Hi meg i would like to recommend a stud that i've seen he's a 16hh thoroughbred name Siren's Missile, he seems like such an amzing horse to breed Bear with if you go onto End House Stud he should be on there it looks lik he has just about as much scope as Bear!

Looking forward to seeing future a Bear baby 😍 You’re not at all selfish for keeping her, or not pushing her ‘to her full potential’. One of my pet peeves is horses being sold from homes they are happy and healthy in just because they have potential that’s not being utilised. Like you said, they honestly wouldn’t even know or care that they aren’t FEI stars, as long as they are well cared for and loved. Bear has always seemed so happy and healthy with you guys and if you’ve got the ability to keep her, you shouldn’t feel the slightest bit guilty. Cant wait to follow her journey into motherhood, and wish you both (and Hobbit and the rest of the ponies) the best of luck 💜

At the end of the day, a horse doesn’t care about its ‘potential’ - they’re happy sitting in field all day! Bear would be a perfect broodmare, making little Dun ponies 😁

I agree wholeheartedly. Except to say Bear is buckskin 😅 Something that hasn’t mattered until now, but she’s being bred, so the difference between a dilute gene and true dun becomes interesting!!

@@spellywelly lots of research for us to do :-) The whole 'colour gene thing' seems very confusing, but at the end of the day we're looking to breed an eventer so you know what they say? 'A good horse is never a bad colour' :-) x

@@jelphick4686 absolutely, and well said. It also IS confusing! Mostly because the WPCS and Connemara Society still say ‘dun’ when those breeds don’t typically carry it...and also because a lot of us ‘old money’ Brits think ‘buckskin’ is an Americanism for dun, which isn’t the case. The fun thing about Bear is that she has a 50% chance of passing her cream gene on regardless of the stallion. It’ll be a fun guessing game, even with eventing prowess as the hope!

You’re right. In the USA, buckskin is only one of three basic variations of dun. The others are red sun and grulla. I know because my friend is an inspector for the American buckskin society.

@@fleetskipper1810 wow. I just googled ABS and had a whole new light shed on the confusion. I should thank you for that! You’re absolutely right about red dun and grulla, but buckskin genetically isn’t dun at all - it’s a bay horse carrying one copy of the cream gene, just as a pally is a chestnut + cream. Dun horses are characterised by primitive markings - leg barring, a face mask and a prominent dorsal stripe. It IS a dilution gene but completely unrelated to cream. I’m absolutely amazed to see the ABS is listing ‘buckskin’ instead of simply ‘bay dun’! I just figured the American societies had it figured out much better than us Brits! It seems we’re just as confused on both sides of the pond. 😂 Forgive the pedantry. I studied colour genetics at uni! 🙈😳 (and just happen to have a soft spot for buckskins and palominos!)

Meg, you are a true horsewoman. You put your horse before your own aspirations. That’s something that is extremely admirable and commendable. You know your horse and know she’s happy where she is! You are so in tune with your horses and what they need. I’m so happy for you and Bear and can’t wait to see what stallion you choose!

Honestly, I have so much respect for you for not forcing her to compete when you know it causes her so much stress, and as much as we all love watching her jump, in the end its the horse's wellbeing that comes first. Hopefully you don't get too many negative comments!

It always seems like the obvious choice to sell a pony with bags of talent and worth money so it can 'fulfill its potential' but to ask whether she would actually be happy is such a mature and selfless thing to do. Bear is a lucky pony to have you guys.

If you end up getting a stallion that’s a Welsh, I would go for Thorneyside, they have a very calm nature and their stallions are a nice size. 15.2-16.1 my horse is from Thorneyside Magic man. I’m sooo excited for you and Hobittt!!!! Literally love you guys so much ❤️🥰 xx

Meg I’m so pleased with the decision you’ve made! It is absolutely the best decision possible. Bear is SUCH a special pony, on so many levels-and she needs a special home to truly understand her. It’s also safe to say she is an enormous part of the heart and soul of your blog. I’m looking forward to this new chapter! I’m off stallion hunting!

It's never selfish to keep a horse you're not competing on! Horses don't exist for humans to compete on them and it's never wasted potential for a horse to stop being ridden/competed, theres plenty of talented horses out there for everyone. Best of luck to bear and I'm excited to see a baby bear soon-ish!

I've always felt like Bear performs well because of her anxiety and flight mode. As someone also forced to operate in this level, I think this is a much better future for her and once again I'm reminded how much you know, love and care for your horses.

