviously lower paying jobs. But if you manage to get a job at say a power plant you can only go so high up before your barred from promotions because you don't have specified skills. This is the same for most other jobs. But then getting to education specifically highschool generally you'd be barred from STEM teaching because in those courses good schools usually want experience or a specific degree. Even for say a history teacher though you're at a disadvantage to a person who actually has a history degree same goes for like every other subject 🙂 as well though but you're not barred ofc. To summarize forgetting OP if you're a highschooler or even in college and trying to decide, don't pick this for whatever you want to do companies/schools etc. are looking at what you can do for them the less specific with that you are the less theyll know if you're good for the specific job you want.

And just remember it's not all about being rich but having extra money will help you send your kids to college and give them a good life aswell as take care of your parents and give back to your country/community. I have a general studies degree. Gen Ed degrees are worthless on their own. If you can't get into something specialized, you'll end up in shitty minimum wage part time jobs with no career potential.

Are “general studies” and “interdisciplinary studies” the same thing? I earned both of those degrees at the undergraduate level, and I will be entering a PhD program in biomedical engineering this fall. I feel my brain is already in many different subjects lol!

Yup, they're the same thing. Gotta ask though, how did you get into an BME Ph.D program with general degrees?

@@DC-ee9de By taking a vast majority of courses in STEM and getting significant research experiences from genomics to automotive safety. My undergrad experience was academically rough because I changed my major 4 times. Also I don’t know the exact career I should go to, but I have some ideas. That is why general studies is a better route to take, especially when I ran out of time to fulfill all the requirements for any traditional major. Hope this helps! 😃

Hey I'm planning to become an Electrical Engineer. Im currently in my community college doing and assosiates degree General Studies, (which count as basics) Once I'm done ill go to an university and start my career as an engineer. (Bacehlors) Did I make the best choice?

I did it because it was cheaper than attending 4 years straight in an university, thats why im doing basics in my community college (which comes with an assosiates in general studies)

My career field does not have a preference on a degree or GPA. You do not even need a degree; it just makes you more competitive when getting looked at for promotion.

I’m getting a gen studies degree because I’m going to a private college and during my senior year the Comp. sci classes were at a graduate level for an undergraduate degree. I can’t pass them and the deans won’t write them off. It’d take too much time to switch to another degree horizontally so I’m taking the loss and just getting a LAS GS degree. I’ll do the leg work to make it into the right field and later on it won’t matter what degree i have.
