Is Apple iPhone 14 Pro finally good enough for astrophotography? I think it is!

The main camera on the new iPhone 14 Pro with 65% bigger sensor and a 24mm lens is finally suitable for wide field milky way photography. There are still some caveats and limitations but it can be done and it's possible to get some quite decent results!

I think with the new 48mp sensor on the 14 pro they are still testing and optimising things before they give us the control we want on it. Same with the dynamic island, very clear that the 14 pro was rolled out without much dev done before release unfortunately and we are paying for that now

Thank you for this video. I just got the 14 pro max and want to start astrophotography. This was very helpful because I just discovered today there is no manual override on night time mode for longer exposure. The most they let you manually chose is 3 sec. It went up to 10 sec on auto. I will be trying the 30 sec with a tripod tonight.

You do not apply the crop factor to the aperture when comparing light gathering ability. It's to compare relative depth of field only. The lens is an f/1.78, but it would give you the depth of field of a 24mm f/6.3 lens on a full frame. The f number is an attribute of the lens itself and is a ratio between the focal length and the entrance pupil. The size of the sensor behind it is irrelevant. This applies when converting relative focal lengths between sensors of any size.

If you could you should test Huawei p30 pro. Its 3-4 years old but still it is better than 90% new phones in things like this. It has real pro mode and amazing RYYB sensor which collects ton of light. I used it for a year or so and was able to take some great pictures from tripod. With tracker that should be much better.

In the Even Longer app, you took jpeg-compressed pictures. In the pro version, you can take pictures in raw, the pictures are combined into one raw file, either in the light trail mode or in the star trail mode. I use it on my iPhone XR and got good shots of the night sky. I create a series of images and stack them in Sequator. Where can I share my pictures?)

I'm trying to figure out how 30 1-second exposures averaged out is different from one 30-second exposure. Isn't that just an average, too? And why can't those other apps "stack" the 30 1-second exposures like Pixinsight does? It seems to me that it should be possible to put a camera (iPhone or DSLR) on a tripod, take a bunch of pictures over the course of several minutes, and then stack the resulting frames such that the stars that have dipped below the horizon are ignored; the ones that were visible the whole time are "stacked" even as they move across the sky (thus reducing noise and sharpening the real stars); and then crop the top of the picture a bit so that the stars that weren't in the frame for the whole time are cropped out. Is that what some of these apps already do?

I thought by using third party Apps I could use ISO 100 with longer shutter speeds and get clean images in low light. What I learned using my Iphone 14 Pro Max is that once I chose a shutter speed slower than 1/60 of a sec the ISO would increase to higher ISO's. The phone raises the ISO to SIMULATE longer shutter speeds since it does not have an actual shutter. At first I could not understand what was going on because I was using ISO 100 on the third party app. When I checked the photos metadata the ISO was much much higher. So in conclusion I would say it's not possible to get acceptable results with a smart phone when doing astro photography unless you stack images like you did.

There's one thing that has always confused me about f numbers. Say that I have a small phone camera with f/2 and a diameter of the aperture of 10mm. So, that means that the focal length is 20mm. If I now take a 8" (200mm) telescope with a focal length of 800mm, that's f/4 focal ratio. Does this mean that it collects less light than the phone? Even if the aperture is much larger?
@alenk738
@alenk738 Жыл бұрын
Don’t be silly. Lenses with the same f-ratio will produce the same photon density on the sensor, meaning the same brightness. But that doesn’t mean they collect the same amount of light. Larger lenses always collect more light. It is simple physics. Anyone who believes otherwise should contact all the professional observatories and tell them they are wasting their time building telescopes with huge mirrors!
@Andratos95
@Andratos95 Жыл бұрын
@@alenk738 Okay then that explains it! Although it was my understanding that the reason why observatories build telescopes with huge mirrors isn't to collect more light, but to achieve higher resolution due to the better diffraction limit
@alenk738
@alenk738 Жыл бұрын
For both reasons. But the atmosphere puts a limit on resolution, even with adaptive optics. There is a reason the HST can resolve so much with such a comparatively tiny mirror.

Wait im confused. In Lightroom, were you able to adjust the edits that the iPhone already makes? Or were you able to apply a noise reduction reduction...? because I dont like the fact that iPhone applies noise reduction and theres no freaking way to turn it off. its the most annoying thing about iPhone and its the reason why I consider iPhone to be the worst camera ever put on a smartphone.