Tamsin I feel you. Also, I had one particular Welsh D mare who was SO unreasonably petrified of poles she went quite the other way. She was very like Bear in that she had an incredible technique, but this one just Could Not Handle It. Most D’s were bred for in-hand showing for so long. I think that’s where the fight-or-flight spookiness in some comes from. SJ breeders say ‘some’ fear is a good thing, because fear = careful, but I’m so glad they made the decision not to let Bear live a constantly jumpy life! And in spite of the money she would’ve likely made. ❤️

Sooo exciting! I have just bought a little 4yo flat OTTB in Sept 2020 and cannot fault him. His attitude is phenominal! Not spooky in the slightest, so willing to work, beautiful movement with legs up to his little ears. Just did Prelim 1 with a score of 63% in December 2020. Only jumped a couple small crosses but it was like he knew exactly what to do and gave them lots of clearance and power over them. If you would like to look into his breeding, his name is Inverarity, Sire is Mazameer and Dam is Tripti. I don't know of any proven 'riding horse' success from this line but from what I have seen of my little guy I would highly recommend. Good luck!

William Micklem, who invented the multi bridle, has a brilliant page on Facebook about breeding it's fascinating and he's so knowledgeable about it and explains everything in so much detail and I'm sure he lists decent stallions, so maybe have a look on his page, it's just a suggestion, he's worked a lot with my cousin so I know he's always willing to help ppl and answer questions. Im so excited that you're keeping Bear, it's not selfish as you know her best and know what she can and can't cope with, but I can't wait to follow the journey to a Bear baby. Happy new year Meg 💜

I've only just found your channel but Bear is gorgeous! She looks like a pony called Roxy at my yard that I have a soft spot for. People can call you selfish for keeping her, but I personally feel it is more selfish to MAKE a horse compete that just doesn't enjoy competing no matter how talented they are. The most important thing is that she's loved and looked after and is happy just being allowed to be a horse 💜 you clearly have a very special bond with her :3

From Canada: Yes it's called a "dump" of snow. We wouldn't call Bear dun though. (and I think a TB stallion is a great choice).

I used to have a German Shepherd called Yogi. By default with a name like that he was the most laid back dog! I'm a believer in the power of a given name so sounds like a great name for a colt! 🙂

Seriously recommend penmawwaddy stud in wales, bianca has some gorgeous stallions from welsh D to warm blood, appys etc, all her boys have the best temperament and would be amazing to have a bear foal with xx

Warm Greetings from Wellington Florida! ( 79 degrees in January 😔) Whatever your decision is concerning Bear, or any of the other ponies, is the right decision! You and Hobbit know the ponies the best and make the best decisions for them (i.e Laura.) I’ve been watching your vlogs for just over a year, and it’s obvious how much you and Hobbit care for the ponies. IMO it would have more selfish to force Bear to perform, when she didn’t have the mind for it. So excited for the future vlogs!

She’s the product of a sec D sire and a sec C mare - and she herself looks so much more section C than D - her beautiful little refined head, for eg. But she clearly grew too tall to be a showing prospect as a C, where the height limit stops at 13.2hh. I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I imagine that’s why she got overlooked. It’s rather a good thing she did, now! This is a better life than in hand showing would’ve been!

I knew she wasn't for sale because, let's face it, you would have been crying for the whole vlog! Given the description of her early life, I feel like she's been exposed to some bad stuff and maybe even a lot of bad stuff because she's a challenging girl (SO happy she's with Hobbit and you now - because you are generous, good people and great horse people). I actually think that there's a good chance that she could mellow out in a few years and then perhaps might take to competing later, once she settles more. If they've had bad experiences, this can take a lot of time. I'm thrilled with your decision because I don't want her to be moved on again and I think you are going to end up with a fantastic sports horse at the end of this (win/win - yay!)! Plus she's essentially the Meryl Streep of equestrian vlogs (always the star, even with just a tiny part). Also, as a Canadian who as spent a couple of winters in the UK, I can attest to the fact that even though the temperatures aren't super low, because of the dampness, your winters are quite harsh sometimes. I need one of those hats!

Must confess had to go to the end to find out before watching it all, was so nervous. You are right horses don’t sit there worrying they have not reached their full potential and as she is so quirky if you sold her and it did not turn out right she will be sold on and on - even if you sell on condition of first refusal to buy her back this does not always happen. As Bear is so stressy Bear staying at home and playing around will be much nicer for her than going out and about and stressing all the time. As for her babies oh wow they will be incredible. Glad Bear has a home for life especially after moving around so much when she was young. X

I think you've made the right choice. Bear has already had an unsettled start in life, and the main thing is that she feels settled and happy now, and by default you will be happy too knowing you've done the right thing by her. I'm sure Bear's spookiness is more from her life experiences than her DNA so I'm sure her foal will be wonderful! 🙂❤️

So pleased for you that you’re going to breed bear-bear!! She is such a sweetheart and she will have so much to contribute to her foal! Breed for temperament over talent/movement (which is our focus as breeders too) so look forward to those future vlogs !! 💕💕🦄❤️

I have been hoping for this for so long and was 99.9% sure you would. 🥳 You are completely right about everything you said about Bear and horses in general - I have 4 well bred pedigree mares and many people would say they are wasted but they don’t know that! They are very happy and so am I. 💗 Huge hugs!! So exciting!! 🤩🥳😍xxx
