While people eagerly await the construction of Nayib Bukele's planned Bitcoin City, one Salvadoran couple has taken upon themselves to beat the government to punch. We took a trip to Berlin to find out what's happening, and we were blown away by the city's embrace of Bitcoin as a medium of exchange and store of value.

Unlike Bitcoin, the new digitized dollar, if it becomes real, will be centralized and controlled. Think about that fellow Americans!

There's huge potential for a domino effect out there in Usulután Department. The various townships out there compete with eachother to be the "best" destination. With Berlín suddenly gaining all this attention, other townships will feel motivated to hop aboard the Bitcoin train. We have word that it's already starting in Alegría, Berlín's top rival. Exciting stuff, as this will confer economic sovereignty and empowerment upon the residents.

I have been to El Salvador five times and have never used Bitcoin. Since I read nothing but bitcoin praise here, I will presume you don't allow other views on your video but will give it a try. I was once invited to a bitcoin event/party in Florida at the Zamora hotel by a friend who uses bitcoin. I had to burst out laughing when the parking attendant refused to accept bitcoin. This same friend had to go on medication after he lost his money as bitcoin lost value.

Hi Chris, thanks for your comment! If you're retired on a pension, the visa you'd be applying for is the F7 Residencia Temporal Pensionados. The minimum monthly income amount for this visa is US $1095.00. If your income is to be derived from a rental property (common for retirees), the visa is the F8 Residencia Temporal Rentista. The minimim income amount for this visa is US $1460. For all visas, you need the following: - Valid passport with at least six months remaining before expiry - A fingerprint-based criminal background check from the RCMP, apostilled (authenticated) by a government official. The apostille can be obtained from the Canadian embassy in San Salvador. There may be other requirements depending on the type of visa you apply for. We strongly recommend using an immigration lawyer or service to handle your application, as mistakes can become costly very quickly. All in all, it's an easy process if you have the right guidance. Happy to help! You will pay a tax on certain types of income, and a VAT on goods and services purchased at incorporated businesses. Access to public healthcare is available to foreigners, but we generally recommend the private system so as not to burden the system Salvadorans have been paying for their whole lives. The private system is not exorbitantly priced like the USA.

I was thinking of coming but a quick look on Airbnb and booking tells me there is no adequate accommodation at the right price, especially for a 1-3 month stays. Facebook is just full of incomplete ads with pictures of a back patio without furniture at best. Where can one stay in Berlin then? How do you look for an apartment or a house to rent for a couple of months?

how to pay with bitcoin as a tourist? You cant use the Chivo wallet, only El Salvadorians can use it. If I pay with Bitcoin I have a 16 Dollar Network fee for a 4 Dollar coffee.

Great question! You'd use a Lightning wallet. Lightning is a layer 2 solution built on top of Bitcoin. Transactions are instantaneous and virtually free ($0.00 - $0.03). Chivo's internal ledger is interoperable with Lightning, and so there is no technological barrier. After Chivo, the most common Lightning-enabled wallet in El Salvador is Blink Wallet. Blink is custodial, and so Blink-to-Blink transactions are always free. Non-custodial wallets like Phoenix or Muun are also commonly used, and fees range from $0.01-$0.03. We run our entire financial lives on Lightning. Even our credit card works with Lightning (see our video with DitoBanx). We perform one on-chain transaction per month, and that is to pay rent. Lightning can be used for that too, but the total immutability of layer 1 is preferred due to the size and legal significance of the transaction. Hope that helps!

To transfer 25 Dollars in Bitcoin to the lightning Wallet, the Network fee is around 10 Dollars and the Deposit fee is 0.06 cents. Till I can pay with Bitcoin and have acceptable fees, I lost a lot of money on fees.

La billetera que están usando en Berlín es Blink Wallet. Algunas personas también usan Chivo, pero la mayoría usa Blink. Estás viendo otros videos sobre personas que tienen problemas con Bitcoin porque muchos comerciantes aún no entienden la diferencia entre la red de Chivo y la red Lightning de Bitcoin.
