Thank you for such well-researched information. I was thinking of using alpha arbutin but happened to catch a dermatologist on KZfaq say something about this ingredient and hydroquinone just in passing. I want to stay away from hydroquinone, so I looked into it and found your video. I now will not be using any product with alpha arbutin. I’ll stick with niacinamide, vitamin c, azelaic acid, and my retinoid. Thank you!

Yes, but the slight colour change seems to be not an issue; they tested it, and there was only one formulation stored over 40 degrees that had these issues(hydroquinone formed in a higher amount) still; the period was narrow, and since often the products are much older, I am very cautious here.

Well, the thing is that it does not have to happen, but people are unaware of it when using Alpha Arbutin and that there may be some additional instructions needed or even regulations to not "bleach" the skin. So if you got it from your doctor and use it as described, you should not encounter any issues.

Thank you! I got the 60ml from Adorebeauty and they refunded me. I was too nervous. It was strange because it was a dark yellow sort of orange colour when it’s normally clear…when I put it in the dropper, it looked clear. I still decided to return it. I live in Australia. I found superfade made my skin redness far worse which I think it’s the hydroquinone, because I don’t have issues with salicylic acid itself. Thank you for doing so much research and information into this.

Hello again; well, according to that paper, it is not necessarily an issue but may happen under certain conditions. So we do not know it yet, but if you are in Australia, and if it is hot in your place, it certainly could happen, and I think not really worth the risk.

well they do not mention "orange" in that paper, but a slight yellow hue is not an issue. (according to them) Still, I am questioning it a lot. We need further studies on it. @@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Just to be clear, I use a Salicylic Acid cleanser (3x/wk) and mask (1x/wl) to remove sebaceous filaments. I don't use it every day because I do have dry skin, but I don't necessarily have sensitive skin. The hyaluronic acid serum helps me stay extra hydrated. I utilize peptides for the anti-aging properties, but I avoid using matrixyl in the morning because of the acids. I use an AHA serum and moisturizer with niacinamide to treat hyperpigmentation. I double cleanse at night because I believe the sunscreen is more effectively removed. Since I've already removed the majority of the sunscreen and follow this routine up with tret, I use a super gentle cleanser. Because tretinoin tends to be too potent on my neck, I use retinol instead. I also mix another serum with the retinol to dilute it. I don't get irritated by the small amount of matrixyl in the nighttime eye cream that I use. I apply my tret once the moisturizer has had time to dry. That is basically my thought process.

While there's no strict guideline mandating the discontinuation of alpha arbutin after three months, it's always wise to monitor your skin's response. As for the return of hyperpigmentation, it largely depends on its cause. For instance, if sun damage caused it and you've managed to fade it, by consistently protecting your skin with sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure, it shouldn't reappear.

Where did you hear this? But Alpha Arbutin is not a good option; a retinol/retinoid or AHA or a Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid, ideally water-based) will work best. No, it can happen at any time. But I just noticed that people from Asia and Africa often had these issues, and when I asked them, they always lived in a very hot environment and primarily bought it from resellers. So I guess that these resellers stored it incorrectly or that it was stored wrongly in these hot shipping containers on the sea or land so that the reseller did not even know it. And that may influence the problem even more.

@@jaallb2864 Well, regularly exfoliating your skin can help remove dead skin cells and lighten it over time. You can use a gentle scrub or a chemical exfoliant such as alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). And to prevent further tanning, protecting your skin from the sun is essential. Wear a hat and sunglasses, seek shade when possible, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50+. And you need to be patient; this will take several months or even years. According to the paper, it may turn into hydroquinone, although only one formulation had it when stored at high temperatures. (which is/was likely not the case for your Alpha Arbutin) "At 40 degrees Celsius, the visual impact was dependent on the initial pH. alpha-arbutin recovery was minimum 97.1% for all samples. Hydroquinone content in all samples at t0 and after 3 months of storage at the different conditions was below 3 ppm, except for one sample at pH 3.5. This initially at pH 3.5, contained 22.7 ppm hydroquinone after 3 months of storage at 40 degrees Celsius. The alpha-arbutin recovery in the later sample was 100%." Also, the formulations that the Ordinary offer have a higher pH; therefore, it may not matter. And The Ordinary itself says the following: „We are aware of the potential colour changes of our Alpha Arbutin product. This is a natural occurrence, where certain ingredients in the product can change colour when exposed to sunlight or increased temperature. Testing has shown that the efficacy and safety profile of the active ingredient remains stable.“ Still not sure under what condition they tested it, and there is no research on this yet. But likely not an issue for The Ordinary formulation if stored at "normal" room temperature without direct sunlight/daylight.

Well, nobody really knows this, and it needs more tests and research to determine if it is safe to use and when the conversion into hydroquinone occurs. So, we'll see. However, the best option would likely be a retinoid, such as Adapalene 0.1% or Tretinoin 0.025%.

It would indeed be beneficial to have more studies on this topic, so I can't say definitively. There's no evidence to suggest whether using it for more than three months is positive or negative since it hasn't been tested in that duration. However, I wouldn't recommend using these treatments continuously for many months or even years. Typically, treatment periods last between 3-6 months for most of them. That's the duration I would personally adhere to before taking a break. While there are always concerns, if you've found the treatment effective in fading a spot or notice significant improvement, I'd suggest using it for that recommended period and then stopping. That's my usual approach.

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 11 ай бұрын
Okay :) So it's definitely the alpha arbutin causing it. Very interesting. Do these patches go away? What do they look like? Can you send me a picture? My email is melissavandijk@posteo.net. Initially, I thought the culprit might be the vitamin C. However, some people also experience this with Ascorbic Acid and Alpha Arbutin. I always assumed it was due to the vitamin C oxidizing. I'm not sure what's causing it, but it seems to be a common issue. Perhaps it's a reaction with other skincare products? 🤔 If you want to test this theory, you could try using only the alpha arbutin from your routine. Wait a couple of minutes and then apply your sunscreen to see if that resolves the problem. Alternatively, to avoid the issue entirely, it might be best to use it in the evening by itself after cleansing. This way, you can observe if there's any change. If you're very concerned, you might choose to stop using it altogether. However, it would be interesting to determine the root cause of the issue.
