@Julian Crooks Not exactly factual. I see far more 70's Honda's than I do HD. But even if it were, the difference is, people ride their metric bikes. They don't spend all day cleaning them, wrenching on them and then going to sit in a parking lot at the donut shop talking about them. I'm not a cruiser guy, but if I were to consider one, it would be the Triumph or the Ducati. HD cost too much for too little and then you pay the HD tax on everything HD related. This is why they're dying a slow death.

I get that motorcycles are not rational purchases, so buy whatever floats your boat. I got an SV and love the thing, and I imagine most riders would. Feels planted yet nimble (~140 pounds less than the harley; the weight of a person), great engine (90 degree V-twin inherently vibrates MUCH less than a 60 degree twin), super reliable, good brakes (at least since the 2019 factory upgrade). The V engine configuration makes it slender and contributes to the nimble and responsive feeling. I am 6'2" and find it comfortable. 60 mpg local roads, 50 ish when going at super legal speeds on the hwy. Added MRA windscreen that works great and makes longer rides more comfortable. Enjoy whatever you are riding.

It makes less torque and power for the same displacement as the Japanese and European bikes, it is less fuel efficient and it even has a great deal of vibrations. What is it to praise about? It's because of the character, not because they perform better. It has to do with the sound and feel. Sure my 883 isn't going to beat most Japanese bikes, but it also was never intended to beat them in performance. The motor is pretty stout and reliable. The fuel economy really isn't bad. Obviously I own one of the rarest motorcycles on the planet, as my 2014 Iron 883 is bone stock (with the exception of a lockable fuel cap I put on haha). Never had an issue, no loose bolts or anything like that, no oil leaking, nothing. All materials on the bike including the chrome mufflers and the paint look like day 1. Fit & finish is untouchable. I get all the "issues" that are mentioned in this video, allthough - for me personal - it's like criticising a V4 S Streetfighter for not being vintage. For me they are pointless. All components of the stock bike harmonize perfectly together in my perception. The ride feels so pure, so raw but still smooth. That being said, yes, you can make this and that out of the bike, or make the bike "better". I'll keep it stock and hop on my ECU flashed MT-09 SP instead, when I want the performance and the hooliganism. Cheers m8 :)

But to the topic of the vid: Both bikes are great beginner motorcycles. As long as you're not totally into that oldschool type of raw and pure riding the SV650 surely is the better choice. @@michaelfinck6945 Honestly, the only place I've ever seen a stock sportster is at a dealership. I have a 2016 iron that I've been slow changing esthetically. I love the bike and really haven't had anything to complain about. I don't think the vibrations are as bad as they say, but then again I might be less sensitive to it. As for the SV, some people might not like how it looks. I myself can't view a bike on just performance. I myself do like how the SV looks, I'm just not a fan of the sport bike riding position. I've tossed around the idea of getting a naked sport, but haven't been able to justify it because I know it won't get ridden as much as my sportster

@@beardedforlife3740 Honestly, here in Germany, the only stock sportster I've ever seen outside a dealership is the one I own, so I guess I kind of personalized it :D As we know perception is highly subjective, the first dark custom design (my 2014 is the last gen with it) makes the iron one of prettiest motorcycles I've ever seen, it really drives me crazy haha! It's spot on just everywhere, especially the black / chrome balance, like an esthetic blueprint, it strikes me everytime and doesn't want to get old, can't help it haha. And it rides exactly as it looks, I mean literally. I percept the ride as kind of bare bone but still smooth. I always enjoy the flawless fueling and throttle controll. And I enjoy the vibrations. I mean. Just look at the bike.

@H H I'm from Brazil. We totally would buy a liter bike for day-to-day use if it was doable. I would love to make my grocery runs on an MT10. However, we earn our salaries in Brazilian currency (obviously) and the exchange rate is like almost 6 to 1 to the US Dollar. And the bikes cost here in US$ about the same as they go for in the US. But we make 5.5 times less in US$ because of the exchange rate. So imagine a scenario where any bike you fancy buying costs 5 and half times more. Yep. Now it starts to make sense why you see so many 125 cc bikes and scooters out on the road. Oh, and the same goes for the cost of replacement parts and consumables (including gas): they cost 5.5 times more what you're used to paying for them in the USA. Suddenly the cost of maintaining that liter bike becomes hard to justify. The US market is simply very different to most other markets. Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.

So, a "positive point" for the Harley is that it has a huge aftermarket, and can offer parts to make it better than factory? That's not a positive. It has that aftermarket, because Harley can't build a decent motorcycle anymore...and you need those parts to make a decent bike. So, why would I pay more money for the Harley, so that I can upgrade it to a better bike for even more money, when there are so many decent bikes out there at stock?

@@williamwatkins2538 How? I didn't say you shouldn't buy aftermarket parts. You obviously didn't understand. The Harley costs more. Why would you pay MORE for a bike you have to fix to get the value for your money...and then can you? Can you get the value for your money when you're spending more already? The after market is there for nearly every bike made. So, it's not a "positive" for Harley. Harley basically requires the after market, and charges you more to get started. I'm not seeing any positives here over other bikes. There is a reason why Harley is bleeding money.

Kinda depends on what you mean by dirt bike experience. If you’ve been riding for years and can throw around a 450 on the trails like it’s your figure skating partner then don’t even worry about looking for a “good beginner bike.”

I just bought a new 2019 SV650x and the only experience I had prior was riding dirt bikes as a kid. My biggest fear was I would outgrow the bike within a few months. Now its only been a month, but I've put 630 miles on it and have finally had the chance to truly ride it since getting past break-in. Harder leaning, wide-open-throttle, etc. There's plenty of more the bike can handle that I haven't thrown at it yet. Pair that with a huge selection of aftermarket options and lots of information online about the platform, and you have a pretty darn good beginner bike. I don't think you will be disappointed.
@middleweightmoto637

You'd be a lot better off than people with no moto experience who jump straight onto a 600 cc super sport, that's for damn sure. I think you'd be ok with a 650 although something like a duke/rc390 or a ninja 400 might be better for building up your confidence. Just know that riding street is very different from riding pavement. At 40 mph, I turn a lot differently on dirt than I do on the road. If you know that you're going to want to be a fastboi though, just go with a 650 and stay out of higher rpm for a little while and take it easy on the corners. Worry about riding better before riding faster. Some good news though, people who start in dirt GENERALLY tend to learn faster and be better street riders.
@mouthkick
@mouthkick 3 жыл бұрын
The fact that you have experience with motorcycle inputs (clutch control, foot and hand coordination, etc.) you're ahead of most beginners and will do fine on a 650 as long as you don't ride beyond your limits. Just be sure to scan your peripherals when you ride, anything can happen on the street.

That drag race was interesting, because i own a yamaha bolt which is a japanese knock off of the iron 883 and my buddy owns a 2019 sv650. We drag raced quite a few times and my bolt would destroy the little sv650 everytime even if he is the more experienced rider. Now i know how much of a step down in power an 883 is compared to my bolt. Its hard to know how much hp the bolt makes, the numbers are all over the place on the internet, from 46hp to 65hp and 52ft-lb to 76ft-lb. i think the 65hp is more beleivable if it can beat an sv650.
