I never thought Better Call Saul would get that praise, hype or dare I say, the meme status it’s gained this past year. I only saw the first season, and I never got around to watching the second season when it premiered. It’s mostly because I forgot all about it, it also didn’t help with the two or three year breaks it kept getting but it’s good that the entire Breaking Bad saga is flawless in every way.

It only started taking an extra year hiatus with seasons 5 & 6, but I hear you. I think BCS was always destined to get more respect AFTER the finale aired. It’s not as bombastic as BB was, so there weren’t half as many “holy shit” moments in this one that would encourage viewers to rush back week after week to see what happens next. It’s a very laconic experience, but it’s never lethargic. There’s always something exciting happening, but it’s never excessive. I recently binged watched all 6 seasons over the last two months and I firmly believe that the show was made to be viewed in quick succession like this, where you can see how intricately patterned the story is from front to back with less risk of missing/forgetting details. Just like Mad Men before it, BCS feels more like reading a novel than watching a tv show.

As meticulous and detailed the writing was in Breaking Bad, it’s incredible how many different routes it could’ve went. Like the most well known fact is how Jesse was supposed to be killed off in S1. BB and BCS couldve each went very different ways but we got them in their most perfect ways.

I actually think Moonlight is a much better example of what Grant is getting at because it was peak Oscar bait. What he really means is that US TV is put together in an almost clinical and cynical way that ensures it is objectively good and has mass worldwide appeal. The problem is that Breaking Bad is probably not a great example of this because the show really shouldn’t have worked, right down to its premise.

tl;dr at bottom i am inclined to agree with you. breaking bad is more focused on story beats and themes rather than characters and environment. better call saul is more character focused and building a captivating world. in other words, breaking bad is about what happens and better call saul is about who it happens to and how they feel about it. i felt so much more connection to the characters of better call saul because they all felt real and they all effected the world in their own way whereas in breaking bad everything is more or less just a result of walt's actions and the characters exist solely to tell his story. not that plot and theme focused stories are inherently worse than character or setting focused stories but i personally absolutely love complex characters and interesting environments. the characters in breaking bad were perfect in terms of the purpose they served but i don't think any character in breaking bad including walt is nearly as complex as the main characters in better call saul and i just personally love feeling attached to characters like they're real. characters in better call saul felt real to me and closer to me in a way they just didn't in breaking bad. that's just my opinion tho. tl;dr breaking bad is about plot, better call saul is about characters. i personally like complex characters more than complex plotlines but both are perfect for purpose they serve and how they were executed.

Theres an argument there that it could be breaking bad just doesn’t feel as personal to Gornt than anime, usually anime is based on a manga whose story is usually the vision of 1-2 creators where as better call Saul has a team of writers all bringing their own ideas and directors and actors. A live tv show can’t feel as personal because of how much people are involved

I get Garnt's take on Breaking Bad. When a show's approaching a point where there's no flaws that's holding it back and it's just almost universally agreed upon as good. You going into it as a critic can't even find much to flame it about. It's a lot more difficult for you to let it make a unique impression on you. One of my favourite games is Sonic Unleashed. But by many objective standards, it's a bad game (flaws and qualities listed at the bottom of the comment). Although, I still love the game because the good qualities it has are specifically aspects I love and look for in games, but also because all of the flaws don't really bother me in particular. When I sit down to play that game, I feel like I'm making a deal with it. Taking in the bad stuff so that I can enjoy the good parts. I feel more personally attached to it because many other people would just play many other games instead. Of course breaking bad shouldn't be more like Sonic Unleashed. But it's made me realize that flaws make it easier for some people to latch onto flawed works. And it's a bit deeper than "these people just don't like it because it's popular" Sonic Unleashed Flaws: A majority of the game is spent with a very non-sonic playstyle that's kinda shamelessly ripped off from other games. And in that other style, the soundtrack is constantly interrupted by the same battle theme for 90% of the levels. The controls and camerawork is shaky at times leading to unpredictable damage or deaths. The framerate at some points take a massive dump into powerpoint presentation territory. The tone of the story is super inconsistent with the tone of many cutscenes where one second the world's being shattered into pieces then the next you're chatting with locals about flowers and such. You have an obnoxious little imp flying and crying over your shoulder for most of the game. Qualities: The soundtrack fucking slaps. The daytime levels are very fun on repeat playthroughs. The level variety is amazing, taking good inspiration from real world locations. The texture and model quality is some of the best stuff in the entire sonic franchise, being comparable to frontiers (and it came out in 2008). Aside from the inconsistent tone, the story presentation is amazing when it comes to the final boss and everything leading up to that.

As a huge Breaking Bad fan, it's insane to go back to that show after finishing Better Call Saul. You catch glimpses of Saul's hijinks early on but it takes the entire series to see how he became the Saul we knew from Breaking Bad who did horrible things and protected horrible people. In Breaking Bad, Walt literally cooks meth and kills someone in episode one. With Better Call Saul's pacing and story telling, we would have watched Walt's home and work life for a season before he really even started considering cooking meth. To me, that's not a bad thing. The character development in Better Call Saul is insane and definitely surpasses Breaking Bad in that regard. Breaking Bad has been my absolute favorite show ever since I first watched it which is why Better Call Saul making me question my ranking is so surprising. The show is just so amazing. For me personally Breaking Bad has better story and pay off but it was a show very much carried by Bryan Cranston. He made the show go from good to great by his performance and corruption of a character. Everyone else is good but I don't think they kept up with him. While Better Call Saul story gets fuddle by the end and fizzles out. I think its the more entertaining show to watch and rewatch because they went out of way to add more depth. But more than that the show is carried by its 4 to 5 main characters that step up to plate to make them so enjoyable to watch their lives unfold. From Jimmy, Kim, Nacho, Mike, Gus just do wonderful job breathing life into them to be so much more and even the side characters were phenomenal. So while I think BB is better show I prefer BCS.

I can't think of a single bad charakter or episode. It may be slow, and yet it kept me coming back (unlike BB...). So, is Saul better than BB? Yes, yes it is. In every aspect.

Giancarlo Esposito was fantastic in BB as Gus, but yeah, he has an Italian dad and an African American mum. Even as a non-Spanish speaker, I can tell he's slowly phonetically pronouncing the Spanish, once you concentrate on it, it sounds bad. But I still thought he was great. I also probably prefer Better Call Saul, up until Lalo and the Germans turned up. I found Lalo a really annoying supervillan. Howard's death was a lazy end to a brilliant character that they should really have done more with. Season 5 was a bit of a bust, and the first half of season 6, but it finished strong. Would have liked more of the black and white flash forward Jimmy/Gene story overall, and more callbacks to Jimmy with Chuck. The relationship between Jimmy and Chuck was so rich and emotional, the bit where they sing The Winner Takes It All gives me goosebumps. Once Chuck was out of it, I think it lost a lot of what made it great.

BB has some fat with the Skyler sections that could be reduced for a more concise watching. Every episode is meaningfull, sure, but it has small filler sections in some of them. Similar to her case is Chuck Mcgill, but he has very interesting quirks with his condition, and is played by a really good actor. Compare the two and you can see how good the writing got. I wouldn't say it's too real and too sanitized, it has a very whacky humor and part of the charm is how absurd the situations can be at times; walter without his pants pulling out a gun or heck SPOILER's death itself (season 4 main death) is so exaggerated and unrealistic and still delivers.
