@@ThatGuyOnTheInternetAndMore Yes, they're an incredibly political punk band and always have been. Why wouldn't politics come up? It's what I've always loved about Green Day. Remember when they brought Pansy Division on tour with them because they despised the jock-filled, conservative void that their audiences had become as they grew more popular? It was brilliant to watch those intolerant conservative meatheads forced to deal with an incredibly-in-your-face gay punk band :D

Exactly right. The band Kansas isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, because they have religious tones to their later songs. Which shows it's only political. If you are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame today, it means you are a left wing sell out. You are not talented, you are a useful member of the cult. Congrats to Green Day, You are in a Marxist cult.

Billie Joe has a good voice for the music Green Day makes. His voice is distinctive and iconic in pop punk/ pop culture at this point. You hear his voice and you know it's Green Day or Billie Joe (depending on if he does something solo like he did during covid or features as he's done). There are way worse vocalists doing punk music and way better but he's used his voice and songwriting with Green Day to become a legend at this point in the industry.

American Idiot was done on Broadway. So it's very interesting to hear the difference between a classically trained, professional singer performing these songs vs the guy who came up in the east bay punk scene of Oakland CA in the 80s. As a longtime Green Day fan, it sounds like the edge has been sanded off the songs with the "better" vocalist from Broadway. That unique tone from Billie Joe adds character to the overall sound of the songs in a way I didn't notice until I heard the other versions.

BJA & Adrienne were married 14 days before me, and that month it was Dookie that sucked me in. I was 25. My son was born days before American Idiot was released. Twenty years later I was at a GD show last summer and during the long wait before they came out - a bit buzzed & high - I just started belting Basket Case and got what must have been 1000 people singing. It was like a wave. I see myself in each of them, amd their music keeps me younger and happier. "Still Breathing" came along 60 days after I was set to take my life and it snapped me out of it. I love them.

She said might lol. He will and probably has been doing things to help keep his voice in a healthier state but she is right that techniques hes using commonly cause issues for rock vocalists down the line. Hence you'll hear a lot of them having to get surgery to remove vocal nodes, having to take longer breaks inbetween tours or having to switch up their singing style and hiring a vocal instructor full time

Couple of things. It’s not tech issues they were playing live on BBC 3 and they muted the swear words. For this performance he was pretty drunk and later went into rehab. They played Dookie in its entirety at this gig for the 21st anniversary. Dookie and American Idiot are both celebrating their 30th and 20th anniversaries this year. They have just released their new album Saviors and they are still amazing. Can’t wait for the tour in June as they are playing both Dookie and American Idiot live in their entirety at every tour date.

He’s the only singer I can think of who sounds like a completely different person in the beginning of his career than he does now. He's a perfectly fine singer for the music they make. The crowd is mic'd too loud. I could tell they were English on sight before I recognized the accents. It always seemed to me like Billie was putting on a faux quasi-English accent when he sings. I never knew if that was intentional or just a natural result of the things you described about his vocal technique. There was a singer named Jim Ellison from another band called Material Issue. He did a similar thing. Maybe they were both subconsciously emulating Robert Smith or something.

3:17 Plus if you are constantly touring and singing; it's gotta be hard on your voice.

An English coworker of mine swore to God that Green Day was British. He was shocked to find out they're from Cali

I don't think Billie Joe Armstrong is a good singer by the standards of big time rock music. By comparison to singers like Robert Plant, Joni Mitchell, Nancy Wilson, Bruce Dickenson, Freddie Mercury, and a handful of others, he doesn't have their range, their technique, their versatility, or their expression. He's often pitchy in concert. He often strains for notes in ways that are not very healthy or technically sound. And he's not notable for his vocal range. I wouldn't say he's terrible, but not good by comparison to others within his general genre and tradition. YET, I do think he has a distinctive voice that's good for his band. He's a little like Bob Dylan in that way -- not a very good singer, but a distinctive voice. I think he's a good performer. And I think he's a smarter and more interesting songwriter than almost any pop-punk band from his era. That's good enough.
