I just wanted to thank you for this video. I started watching you a couple of years ago with hot rodding a snowblower. Mine turned out so good that I can't wait for it to snow. However on this video I couldn't believe how easy it was to poke a hole in the side of that tire. I always thought that tires were much harder and thicker than that. Thanks for the tutorial. I never had much interest in mechanical things until I retired, Now I have enough tools in the garage to keep the space shuttle serviced. Thanks to you!

Excellent video! Shows the detail. Hit a pot hole w/ so much force I thought my front strut broke in half! Checked for damage, all seemed fine. Then next day noticed a large bulge on the sidewall of the tire. Time to get it fixed.

Quick answer, yes you can drive on a tire like that. You probably won't be driving very long or comfortably on that tire, but you can drive on a tire like that.

mine was at least that high, tires due for replacement anyway, held my breath all the way to the tire shop.

I averaged 110mph on the Alcan Highway between the Alaska border and Haines with my 911 Porche back when the Alcan was dirt. I toasted a steel belt radial at about 1/2 way. Another tire died as I pulled up to the ferry terminal at Haines. They wouldn't let the car onto the ferry with a flat so I hitchhiked into town with a flat and the only tire I could find had an Easter egg on the sidewall. It got me onto the ferry. The ferry got into Seattle at 11pm and I drove all night to Sacramento California on the Easter egg tire and was sitting outside the Sears tire center when it opened.

Just a few days ago I had something similar, but more dangerous ! Had been noticing that my truck had a vibration for a while so took it to the tire shop to put two tires on the front. When the guy removed the left front he dropped it to the floor and the tread split about twelve inches ! If I had tried to drive the ten miles back home that tire would have come all to pieces and no telling what could have happened ! And yes, I had looked that tire all over very carefully and not seen any damage and it still had 70 percent tread left on it ! Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

I bought 4 used tires and only one of them had a bubble like that on the inside wall. I didn’t notice it until I was under the car looking for my 10mm socket. Looked up a few videos and decided to buy a new one instead. Thanks for the video

Can you drive this? Sure you can drive it right up until it blows out. and then you could still drive it so the tire completely shreds. and then you could still drive around on the rim.

I had that happen before from hitting a curb.

I ran a 35-12.5 flat on the highway, after fixing the broken valve stem, it inflated to have them bubbles allover the place. But she went another 200 miles and got me home.

Once I went over a big stone at 70mph. And got similar balloon. It didn't get any bigger but, still changed the tyre.

We had 76' Monte Carlo, with a bad vibration in the front end. I couldn't find anything wrong with it, I knew it couldn't be the tires as they were 'Good Rich' 100,000 mile tires and I only had 40,000 miles on em. As i was laying under it, replacing the tie rod ends for the second time , I looked up and both front tires had a goose egg on the inside.

I was pumping gas when I noticed one tire nearly flat. After inspecting it closely, I noticed the bubble. I put air in and drove home. Don't know how it got the bubble. Either I drove with a nearly flat tire for a few days or there was some sort of impact, puncturing the tire and causing a slow leak and ultimately the bubble.

Looks like the Gerber EAB Moe! I love mine. A while back they had a recall on them due to less than intelligent individuals cutting them selves, so they made a "Safety" EAB. You could send in your old one and they would ship out the new and "improved for idiots" model. I did this just to experience the customer service and they even sent me a shipping label (by request of course) to send mine back. Separated sidewalls....Yep...been there many times. Very interesting - well, I guess that answers my question of trying to repair a tire with 3M PR100. Might work, but is it worth it? Always wondering about the repair? Blowout at the worst time in winter, night, miles from nowhere - that kind of stuff. Nahh, buy a new tire for peace of mind.

