I have an even better question: With ALL THOSE MILITARY AUGMENTS, how is it that Jensen hasn't been shut down? Tesla fists, typhoon, nanoblades, 360 degree frag dispersal, icarus-style lethal headbutts, able to cook grenades for even greater accuracy, structural damage, snapping guards necks, remote hacking network in his hand, a PEPS energy styled machine gun in his arm, fucking INSANE dermal plating, an TITAN augment which basically makes you a walking tank that doesn't flinch in an explosion and renders all rounds (Even armor peircing and EMP ammo) useless, and invisibility. If jensen committed enough crimes, he would probably be locked in an EMP chair for life, and yes, EMP chairs do actually disable like, 99.99 percent of jensens augmentations, even if he had an anti EMP augment in place it seems belltower overridden it somehow.

He's a cyborg. Granted the games probably don't say this (I say the word "probably" because I haven't played the games) but he's half man half machine. He's a cyborg.

Replying to this 2 years later. He is a cyborg but i dont think they ever say that term. Tjey always refer to them as augs (ofs), short for augmented. Its kind of a slur, espetially in the sequal.

I guess it should be judged by Jensen's action, not by what he is made of. The same rule applies to any other augs or even people without augementations.

If you specifically phrase it as man or machine (like in the title), then that's a false dichotomy. Man is a kind of machine, just a squishy one made of organic chemicals. As DARPA is so fond of saying: Biology *is* technology. Don't believe me? What are living things made out of? Atoms and molecules. Matter. What is our technology made of? Also matter. There's nothing magic about biology. It's all starstuff. I think we're asking the wrong question here. I don't actually think humanity is what we value, or even what we should value. Think about it - how do we respond to non-human animals that can feel and think. Only the sickest people go around torturing cats and when we spend enough time with Cetaceans, a mini-society forms with robust multi-directional communication. This is despite the fact that they're not human at all, and we're not cetaceans. You'll hurt someone much more deeply if you kill the family pet than if you kill a very human criminal. So what are we really valuing here that seems so elusive? I think it's personality/personhood. This one is kind of tricky, since most definitions seem to include some element of social participation as an essential element, but for others it just means an entity needs to be able to feel and think. Think about it - "humanity" by the strictest definition is surely altered when you replace traditionally biological parts with mechanical ones. It *definitely* altered when you change someone's genetics. So yeah, altering ability through transformation necessarily alters humanity (in this sense) But we've got people today with extreme ability and people with extreme disability. We don't consider children who are still developing inhuman and we definitely consider even the most freakishly tall, strong (bio-natural) person to be 'human', despite the exact constitution of their humanity being different in each case. But despite the differences, we still treat them with some kind of equality - which I'd call personhood/personality. Now on to whether or not augmentation is inherently toxic to personhood. We only need one case of someone using technological augmentation (protip: it doesn't have to be body-integrated to count) for benevolent means and to benevolent ends to disprove this. Well, I'm a programmer. I've got technological powers that the vast majority of people don't have. What do I use this ability for? Mostly building tools and games, many of which I've given away for free. Hardly sounds malevolent. But that's a toy example - let's look at people with medical superpowers. The kind of surgeons who provide limb transplants or remove tumors are without a doubt heroes. So what about the bad uses of technology? We know that it can't be something inherent to the tech. As many are fond of saying, "if guns kill people, spoons make you fat". And now we're getting to the crux of the issue - people afraid of transhumanism are mis-attributing the use of technology to people's moral failings. Ironically enough, they cite "human nature" as the reason why augmentation is bad. Then you ask them how they plan on fixing the failings of human nature and they throw up their hands, or alternately propose some kind of paradoxical social solution (after all you can't fix a broken system using that same broken system). The irony here being that if the flaw with humanity is human nature - the only viable option is to *change human nature*, and the way to do this is with science and technology.

How much did washing machines change human nature? Did the fact that we dont need to head to the river and handwash every shirt and sock change us? It made it "convenient" so we can use the time necessary to hand wash laundry to do something else. In the book "childhood's end" by isaac c clarke, humanity has overcome every possible need, and lives in one big city. People were immortal, and they could die only if they chose to, they were sculptors and musicians, and hobby scientists, they were happy living in that one dome-covered city, isolated. I have asked myself, while reading, is this what humanity would be doing if we didnt have to file taxes anymore, everyone could have any food or any clothes or furniture they wanted? What if i didnt have any basic needs? Would we be less human if we didnt need to excrete and eat and copulate? Like you said, human nature can change only through technology, if we make our lives as convenient as possible, will the present human resemble the 100% convenient human? What if we teleported nutrients into our stomachs, without needing to use our mouths? And what if we communicated through implants? What need would we have for the tongue and the teeth? Convenience will fundamentally change us, it is one of the primary drives for innovation. I dont think adam is less human or more machine after his operation, neither the people with prosthetics, or colostomy bags, in fact, they might be "more human" from the perspective that they have more inconvenient aspects in their lives, more things to take into account when making a decision, more steps to take daily. I would like to grow my own food and hand wash my things and control these aspects of my life, but that would make me unable to compete as a market entity in the world today, just like adam couldnt compete with the tyrants, or others in his market (private security).

I hate how people say we shouldn't invent new tech because 'It can be used for evil', even cavemen had power struggles using sharp rocks so what difference is a sword, gun, or augmentation. It's human evolution and those who want us to stop advancing really just want us to revert to cavemen, although they don't want to because they don't deserve it.

This was actually pretty cool and well made . more please ! In my opinion Adam should be considered the next step in human evolution . much the same way our bigger brains and better adapted bodies separated us from Homo erectus , Adam's augmentations give him abilities that far surpass anything us lesser evolved humans could ever hope to achieve

Thanks for watching the video and we are happy to know how much you enjoyed it. The image of human has evolved throughout the years (from the way we act, look, dress, and talk). It is safe to assume that people like Adam could become a new norm. Humans with augmentations could become universally accepted as a default human being.

You skim the surface of Cyberpunk without getting into the meat of it... The idea has a central character who (due to his duality of nature) is able to move between class divides, is able to make the powerful powerless, is able to make the weak gain a voice. He is, by definition, the ubermensch. He is a police or detective who no longer is police. It's not a religious theme, there's more iconography for Icarus than Jesus in this game. And he even is confronted at times about his god-like status (machine god). No, this is a Nietzschean concept that is integral to Cyberpunk and what keeps it decidedly separate from Science Fiction which has it's origin in Jules Verne. Read "The Thin Man" to get a sense of where the Cyberpunk comes from, then read Necronomicon. Or watch Bladerunner. You will see similar themes of character type, movement through classes, corruption, and an uncertainty of who the character is.

"One of best games of 21st century" dude, if we were talking about the original Deus Ex, I might've accept that, but Human Revolution? This game imitates most stuff from original, down to the story structure and treats people with augs like they're allgory for black people, even though they're just advanced prosthetics.
