In this video, Jon tests out the AK Interactive acrylic "Swamp Green" water Gel (available at amzn.to/3CCR4dr) by looking at a range of tests to see if a one part acrylic gel can get super quick and easy realistic water effects for your tabletop mini bases or diorama's.

A few years ago, I built some 'swamp' wargame terrain. It looked pretty good, but I was at a bit of a loss as to how to create pools of water. I didn't want to use resin, as, being lets say, 'frugal', (or a cheapskate), I would have had to buy a load of the stuff just to make what amounted to a few puddles. I'd read an article in a modelling magazine that suggested using gloss polyurethane varnish, so I tried that, pouring it to a depth of around 1-2mm. This looked great!... for while, but then it cracked and went yellow/brown, resembling nothing so much as a fungoid toenail. I couldn't get the stuff out, so I abandoned the whole thing to the Cupboard of Doom and forgot about it. Then... I came across this review, remembered my swamp project, and bought a tub of this stuff. Two coats of this, and presto!, I had the great looking swamp I had originally envisaged (rather than a podiatry teaching aid). My wife makes teddy bears, and sometimes uses really tiny (1mm) glass beads for stuffing the really small ones, and I found that a few of these dropped into the goo ( so that the bead is at least 50% submerged), create a nice effect of bubbles of swamp gas. You can get them from teddy bear making supply companies, I had a look this morning and they are about four quid a bag. I also found that a judicious sprinkling of scenic flock ( I used 'Grass Ground Cover' by 'Footpath') here and there, makes quite convincing duckweed. All the best, and thanks again for the review, please keep them coming!

The "podiatry teaching aid" part really made me chuckle :D I am very glad the video helped and you got a great result on your swamp project though. Also, I love the idea of the glass bead bubbles and the scenic flock for duckweed. I have a swamp project in the pipeline and I will certainly give that a go. Thanks for the tip!

I love! AK Interactive. I have their clear water I use it now and then can just add paints to it or inks to colour it depending on the effect you want :-) AK have some of the best products around I love their paints they are my go to atm along side some scale 75 paints.
@FlyingRavenStudios
@FlyingRavenStudios 2 жыл бұрын
Yes their "technical" or effect paints are amazing. I have the clear water in mind for a future project, as you say, you can tint the colour which kinda gives you unlimited options. Looking forward to playing with that!

Nice tutorial / review. did you try to use some kind of protective coat of camera to see if there will be some kind of reaction on varnish ? And did you try to use different kinds of glue if you want add static grass or tuft with pva glue or some resin plants with superglue ?
@FlyingRavenStudios
@FlyingRavenStudios Жыл бұрын
Hi deende79, not for this one..... however.... I do have a few "swampy" projects coming up that will be more complex. So, more testing first would be a smart move. Thanks for the ideas!

Just bought some for a dio of a Dino swamp. Dumb question does it dry clear and what Whould you use for a base coat foe swampy water effects. Great video.
@FlyingRavenStudios
@FlyingRavenStudios 9 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes, it looks very weird in the tub, but it does dry more clear as I found in the video. Depending on if you have a slope into the water or a river bank, then I would continue the colour from the bank into the water. Maybe do a small test piece to make sure you are happy with the effect? Enjoy, and let me know how you get on!

Enjoyed this video alot mate, i do have a question; im currently making a Kashyyk themed board for SW:L and im trying to decide if im better going with this product, or painting then using the transparent gel water effects? what do you reckons
@FlyingRavenStudios

Glad you liked it! That sounds like a really fun project. Are you looking at large areas of water or smaller areas? How deep are you going? As for whether to use either this stuff or the Clear water...... As luck would have it, I am currently editing a video testing the "AK interactive still water". I am hoping to have it ready by the weekend. So I hope that will help!

@@FlyingRavenStudios Hi mate, thanks for the reply and yes so far it's been a blast. the area of water is roughly 30x20cm so not huge, but not small either. i want to avoid expoxy resin is possible due not being too confident with it. Regarding the depth, i plain to put it straight ontop of a foam board, thats been painted, so no real depth. i'll keep an eye out for that video!

That is one of the things I am trying to do on the channel. Test things out to cut through the PR to see how various things really handle and if it will do the job for your project. To be fair though, it is pretty spot on for the Vietnam river patrol boat diorama. However, I see what you mean for the other photo on the tub. I am working on a project to test that out more, so we shall see on that one.

I'm not at all impressed! Too shiny, looks like spilled paint, perhaps done on a diarama it might look better but, I'm not gonna hold My breath!...Sorry!
@FlyingRavenStudios
@FlyingRavenStudios Жыл бұрын
No need to be sorry! Besides, thats the whole point of what Im trying to do, test things to see how they really work. To be fair to it though, It does have a semi transparent depth to it, which is difficult to show on camera. I do actually have a couple of projects coming up where I have this stuff in mind. So we shall see!