I've had this happen to me but it was on the inside of the wheel well. Driver side and on the side closest to the engine. I noticed a constant imbalance, a wobble. I had a feeling of what was going on, but I was on a bridge when it blew. No more wobble, and a whole lot of shit scared out of me. Sounded like a gun shot and since I was on a bridge between the bridge walls, it was a sound that bounced back and forth, so it was louder. Good thing I got the damn thing home, I was only a mile from my destination. I went from 60 to about 80 until my turn off. Once I turned onto the next highway which was another half a mile, the tire lost pressure fast because there was no tire expansion and when weight of the car pushed it all out. Needless to say, 15-20 mph the rest of the half mile home. I drove it in a way that the tire stretched under the rim so the rim wouldn't make contact with the road, I was hanging out the road and constantly watched it. The rim didn't even have a scuff 😅

Agree with 90% of your outline, however the term radial relates to the way the nylon threads are arranged, rather than the steel belt under the tread. I'm a generation older than you, and recall the transition from cross ply tyres to radial tyres and then to steel belted radials. Nowadays car tyres are all steel belted radials and the 'steel belted' is generally left out of the description. However there was a 10yr or so period where non belted radials were common. Grew up on country roads in Australia, and it wasn't unknown to crack a tyre going out in the morning, change it and travel 60 miles to have it replaced, return home and crack a pair on the way home. Recall that my father established a record with the only tyre shop in the area, purchased one tyre and had it replaced 8 times under warranty during the 12 months of the warranty period. Dealer and manufacturer did stand by their warranty though.

Ok so I just bought a used tire earlier today and this evening I noticed that my low tire pressure light came on (same wheel that I got the tire replaced) and I noticed the same bulge in the tire that is shown in your video, but it’s a little smaller. The thing is, I won’t have any extra money to get a new tire replaced until another day and a half and I’m in a tight situation to where I need to make deliveries in my car until the time being. Do you think my car will survive for another 36 hours with this bulge while I’m out on the road? I’m honestly scared of it exploding while I’m out on the freeway or something and I won’t be able to afford anything extra until payday. I’m just concerned because I can’t afford having my tire self destruct on me before payday.

Is there a way a tire shop can make a bubble manually to scam someone 🤔 asking since I bought new used tires and only wanted a install and they told me layer after waiting for a while that they discovered the bubble after it was mounted...

I drove truck 38 years and had a few of these type of defects surface over the decades-NOW THIS IS FUNNY-Let me explain. This is old school back in the days of tubes. I noticed a good size bulge on the drivers side outside tire on axle 5 at a rest area as I was checking the rig over before I got back on the road. Ok-this is not good? I need to get this sucker to the nearest truck stop and get my spare on. So away I go at highway speed keeping a eye 👁 on it in the mirror cause it’s right there on my side of the truck-no sweat. Ok this is going to work out, only about 5 miles to the truck stop---WTF? Just like that the side wall split open about 2 to 3 inches and the tube emerged in the almost exact size of a basketball 🏀? What the hell? Back off the speed dummy! There’s big black basketball going round and round on the outside of that tire and it can blow anytime? This takes place in the slow/truck lane of 3 lanes on our side of the highway. Then I realize WoW- nobody is passing? I had it backed down to about 40 mph to limp it to the truck stop. 3 lanes of traffic behind me afraid to pass and rightfully so. It holds together as I’m turning into the truck stop I see people pointing and laughing as I approach the tire shop. This happened early in my career and as a bunch of us stood around this thing-at a very respectful distance-the old tire guy and the veteran drivers were all commenting that this was the first time they had ever seen this happen with a failed sidewall? We all agreed and I’m sure most of you will also that even with more modern tubeless truck tires whether there new or recaps that they EXPLODE and spread rubber chunks all over the highway when they fail. I certainly had my share of those also.

Why not get an inner tube and put that in the tire? The bulge would not be there anymore, because all the air would be in the tube. Yes, the rubber would still be separated at that point, but the tire would still be serviceable, at the very least as a spare.

Interesting. I'd took my car to get my front passenger side tire fixed. Pepboys. The giy calls mr to the car repair area, stating that the driver took the wrong tire off. But noticed on the wrong tire a cut and bubble. There was no bubble there before I'd brought it in However. When he'd inflated the tire. The bubble appeared out of no where. He didn't show me the bubble before he'd put in air inside. But he'd made sure to put air inside where the bubble appearef out of the blue while I was watching. Is it possible for shady.mechanics to create these conditions?
