I've been an A1up fan since the beginning and I wanna keep liking them, but I honestly haven't bought anything from the company in almost 2 1/2 years. Nothing but rehashes and crap people don't want like the casinocade. The real problem is that they are at the mercy of what the retailers will carry, if a game doesn't have mainstream appeal then the Walmarts/Best Buys/Targets aren't gonna sell it which sucks. Rumor is the company is in debt and it doesn't help that it's currently run by a bunch of 20 something year olds who have no nostalgia for classic arcade games.

Well said, I heard they were in financial trouble as well but I do not have the facts so i did not mention it. But you never know, they might turn it around or get some financial assistance or even get bought out. They may still live.

Spent the money on marketing, influencers, getting into retail store shelves... they really tried so you can't knock them for that. I don't know who their target market was but these things are for kids, not full grown adults. And kids wouldn't even care to play on these things. Online was a good experiment, but now you cannot compare to FightCade 2

Yeah Fightcade is where it's at. But yeah they tried and they might change it up and succeed, here is to hoping.

Yep, prices went up and demand went down. Quality went slightly up, but not enough to bring in the big fans. Won't be long now...

I think the biggest problem is that the nostalgia simply wore off. In total I’ve bought a few of these games and I’ve spent around $3,000. At first they were great but after a while it kinda wears off and now they are in the corner where I always had them, but they’re unplugged. And I’ll probably only use them for like house gatherings and such.

Yeah, nostalgia is a powerful drug. But its cool you have 6 machines. I would keep them. The beauty with nostalgia is that it always comes and goes and comes again. so i guarantee you will always want to play them from time to time.

any arcade 1up should be one player or alternate 2p. too small for a true 2p experience

@kmastamine I agree, cosmetically it looks good but the 2p just isn't practical.

1UP Arcade failed to grasp one thing. Consoles are not where you make money. Games are where you make money. Accessories are where you make money. It's a gimmick product that takes up entirely too much space for your average consumer to buy them, even one of them simply because they can do everything this thing does, but in a better form factor with a console or PC. I'm not calling people suckers because if you are getting enjoyment from it, that's the point, but these things were essentially more limited than those plug and play systems built around a controller for a substantial cost for what you are getting. What they should have done is sell a larger cabinet with a solid screen to it with two player space with a specific skin/header with 10 games on it and then sold games via DLC as well as a set of two additional player spots you can attach to the cabinet and a bunch of skins and headers to customize what you are getting. I'm not saying that I don't like the idea of an arcade cabinet because that's pretty neat, but I could never justify buying one when I can slap retroarch on about as many things as I could Doom and have a bunch of games on it on my big ass TV or my PC monitor or a calculator. The biggest thing I think that most people who are/were into these things and the company that makes them forgets is that arcades were a social experience. You go into an arcade by yourself, you may have fun playing the games you want to play without a line, but you aren't playing against someone else, you aren't getting rooted on from friends and random people who may be watching you. You aren't meeting new people who you had a few matches of Mortal Kombat with. Arcades were an amazing experience because everyone there was essentially there for fun and the vibe.
@RudetunasArcade
@RudetunasArcade Ай бұрын
Wow, that's deep and 100 percent true. Nostalgia sure can be powerful, but it was truly about the actual social experiences with arcade machines. Examples being actually having to put your quarters in a machine and actually making your game time last, the excitement of a new arcade game release and telling your friends about the game and where you saw it, and just the beauty of playing the actual superior arcade version of a game vs the atari home version we all owned. Nicely said.

If they did a Smash TV arcade with that game plus say Total Carnage, Robotron: 2084, Gun Fight/Boot Hill, Mars, Space Dungeon, Black Widow, Rescue, Geometry Wars, and maybe even the modern Xeno Crisis--that's a good selection of twin stick shooters there--I would possibly buy that. Assuming it wasn't overpriced. I wouldn't go above £300 to be honest. That's how much I got my Street Fighter II one, and it felt about right. And I personally want proper physical coin slots on the front this time too, even if they don't technically work.

Arcade1up cabinets are getting expensive from $400 to $700. Yet, they still used cheap labor parts such as the buttons and joysticks to manufactured it. And their emulations is not perfect. Their T2 was a rip-off. Who would buy a Arcade1up cab for $600 that contained only 1 game? It's ridiculous pricing.

The long short is arcade1up did deals with the wrong people NFL NBA, Microsoft, Disney, Marvel ect. Those companies state goals in sales/production and couldn't meet standards from Toy/entertainment through license agreements. Cause these are classified as toys not video games which is how they got some of these licenses but toys require massive sales/productions they didn't meet. Thus owed massive back in failure agreement taxes. Secondly they lost the staff and figure heads like John B shaking hands and building bridges for licenses so they had to cancel and shut down projects with just prototypes left over. It's like a lot of people say. If you lose the person or persons who champion or legit care about your brand and product than what point do you have to go on you are just treading and retreading waters to make up for personal and financial losses. Hence why we keep getting repop after repop of the same old cabs. They are trying to earn as much money to pay the loss taxes to the companies who they agreed with while they have no more liquidity left with only 4 months left to pay back. It's truly sad and upsetting when 1up could have been so much more and stuck to a great market with a decent price. They just chose the wrong and the bad long game.

Finally a sensible business post in here versus fanboyism or MAME talk. I know people use to complain about cost but let’s be real it’s a HUGE product even being a mini and there is only so much retail space available. It’s actually amazing they could make much profit selling a $300+/- game here or there from time to time. It’s like trying to build a financial empire off selling balsa wood bookshelves at Walmart since they take up about the same floor space and are the same hassle to stock & transport home. It’s just not an everyday item someone takes home in their cart on a whim.

@mikeg2491 exactly additionally packing a 599 to 1k deluxe or XL edition of a product with no added games modes features or extras is killing née customers or those that would normally sell rebuy rebuild or upgrade because it's the same product if not a down grade. They had their niche and their stride at 299 to 599 now they are just abusing and extorting their market and their license agreements and partners.

The issue I have with Arcade1up is the overall quality I get for the price, which is just not great, at least in Europe. For example, a NBA Jam Shaq Edition is around 800 EUR retail, the Street Fighter Deluxe Edition is around 700 EUR... It's simply not great bang for your buck, the screens are notoriously bad, the emulation is kinda bad, the sticks and buttons are not top notch, while I was initially super hyped to be able to finally get my hands on a cabinet for a reasonable price, sadly Arcade1Up leaves much to be desired for the money they ask.
